Nationwide, a renewed emphasis on inspection and maintenance of our infrastructure has led to the more frequent need for personal protective equipment to ensure the safety of inspectors and workers. While inspection, maintenance, demolition and construction work share many safety issues and solutions, each activity has its own unique needs and requirements. This guide outlines many necessary safety and environmental needs and includes fall protection, respiratory, head, eye, and face protection, as well as gas detection for toxic and combustible gases. Fall Protection One of the biggest risks associated with bridge work, of course, is the risk of falling from heights. Whether working from an aerial lift, from scaffolding, or even from the bridge structure itself, the need for fall protection when working at elevation is paramount. Proper fall protection systems consist of several key elements: anchorages, body harnesses, and lanyards, all of which are produced in a variety of types. The following section outlines several common and popular types for bridge and infrastructure work. Anchorages bear the forces of a fall, which are often underestimated. A 220-lb man falling six feet generates over 1,300 foot-pounds of kinetic energy, making the case for ensuring strong anchor points. After all, the best fall protection system is only as strong as its weakest link. 8 According to recent FHWA findings, close to 26 percent (12.4 percent structurally deficient and 13.4 percent functionally obsolete) of bridges in the United States are currently classified as either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.
