Colour the bowling equipment; pins, shoes, ball and bag.
Bowling is an individual or team sport. Individuals play against others or as part of a team. Bowling takes place in a bowling alley, where special shoes, balls, lanes and computerized scoring is available. There are two types of games you can play, 5 pin or 10 pin. 10 pin bowling: 10 pin bowling is played with a large ball that weighs between 6 and 16 lbs. There are three holes in the ball, one for your index finger, middle finger and thumb. You hold the ball by putting these fingers in the hole. Hold the ball up, aim for the center pin, swing your arm back, then forward and release the ball down the lane. Do not throw the ball or you may injure yourself or others. Watch and see which pins you knock over and aim differently when you release your 2 nd ball. There are 10 pins to knock over in 10 pin bowling. In each frame players get two attempts to knock over all 10 pins. 1 point is scored for each pin that is knocked over.
5 pin bowling: 5 pin bowling is only played in Canada. It was invented because some thought 10 pin bowling was too strenuous. In 5 pin bowling the ball is lighter and fits in your hand. You roll the ball to hit the 5 pins at the end of the lane. In each frame players get three attempts to knock over all 5 pins. When all 5 pins are knocked over in the first attempt it is called a strike and is worth 15 points. This diagram shows the layout of the pins in 5 pin bowling and the point value for each. Scoring: The score is usually done by computer and displayed on a screen by or above your bowling lane. The numbers at the top represent the frames The 2 smaller boxes inside the box is where the score goes for each ball rolled. An x on the screen indicates a strike. A number and / indicates a spare. The numbers indicate how many pins you knocked over. Your total score will appear where the? is displayed below.
Bowling Terms: Strike: When you knock down all pins with your first ball. Spare: When you knock down all pins with your first and second ball combined. Turkey: When you get three strikes in a row. Gutter Ball: When your ball goes into the gutters on either side of the lane. Frame: 10 frames in each game. Within a frame every player gets a turn. Foul: A foul occurs when any part of the bowler crosses the foul line when releasing their ball. A foul results in a deduction of 15 points. Alley: A group of lanes; a bowling establishment; a playing surface, usually made of maple and pine boards. Arrows: Aiming points embedded in the lane. These seven arrows (usually red or black, but may be other colours) are used for targeting. (darts) Ball return: Track between the lanes the ball travels on when being returned to the bowler. Bowling shoes: Special shoes for bowlers that have a sticky, rubbery sole on the nonsliding foot to act as a brake and a slicker, harder sole on the other foot to allow sliding on the last step. Curve: Ball that breaks from right to left. Split: is when the ball knocks over the center pin/pins, leaving pins on either side of the lane.
Fun Facts about Bowling: 1. 5 pin bowling is only played in Canada. 2. According to the Guinness World Records, Japan is home of the largest bowling alley in the world with 141 lanes. 3. Indoor bowling lanes made their debut in 1840 in New York City 4. Bowling made its television debut in the 1950s. 5. Bowling balls were made out of wood until the early 1900s. 6. Each bowling lane is 60 feet long 7. Bowling promotes balance and coordination, and helps sustain hand-to-eye coordination. 8. In 10 pin bowling if you knock down all the pins with your first two balls in the tenth frame, you get to roll a third ball. Read Books about Bowling: 1. Mitchell Goes Bowling by Hallie Durand and Tony Fucile 2. Bowling Alley Bandit by Laurie Keller 3. Curious George Goes Bowling by H.A Rey 4. Bowling at Home by Dawn McMillan and Pat Reynolds
Activities: Make a bowling lane: set up a bowling lane by placing pillows, blocks, or rope on either side. Set up pins to knock over, you can use empty water bottles, toilet paper rolls, or empty juice containers. Practice rolling a ball down the lane and knock over the pins. Record how far the children could roll their ball and how many pins they could knock over. Wall Bowling: Tape empty paper towel rolls or wrapping paper rolls to the wall. Set up numbered targets on the floor below and have children put pom poms down the tubes. There score will be whatever number their pom pom lands on. Bingo Bowling: Bingo bowling is a team effort. It's a 5x5 bingo card with bowling scores written on (strike, spare, split, head pin only, gutter, 15, 10, 13, 12, 11, 10, 8, 7, 5, 3, 2, etc). Each person bowls their frame like normal but instead of trying to get the highest score, you try to get things that your team hasn't marked off on the bingo card yet. Print the Bingo card here: Funky Bowling: Funky bowl gives a different way to bowl each frame (right hand, left hand, both hands, backwards, one foot, sitting down, between other players legs etc).
