4 02 THE RANGE 2019 Gray-Nicolls was formed in the 1940s with the merging of H.J.Gray and Sons, a racket and bat maker who famously supplied King Edward VII and the independent cricket bat manufacturer L.J. Nicolls. THE BRAND STORY Later acquiring other famous brands including Wainwrights and Shaw & Shrewsbury, Gray-Nicolls became the much larger company which we know today. During the 1950s and 60s the brand went from strength to strength, and at one stage each of the captains from the five test playing countries; Ted Dexter, Richie Benaud, Frank Worrell, John Reid, Trevor Goddard were using a Gray-Nicolls bat. The 1970s saw Gray-Nicolls become the first bat manufacturer to introduce coloured labels as well as their iconic, trend-setting red flash. In 1974 the company broke new ground with the introduction of the revolutionary Scoop bat. With the company growing exponentially and attracting global appeal, Gray-Nicolls also opened a new factory in Melbourne. Capable of producing some of sport's leading innovations, Gray-Nicolls is responsible for the revolutionary "Steel Spring" and the first shoulderless "Superlite" bat. It has also produced well-known and much loved bats including the Dynadrive, Sabre and Millennium. Over the years many famous names including David Gower, Robin Smith, David Boon, Javed Miandad, Sunil Gavaskar and Jeff Dujon have chosen Gray-Nicolls. In 1994, Brian Lara used a Gray-Nicolls Scoop 2000 when he scored the highest ever first class score of 501 not out, and his then test record score of 375. As we entered the new millennium, more runs were scored by cricketers using a Gray-Nicolls bat than any other brand during the 2003 Cricket World Cup, including the Australian legends Matthew Hayden and Andrew Symonds. From 2006, the most iconic player on the international stage to use the brand has been former England captain Alastair Cook. Cook went from scoring a century on debut for England in Nagpur to becoming England s record Test run scorer, amassing over 12,000 in his career to date. Still owned and controlled by the Gray family, the cricket bat factory is still based in Robertsbridge today where all makers are trained to maintain Gray-Nicolls exacting standards.

6 04 THE RANGE 2019 Over the years, Gray-Nicolls has been fortunate to work with legends of the game. Three of those legends David Gower, Michael Atherton and Shivnarine Chanderpaul span three generations of cricket from the 70s, 90s and today. During that time, many things have changed in cricket. But one thing has stayed the same the craft that goes in to a Gray-Nicolls cricket bat. I think one of the more interesting things to start with is the first time that you go down to the factory recalls Gower. You see this cottage industry, which smells of all the right things and feels right. You see people putting all the right effort in to making the bat and you see the skilled craftsmanship. LEGEND Atherton is full of admiration for the bat makers. After having been down to Robertsbridge and seen the bat makers at work I always appreciate people who show real craftsmanship at what they do, whether it be as a player, a bat maker, musician, writer, whatever. And while the level of skill going in to bat making hasn t changed, some of the output has. Bats have changed in size and performance, something not lost on Chanderpaul. Well, seeing it back then and seeing it now said the West Indian, innovative would be the word I'd use. Gray-Nicolls has always been doing things to make the equipment better, which is where we are today. Innovation is great, but for Gower, it s all about the middle of the bat. If you happen to get a bat, if it happens to ping off the front of it, that s absolutely perfect said the former England captain. Whether or not you put grooves in - one groove, four grooves or just add a bit on. Whatever it is that makes it work. For Atherton, the Gray-Nicolls and player relationship comes down to one thing and one thing only. Good bats he explains. That s what you re there to do: score runs, so a good bat is the key to it all really. The key is in your hands.

11 THE RANGE After the tremendous success of the new Scoop XVII last year, Gray-Nicolls welcomes back another legendary bat to the range for By popular demand, the Powerspot returns. The bat, made famous by the likes of David Gower, Michael Atherton and a square-cutting Robin Smith, features the iconic blue Powerspot, designed to give the ultimate impact when the ball is struck in the middle of the bat. The former England captain, Michael Atherton, used a Powerspot for most of his Gray-Nicolls career. I can t really remember using anything other than a Powerspot said Atherton. Maybe right at the end of my career, but it was Powerspot from the word go and then pretty much throughout. And his inspiration for choosing to use the Powerspot? David Gower. I chose Gray-Nicolls because Gower used them. Although he played a bit before me, we overlapped a little and he used the Powerspot, so that s why I chose to use it too. Atherton played perhaps the most iconic England innings of the 1990s with the Powerspot. We will never forget his battle with legendary South African fast bowler Allan Donald at Johannesburg in Batting to save the Test match, with Donald bowling at full tilt, Atherton faced 492 balls over 643 minutes to earn his side a draw, making 185 not out in the process. POWERSPOT The bat promises a fantastic pick-up, with rounded edges and even weight distribution. 13 THE RANGE A classic never goes out of style. In many ways, Alastair Cook embodies classic Gray-Nicolls. Identified at a young age as a future England captain, Cook has been a lifelong ambassador with the brand. Now, as he moves into the latter part of his career, the Classic tag must be passed down the Gray-Nicolls family. So who's up next? Step forward Max Holden. The Middlesex youngster, who like Cook is a left handed batsman, has been earmarked for greatness from an early age. Already a Gray-Nicolls veteran after having signed at the age of 15, Holden captained England Under 19s, with Angus Fraser declaring him one of the most exciting young players in the country. Holden has long since tried to emulate Cook, going back to his bat of choice as a child. I think my first Gray-Nicolls was the Powerbow with the yellow stickers. Probably close to Alastair s debut when I was about 12. The parallels with Cook don t end with their brand of choice. As alluded to, Cook was also picked up early by Gray-Nicolls. I think Gray-Nicolls chose me said Cook. I was Under 14 South of England best batsman apparently, and I ordered two free bats and two free gloves - I thought all my Christmas' had come at once and yeah, that was it. I was sold forever really. They haven t managed to get rid of me so I m still hanging in there! So what do Cook and Holden see as crucial in their Gray-Nicolls relationship? As a batter it s the most important thing to be able to trust your equipment, especially your bat said the former England captain. It s got to feel like part of you and actually you can t be worried about what you re holding. You ve got to be going and concentrating on the ball coming down, actually having that bit of trust that you know you ve got a decent bit of wood in your hand. CLASSIC FAMILY For Max, it s all about communication. The communication has been really good. They understand what I like in a bat, what I like in my equipment and they re always there for chats about what equipment I need. Another classic awaits.

16 14 THE RANGE 2019 POWERBOW6X FAMILY Some people are born to use Gray-Nicolls. Often identified by the brand at a young age as someone with the potential to achieve big things in the game, they are signed, nurtured and encouraged to flourish. Others come to us later. Sam Hain falls in to the later bracket. The Warwickshire batsman who was born in Australia but became English qualified, signed with Gray-Nicolls before the 2018 season on the back of some promising performances early in his career. His immediate impact with Gray-Nicolls was fantastic, scoring a century in his first innings with the company during the North vs South series which took place in Dubai. Hain seems to have settled in fine. It s just nice to be a part of the family that is Gray-Nicolls said Hain. I think my first bat was a Gray-Nicolls Hayden 380, with a titanium handle. I still remember it. It's so weird in some ways that I would end up back at Gray-Nicolls, but I m absolutely stoked to be a part of a big family in not just England, but around the world. Former ambassadors like Matthew Hayden would prove to be fine inspirations for Hain, who in 2019 will use the Powerbow6X. I m currently using the blue Powerbow6 and it s not too dissimilar to the 6X. I m pretty traditional when it comes to bats, I don t like a lot going on, but there s still enough there. Obviously with this current day and age, you just want stand out a little bit. I think they look very, very good and I look forward to using them. The 6X continues the long tradition of the Powerbow range, which launched the international career of Alastair Cook back in It s a bat that classical stroke makers will enjoy, but with graphics to bring it into It is that tradition that Hain most associates with the brand. Gray-Nicolls is one of the companies that has withstood everything that s been happening, right back to the 1850s. I guess they ve gone through all the changes we ve seen in bats and they re still by far one of the leading companies in cricket equipment. Here s to many more Powerbows to come.

20 18 THE RANGE 2019 SHOCKWAVE FAMILY Some players are destined for big things. Identified early and mentioned frequently, they are quickly picked and sponsored as soon as possible. Think Cook and Atherton players that were long known to be destined to play for their county and for England. Add to that list the name Joe Clarke. The Worcestershire batsman has long been seen as a future England player from his early years in school cricket, to this point where he is on the verge of his first ever international call-up. Averaging over 40 in more than 50 first class matches, the statistics serve to exemplify the natural ability of this Shrewsbury-born star. In his first full season Clarke has scored five County Championship centuries, but scoring centuries has always come naturally to him. In fact, he scored his first when he was just 12. I was 12, the first time. recalls Clarke. When you re batting it seems like you re batting for ages. There s no scoreboard either, so you don t know where you are, and then suddenly you just hit a four and everyone goes up. It s quite a feeling actually. Every time you get a hundred is a special feeling, but the first one s almost relief in a way. Joe became an ambassador early on in his playing days, and hopes that despite his young age - he can inspire the next generation to use Gray-Nicolls. It really makes it special to know you re a Gray-Nicolls ambassador and the Gray-Nicolls kit helps me to perform. I hope to become someone young kids look up to and inspire them to use the same equipment. It is a privilege to be a part of a really good company. In 2019, Clarke will use the new Shockwave. It just stood out to me straight away. I like the blue colour of the bat, and the design across the back. There s a cool little pattern and I like the vibrant colour of it, I m really looking forward to giving it a go. Joe Clarke is making waves.

24 22 THE RANGE 2019 SUPERNOVA FAMILY With cricket at a crossroads, the pull between two generations is apparent. Test cricket battles T20 and power hitters fight for headlines and column inches with the grafters of the game. But there is a middle ground of player that is as suited to cricket played over three hours as they are to that of cricket played over five days. Ben Foakes is the perfect example of one of these players, technically correct, easy on the eye, capable of digging in, but ready to flex his power when required. During 2017 he was a one-day behemoth, averaging 96 in the One Day Cup, while also forcing his way into England s test touring party for the Ashes series. Now he is aiming to take his game to the next level at both domestic and international levels. Assisting him in 2019 will be the new Supernova InfraRed. Designed specifically with players like Foakes in mind, the new InfraRed will give the craftsmen of the game the power they need to dissect the field or hit over the top, time and time again. So what does Surrey star think of his new range? I think it looks lovely. The last few bats I ve had from Gray-Nicolls have been a similar sort of profile, and this time the design is a little bit different. It s a nice change up. It s bold but it s also quite simple, which I think is quite a nice thing. I m not a massive fan of having too many stickers on a bat, but for me it s a perfect amount. To return, the Supernova needed to evolve with the game. As cricket continues to develop, batsmen have to adapt and the Infrared will now serve as the perfect partner for those that refuse to compromise on precision or power. Let s get started.

31 THE RANGE Speaking about the clothing ranges currently offered by Gray-Nicolls, Worcestershire stars Ed Barnard and Joe Clarke were full of praise for their new stash. 2 They ve been brilliant said Clarke. Even the training kit has been brilliant. The new track pants, new hoodies and gilets have been great, it makes a difference from the year before to have Gray-Nicolls Kit. It s been brightening up the changing room really, having some decent kit. So yeah, everyone s really happy. 35 THE RANGE In 2018, the Cage was used widely across the County Championship, with the likes of Varun Chopra, Ed Barnard and James Foster ever present in the shoe, while at Test level they are worn by England s record run-scorer Alastair Cook and Pakistan star Shadab Khan. In 2019, we are going bigger and better. As the cricket brand with shoes being used at all levels of the game, the Gray-Nicolls R&D team take footwear as seriously as their bat range constantly looking to improve and introduce new technologies into the game, working closely with our elite level players to provide the best performing cricket shoe range possible. All shoe are designed to look and feel like a performance running shoe, with the additional benefits of cricket specific features to provide players of all levels the responsiveness they require for all formats of the game. 2 The Cage will continue to feature all the technology that has made it our most successful shoe to date. However, the Cage 2.0 features the new IMPULSE+ midsole, providing crucially, more energy transfer. Lighter materials have also been sourced, increasing the freedom of movement as you chase the ball down or run between the wickets. The Cage 2.0 continues in iconic red, black and white. 36 34 THE RANGE 2019 The relationship between a wicket keeper and their gloves is a complex thing. Ben Brown of Sussex and John Simpson of Middlesex are two of the games most proficient exponents. Both born in 1988, they are acutely aware of how different a wicket keeper s needs are compared to other players. In such a specialist position, the tools of their trade are essential to get right. WICKET-KEEPING We re probably more fussy about our gloves than we are our bats said Brown. It s very individual, I think you put on a pair of gloves and know whether they re right or wrong for you and your hands. I think it s important, you need to feel confident that those sort of half chances will go in. Simpson who played Lancashire league cricket at just 10 years old is infamously picky with his kit. I think I m a little bit over the top with it. I can be very particular with what I like he explained. You ve got to be confident when that chance comes. Whatever it may be, if it s a half chance or a stumping opportunity that it goes in the middle and that hopefully, it goes in more often than not. Why trust Gray-Nicolls to look after their careers? For Sussex-born Ben Brown, the chance to represent the brand from his home county was too good to turn down. I think for me personally, we re in Sussex as well, it s great to use a Sussex brand said Brown. To have it so consistent over the years and have no desire or need to look elsewhere is great. There s lots of start-up companies and I think to be part of a brand with so much history and so many incredible players that have used the brand is really special. I think that the biggest thing for me is that as a young kid it s the only brand that I ve used continued Simpson.
