1 Cricket scorecards Cricket scorecards are usually of interest to collectors for one of three reasons an unusual or record-breaking event occurred in the match, a person of particular interest played in the game or the match was important in its own right (Ashes, Cup Final, Centenary match etc). The most popular examples of the first category include Headingley 1981, Laker s Match and Hutton s 364, but today we can also offer items as diverse as Lara's 501, Gubby Allen out handled the ball and the Australians being bowled out for 18. Perhaps the most unusual character to appear in one of our scorecards was Montague Druitt, who played for Winchester College against Eton in 1875 and later became the chief suspect in the Jack the Ripper case. This fascinating scorecard now hangs in the new pavilion at Eton College. Equally interesting is the scorecard offered below featuring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle s highest first-class innings, stumped off W.G. Grace for 43. WARWICKSHIRE V DURHAM 1994 (LARA 501) CRICKET SCORECARD Edgbaston, June 2-6, Drawn. Lara scored the world record first-class score, 501 not out, for Warwickshire. Just over a month earlier, he had amassed the Test match record with 375 for West Indies against England in Antigua x 21cm. Half printed. Lara's 501 recorded in ink. Lancashire's total was also the highest county championship total of the 20th century. Completed neatly in pencil with some records also listed. Scarborough, September 1, This seems to have been a 9a-side left-handed match between "England", including WG Grace, Lord Harris and Lord Hawke, and "Middlesex". Good GENTLEMEN OF ENGLAND V AUSTRALIANS 1905 CRICKET SCORECARD Crystal Palace, May 4-6, Drawn. The Australians opted for batting practice in the opening match of their tour, rather than pressing home their advantage. Noble (60 and 162) and Hill (87 and 93) piled up the runs; Brearley laboured long in taking 9 for 228 in the match. It was WG Grace's penultimate game against the Australians x 18cm. The MCC top four were WG Grace, AE Stoddart, KS Ranjitsinhji and FS Jackson. Overall size 38 x 29cm. Fully printed on silk. Mounted, framed and glazed. A few light stains to silk, but otherwise in very good condition
13 M.C.C. V AUSTRALIANS 1878 CRICKET SILK SCORECARD - ENGLAND BOWLED OUT FOR 33 & 19 Lord's, May 28, In one of the most remarkable matches ever played the Australians scored only 41 yet won the match by 9 wickets. England, led by WG Grace, were bowled out twice in an afternoon, scoring just 33 and 19. Spofforth, their champion bowler, returned match figures of 11 for 20 and Boyle 8 for 17. This was the second game on the first ever Australian tour of England, and helped establish their formidable reputation. As a result, the tour was both a financial and sporting success, ensuring that many more tours would follow. This was the property of Alick Bannerman, the famous "stone-waller", and has his name printed to the reverse. 19 x 13cm. Post-match commemorative card, printed in blue lettering on silk, sl. foxing and very sl. fraying to edges. Interestingly, the bowling analyses for the second innings have been incorrectly recorded, with one of Spofforth's wickets being credited to Boyle. Very good. Extremely rare LORD PORCHESTER'S XII V R.E. MARSHALL'S HAMPSHIRE XII CRICKET SCORECARD Official scorecard for the match played at Highclere Castle on August 27th (year not stated). The home team inlcuded Compton, Dexter, Keith Miller, Titmus, Evans, Eagar, Tyson, George Mann and Lord Porchester himself. The Hampshire team included Marshall, Ingleby-M, Sainsbury, Shackleton and Horton. Hampshire scores recorded neatly in ink - it seems that the home team won with Miller scoring a century (but not confirmed). Very good condition. 1960s
14 LONDON COUNTY CC V MCC & GROUND 1902 (SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE'S HIGHEST FIRST-CLASS SCORE) Fully printed cricket scorecard for the game played at Crystal Palace on 14,15 &16 July London County won by an innings and 43 runs despite Rawlin (122*) carrrying his bat in the second innings. Wood, Poidevin and WG Grace scored centuries for County. But the real interest is the appearance of one Sir A. Conan Doyle in the MCC team. He made 43 & 0 and bowled was his highest first-class score. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ( ) was a hard hitting, though not especially skilled, batsman and a bowler of slow, loopy lobs which often took a puzzling flight. Indeed he once quipped that so slow was his bowling that if he ever delivered one he didn't fancy could run down the wicket, intercept it, and come back for another go! In 1899, for MCC, he took seven for 61 against Cambridgeshire at Lord's and on the same ground two years later carried out his bat for 32 against Leicestershire. It is said that Shacklock, the Nottinghamshire player, inspired him with the Christian name of his famous character, Sherlock Holmes, and that of the latter's brother Mycroft was suggested by the Derbyshire cricketer of that name. Overall size 30 x 25cm. Mounted, framed and glazed. Very good condition INDIA XI V SILVER JUBILEE OVERSEAS XI (COMMONWEALTH TEAM) 1954 CRICKET SCORECARD Official scorecard for the match between an Indian XI and the Silver Jubilee Overseas Cricket XI (Commonwealth Team), played at the Stadium Grounds, Madras, on January 13-17, This was the fourth Unofficial Test on the tour. 15 HAMPSHIRE V LANCASHIRE 1947 (TIED MATCH) CRICKET SCORECARD Bournemouth, Aug 27-29, Tied (the fourth in the history of the County Championship). Washbrook's 105 nearly won the match for Lancashire but Bailey's 6 for 82 ensured Hampshire captain Eagar's gambling declaration just broke even. Last man Barlow was run out off the fourth ball of the last over. Earlier, Lancashire captain Cranston had scored 155 not out. 19 x 13cm. Fully printed, with extra details added. Sl markings. Accompanied by newspaper report. Very good X08011 GLAMORGAN V SOUTH OF ENGLAND XI 1948 (TO CELEBRATE FIRST COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP) Souvenir scorecard for the match played at St. Helen's, Swansea, on Sept , This was part of a Commemoration Cricket Week to mark Glamorgan's historic first County Championship. Signed by JC Clay of Glamorgan and by the full South of England XI - Robins, WJ Edrich, Bedford, Stephenson, Wood, Horsfall, Laker, Langridge, Gimblett, Cook and Yarnold. Glamorgan won a very close encounter by 2 wickets. 25 x 15cm. Ownership signature of the well-known sports journalist JBG Thomas to top right corner.very good condition ASHTEAD CC V MICHAEL MELFORD'S XI 1962 CRICKET SCORECARD - HENRY BLOFELD AND BRIAN JOHNSTON Official scorecard for the match played at Ashtead on August 26th, Melford's team included many professional players such as Silk, Endean and Warr but I would have liked to see Henry Blofeld batting with Brian Johnston - I wonder if it happened. Scores not completed. Very good
