GENERAL INFORMATION Welcome to the 2017 Area 13 Bowling Competition. We are thankful to Highland Lanes and Dart Bowl for the use of their facilities. Please ask your coaching staff, athletes, families and fans to be respectful of the facilities. Thank you coaches for all your time and effort in preparing the athletes for this competition. A competition of this size is made possible with the effort of hundreds of volunteers. We ask that you treat them with respect and let them know how much we appreciate their help with the competition. Our goal at this competition is for the athletes to have the opportunity to show their best effort and to enjoy the experience of the competition. During the course of the competition as questions or concerns arise please feel free to direct them to either Chuck or Kathy Cliffton. Reminder: You may want to dress in layers for the air conditioning. MEDICAL FORMS Coaches MUST carry the medical forms for their athletes to all competitions. REGISTRATION Upon arrival, the HOD or bowling head coach is required to register or check-in their delegation. The Coach Check-In area will be located at the entrance of each bowling alley. Your athletes should wear the nametags included in this packet at the competition. Please make sure your athletes keep their nametags visible. This will help the competition run more efficiently, as well as help the volunteers to better interact with the athletes. 3 Scratches: Pls take the nametags of the athletes scratched to the lane volunteer your athlete was initially assigned to compete at. Wristbands for 1 on 1 assistance (for BOSASR & Behavioral issues) will be at the registration table. Wristbands will be available only for those delegations that have turned in the list of the athletes that will be in need of 1 on 1 assistance at the coaches meeting. If you have a 1 on 1, please make sure that those athletes are under their care at all times. 4
EQUIPMENT Coaches are responsible for providing any special equipment required such as bowling ramps or handle grip bowling balls. Area 13, Highland Lanes, and Dart Bowl will NOT be providing such equipment. If you need to borrow a ramp from another delegation, I would suggest that you contact the delegation s HOD prior to competition. If an athlete does not have a ramp to compete, he or she will be scratched. OPENING CEREMONIES: 1. For all 3 days, the opening ceremonies will be fairly brief so we will be announcing only the delegations that checked in at arrival. 2. If you have athletes participating in OC, be on stage 15 minutes early. MERCHANDISE Special Olympics Texas souvenirs will be available on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Highland Lanes and Dart Bowl. The schedule is as follows: Friday, November 3 rd Saturday, November 4 th Sunday, November 5 th 10:30am-1:00pm 1:00pm-4:00pm 10:30am-1:00pm The souvenir booth will be closed during Opening Ceremonies. PRO MED Urgent Care 2000 W Anderson Ln Austin, TX (512) Any athlete requiring medications must bring only the dosage needed. A responsible delegation member must administer medications; the medical support volunteers will not administer medications. This includes over the counter drugs. INSURANCE Special Olympics insurance provides secondary coverage only. In the event of accidental injury, which necessitates medical attention during a Special Olympics Texas event, the athlete, coach, or volunteer must first, submit all medical bills to their own accident insurance company. If unpaid balances remain after processing by the primary insurance company, a claim may be submitted through Special Olympics Texas insurance. If the injured party does not have insurance coverage, a claim may be submitted through Special Olympics Texas insurance. Included in this handbook is an accident claim form, to submit a claim to Special Olympics Texas insurance: (If you have any questions please contact the Kathy McClain (Chapter x 2933). GENERAL RULES No food or drinks will be allowed in the pit area. There will be NO ALCOHOL & SMOKING allowed in the facility during the competition on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Coaches and / or parents are not allowed in the pit area during competition unless there is a behavioral problem with an athlete and you need to remove him or her from the pit / competition. 6
Coaches and parents must remain behind the walls. Please do not stand in the entry/exit way. BOSINR (Bowling Singles Ramp): (see SIG) In the unassisted ramp bowl, the athlete aims the ramp into position unassisted. The athlete positions the ball on the ramp and pushes the ball down the ramp towards the target. A volunteer may assist with retrieving ball from return only. Absolutely no coaching allowed or guiding of ramp. (SIG page R-3) Coaches will not be allowed in the pit areas, including during ramp unassisted bowling. Coaches may direct volunteers regarding ramp placement if necessary. BOSASR (Bowling Singles Assisted Ramp): (see SIG) In the assisted ramp bowl, the athlete aims the ramp into position with assistance. The athlete positions the ball on the ramp with assistance and pushes the ball down the ramp towards the target. An assistant may guide, align, or direct the ramp and athlete, but may not support or assist with the ball s forward movement. Tardy Bowlers: (SIG page R-4) Bowlers arriving prior to the end of the third frame can bowl and compete for an award. Bowlers arriving after the completion of the third frame must sit out the remainder of the first game and be allowed to bowl the remaining games for a participation ribbon only. Athletes MUST remain in the PIT while the GMS system generates results. Athletes will be awarded in their pit. DO NOT REMOVE your athlete. HEATS Athletes have been grouped according to age, gender, and ability. The ability was determined by the athlete s average score, which was submitted on the entry form. At Competition when the scores are entered into the computer, they will automatically be handicapped. Athletes of all ages will bowl two games according to the updated SIG rules. SCOREKEEPING The automatic scorekeepers will do all scorekeeping. There will be a lane monitor to manually make any corrections should an athlete bowl out of turn or equipment malfunction. At the end of the game, each individual athlete s score will be entered. At the end of the series of the two games, the individual game scores will be taken from the recap sheet and entered onto a computer to calculate the average and award placement. As in last year s competition a 100% rabbit percentage will be utilized. This means that if an athlete / doubles pair / team has a three-game average that is double the entry score or greater, then the athlete / doubles pair / team will be rabbited and awarded in a heat with scores that are more appropriate to the final result. The athletes final scores are checked against the rabbit score for their heat before being entered into the GMS system. The scores are then entered into GMS to have the handicap added to their score and awards placement calculated (1 st 8 th ). Foul lines will be on during all events. If a foul line is triggered by an athlete s foot or a ramp, the athlete will receive a score of 0 for that roll. 7
AVERAGE (What is submitted as entry score on athlete registration form): Every bowler has an average (this is determined by the 15 games that they must bowl prior to competition). To determine the average, simply add up the scores of the 15 games bowled in training and divide by 15. EXAMPLE: Bill s 15 highest scores from bowling trainings are: = 1,485 TOTAL SCORE Take this total score of 15 games and divide it by 15: (1,485 divided by 15 = 99). Therefore, 99 is Bill s bowling average. Bill s coach would enter his average as 99 on the athlete entry form. HANDICAP SCORING AT COMPETITION: (How the final score is determined.) SOTX uses a 100% of 200 handicap scoring system. EXAMPLE: Bill has a 99 average, so his handicap would be 200 minus his average: (200 99= 101). Therefore, Bill has a handicap of 101. For every game that Bill bowls during the competition, he will have 101 pins added to his score. Bill Game 1 Score 102 (+101) = 203 Game 2 Score 81 (+101) = 182 Game 3 Score 133 (+101) = 234 The important thing to note is that Bill may end up bowling against bowlers with different handicaps than his (because they have a different average). Therefore, it is possible that in some cases, the bowler who knocks over the most pins will not get first place once the handicap is factored into the final score. RULES The Rules Committee will ensure that the Official Special Olympics Sports Rules are followed and enforced. This committee shall be the final authority for all rules interpretations and appeals during each of the games. Rules Committee: Chuck & Kathy Clifton Blake Krass Amy Wiesenhutter Area 13 Competition Director Area 13 Competition Director Coaches Representative Protests shall not be considered if they are based solely on a decision involving the accuracy or judgment on the part of an official. Protests will be considered for the following: 1. Misinterpretations of bowling rules 2. Failure of an official to apply the correct rule 8
3. Failure to impose the correct penalty for a given violation All protests must be filed in writing within thirty (30) minutes of the completion of the event in which the incident occurred. A protest form is included in this coach s handbook. Upon completion, the form must be submitted to Jason Miller for consideration.8 AWARDS Awards will be presented on a two or three game total depending on age. Medals will be presented to athletes placing 1 st through 3 rd place. Ribbons will be presented to athletes 4 th through 5 th place. To avoid congestion, please have athletes remain in the pit area when their competition is completed. The awards team will award them on their lane. We ask that coaches assist athletes in returning the bowling shoes and retrieving their street shoes. Athletes must remain in the pit. A good time to do this may be while the score sheet is being walked up to the results table. VOLUNTEER INFORMATION Our goal is to have the bowling volunteers organized as outlined below: One lane assistant per lane to keep athletes bowling in order; One lane monitor assigned every 6-8 lanes. NOTE: We request any parent who wishes to volunteer as a lane assistant work on a lane other than the lane in which their child is bowling. Please respect this rule as it helps the competition run more smoothly. The exception to this rule is if their athlete has special medical needs. All day of event volunteers should check in at the volunteer registration table. PLS BE COURTEOUS TO ALL VOLUNTEERS. REMEMBER THAT WITHOUT THEM, THERE WOULD BE NO COMPETITION. REMINDER TO ALL COACHES, FAMILY MEMBERS AND VOLUNTEERS NO SMOKING OR CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL IS ALLOWED INSIDE EACH FACILITY FOR THE DURATION OF THIS EVENT. IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER *Each shift will begin at the designated time. Coaches are responsible for having their athletes at the assigned lanes ready to bowl at the designated time. 9
Like last year, we will give teams the choice of having a 1 on 1 assistant with their ramp assisted athletes ONLY. The RULES are as follows: o The assistant cannot be a coach BUT he/she can be a parent, staff, or friend. o The assistant will ONLY be allowed to work with his/her assigned athlete and not with any of the other athletes in that lane. o An assistant my guide, align, or direct the ramp and Athlete, but may not support or assist with the ball s forward movement. BE AWARE THAT AT CHAPTER GAMES THIS OPTION WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE. THIS IS ONLY AN OPTION FOR AREA COMPETITION. Wristbands for 1-on-1 assistance (for BOSASR & Behavioral issues) will be at the registration table. Wristbands will be available only for those delegations that have turned in the list of the athletes that will be in need of 1-on-1 assistance, at the coaches meeting. If you have a 1-on-1, please make sure that those athletes are under their care at all times (remember previous incidents). If you don t know the athlete s lane or you don t see the name on the monitor of their assigned lane, pls go to the coaches registration table. There will be a binder with all the current information and changes if any. ***Scratches: Need to turn in all your scratches by the end of the Coaches Meeting. If at any time until then you know athletes will not be able to compete, please us their names so we can scratch them on our heat sheets. Event Scratches: Games will begin on time, so please: Take the name tags of athletes to be scratched to the assigned lane assistant or monitor. If a ball gets stuck in the gutter, ONLY the Showplace Lanes & SOTX staff will be allowed to get on the lane and fix the problem. No coaches or volunteers will be allowed to do so. 10
Coaches must explain families the concept of handicap scoring because it s not compatible with the scores that appear on the monitor and in the past this has caused serious confusion & unnecessary unpleasant situations. Coaches must explain families the concept of the RABBIT RULE. ALLOTED TIME PER SHIFT: Is 1h 45min. In order to stay on time we will need assistance in having your athletes at their lanes on time, getting teams ready for Opening Ceremonies, in general keeping the pace of events moving. Before a game runs over-time, we will split up the athletes in separate lanes to increase the pace and give them the opportunity to complete their game. If they still haven t finish by the end of their assigned game time, we will stop the game and award according to the scores at hand. Remember, NO coaching Violation of coach s conduct. 11
