3 WELCOME NATIONAL CRICKET INCLUSION CHAMPIONSHIPS The Victorian Government is proud to support the 2017 National Cricket Inclusion Championships, another date on our State s events calendar that is the envy of the world. Victoria lives and breathes sport. We re home to some of the biggest events in the world including the recent Boxing Day Test and the upcoming T20 double header at Simonds Stadium. We re delighted to stage the 2017 National Cricket Inclusion Championships in Geelong. The Championships will feature more than 200 players competing in three divisions; blind and vision impaired, deaf and hard of hearing, and cricketers with an intellectual disability. With games being played in Twenty20 format, the Championships will be the first time that these three divisions will be played as part of one competition. Competitors and spectators can look forward to an action-packed competition and a great atmosphere with something for everyone. The Victorian Government is proud to have provided support to Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia through the Significant Sporting Events Program to stage this fantastic event in Geelong until Events like these provide an opportunity to shine the spotlight on Victoria and our world-class sports and entertainment venues. Significant events not only build on our reputation as the sporting capital of the world but further our standing as a multicultural, inclusive, and liveable State. I invite all our guests to experience all the delights Victoria has to offer starting with Geelong. There s an enviable array of stunning parks and open spaces, breathtaking waterfronts, museums, galleries and family-friendly beaches to enjoy. I wish all visitors, competitors and officials a safe and exciting National Cricket Inclusion Championships and an enjoyable stay here in Victoria. HON JOHN EREN MP Minister for Sport, Tourism and Major Events
4 WELCOME On behalf of the City of Greater Geelong, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the region for the National Cricket Inclusion Championships. We are thrilled to host approximately 200 of our nation s best cricket players with a disability, as well as the many coaches, support staff, family, friends and spectators. Geelong is a thriving sports hub home of the Cats and host to many major events including the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, Festival of Sails and the International Australian Airshow. We have some of the best cricket grounds in the state and it is going to be terrific to see Australia s leading cricketers displaying their skills and athleticism in a week of T20 and One Day matches on our turf. Geelong has a rich cricket history with our Barwon Region having the highest regional cricket participation rate in Victoria with over 7,000 players. Geelong is also an inclusive city with a national profile in social inclusion and disability with the headquarters of the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) in Central Geelong. We also host of the annual Having a Say conference, the largest of its kind in Australia. The National Cricket Inclusion Championships tournament promotes a positive message of inclusion to the community and to people living with a disability. It will be fantastic to see more people of all ages and backgrounds encouraged and inspired by this competition. Best of luck to all of the players and officials involved in the championships. Enjoy spending time in Greater Geelong and exploring the region. PETER DORLING City of Greater Geelong Administrator 4 NCIC.CRICKET.COM.AU
5 Welcome to Geelong for the Cricket Australia National Cricket Inclusion Championships. For the first time, cricketers with an intellectual disability will play alongside deaf and hard of hearing, and blind and vision impaired cricketers in a National Championships. Australian cricket is determined to continue making the game more accessible to people from all walks of life. One in five Australians live with a disability, so it is important to provide meaningful opportunities for cricketers who are blind, deaf or have an intellectual disability. Those players now have the chance to represent their state or territory. It is all about providing people with opportunities to play the game and reach their full potential. It is a big year for Australian Cricket and it is only going to get bigger with this National Cricket Inclusion Championships, which wouldn t be a possibility without great support from around the country. Thank you to the Commonwealth Bank, Victorian Government, Cricket Victoria, City of Greater Geelong, Lord s Taverners Australia and Karingal St Laurence for your support. It s now over to the officials, teams, tournament staff and most importantly the players to get the 2017 Cricket Australia National Cricket Inclusion Championships started. Good luck to everyone involved. JAMES SUTHERLAND CEO Cricket Australia

13 What is the Spirit of Cricket? The laws of cricket clearly explain the expectations of how participants will behave on the field, and they also outline sanctions should these expectations not be met. The explanation that follows is taken from the MCC Laws of Cricket, which is universally applied across all countries and cultures. Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its Laws but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself. The role of the captain Team captains hold the main responsibility for ensuring the spirit of fair play is maintained. There are two laws that reinforce this principle: Responsibility of players The captains are responsible at all times for ensuring that play is conducted within the Spirit of the Game as well as within the laws. Player s conduct In the event of a player failing to comply with instructions by an umpire, or criticising by word or action the decisions of an umpire, or showing dissent, or generally behaving in a manner which might bring the game into disrepute, the umpire concerned shall in the first place report the matter to the other umpire and to the player s captain, and instruct the latter to take action. Fair and unfair play According to the Laws the umpires are the sole judges of fair and unfair play. The umpires may intervene at any time and it is the responsibility of the captain to take action where required. Umpire intervention The umpires are authorised to intervene in cases of time wasting, damaging the pitch, dangerous or unfair bowling, tampering with the ball, and any other action that they consider to be unfair. Respect The Spirit of the Game involves respect for your opponents, your own captain and team, the role of the umpires, the game and its traditional values. Violations It is against the spirit of the game to: dispute an umpire s decision by word, action, or gesture; direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire; and to indulge in cheating or any sharp practice (for instance, to: appeal knowing that the batsman is not out; advance towards an umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing; or to seek to distract an opponent either verbally or by harassment with persistent clapping or unnecessary noise under the guise of enthusiasm and motivation of one s own side). Violence There is no place for any act of violence on the field of play. Players Captains and umpires together set the tone for the conduct of a cricket match. Every player is expected to make an important contribution to this.
