1 GREATER IOWA SCHOLARSHIP BOWLING TOUR AUGUST 26, 2018 MAY CITY BOWL CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER EVENT # 262 THANKS TO OUR TITLE SPONSOR STORM BOWLING EQUIPMENT SPECIAL THANKS TO TROPHY KING OFFICIAL AWARDS SPONSOR OF THE GISBT AGAIN IN DODGE CLAIMS WIN # 9 CRAWFORD BACK IN WINNER S CIRCLE FOR 7th TIME DODGE BROTHERS DUEL FOR CHAMPIONSHIP In a thrilling duel with his younger brother Brandon, Anthony Dodge got the GISBT s 27th season underway by returning to the Winner s Circle for the 9th time in his career. Dodge, a 21 year-old southpaw, headed into the finals in 2nd place, trailing younger brother Brandon by just 62 pins. Over the next 8 matches, they traded the lead back and forth before Anthony won a position round battle that proved to be the difference in this contest. As mentioned, Dodge has won 9 times on tour, with this being his 3rd victory at May City Bowl (the others came in August and December 2016). His other 6 wins have come in 6 different centers (Cadillac Lanes, Rose Bowl, Big River Bowling, Cedar Rapids Bowling Center, Lancer Lanes and Maple Lanes). This was the 24th match play finals of Dodge s brilliant career. In the 26-season history of the GISBT, there have only been 5 players in the boy s division who have qualified for at least 24 match play finals in their careers. They are Joe Roseman (40), A.J. Chapman (36), Adam Morse (33), Drew Balta (24) and Dodge (24). For his 16 games, The 21 year-old averaged He took home the championship plaque and a $350 scholarship. Congratulations, Anthony!

2 YOUNGER BROTHER BRANDON TAKES RUNNER-UP Brandon Dodge was in great form at the season opener, and it resulted in a runner-up finish. Dodge, who captured his first tour title at last season s March event in Muscatine, was on his game in qualifying, averaging for his 8 game block. He continued that great form throughout match play, finding himself in a 3-way battle for the championship with older brother Anthony, and Brent Boho. Just 59 pins separated the threesome heading into the position round, with Brandon leading by 38 pins. Ultimately, the defeat was the difference, with Brandon relegated to runner-up status. This was the 3rd GISBT match play finals appearance for the 19 year-old. He took home the high qualifier medal and a $250 scholarship for his performance. BOHO BAGS 3rd Brent Boho, just a day after turning 21, celebrated a great weekend with a great finish. The 2-hander from Colgate, Wisconsin took home a $225 scholarship for his 3rd place performance. Appearing in the 5th GISBT finals of his career, Boho trailed by as many as 156 pins before staging a rally midway through match play; he eventually trailed by just 59 pins heading into the position round, but he failed to advance with a final game of 170. The former Junior Team USA member matched his best finish on tour; he previously finished 3rd at the January 2017 event in Davenport. TALENTED 106-PLAYER FIELD OPENS GISBT SEASON #27 An impressive starting field of 106 players kicked off the GISBT campaign. The field was comprised of 73 boys and 33 girls. This represents the largest season opener in 3 years, and the tour s largest starting field since the April 2016 event, which drew 111 entries. There were 12 past champions in the field, and a whopping 21 players began their GISBT careers at this month s event as well. We welcome all of our new and returning players for another exciting season! POWERFUL MARTIN PLACES 4th Sean Martin II returned to the finals for the 2nd time in his career. The powerful 2-hander from Dayton, Ohio finished with a bang by cranking out a big 280 in his final match to leapfrog into 4th place. This matched his best finish on tour; he also finished 4th last March in Muscatine. The 19 year-old took home a $200 award for his finish. SIKKEMA SECURES 5th Seth Sikkema was this month s 5th place finisher. Appearing in the 6th match play finals of his career, the 2- hander from Fulton, Illinois took home a $175 scholarship. PAST CHAMP HIBBARD TAKES 6th Billy Hibbard continued his great bowling with a 6th place showing. The right-hander from Mukwonago, Wisconsin hauled in a $150 scholarship as a result of his high finish. Hibbard, 20, was appearing in the 10th match play finals of his GISBT career. He completed a great weekend, as he also captured Saturday s Kick-off Classic.

3 LABRADOR CLAIMS 7th Jonathan Labrador finished 7th; the 21 year-old from Carolina, Puerto Rico qualified for his 6th match play finals at this month s event. He earned a $125 scholarship for his day s work. FOX FINISHES 8th IN TOUR DEBUT Nick Fox, 17, made a successful GISBT debut at this month s event. The lanky right-hander from Elmwood Park, Illinois, finished in 8th place, taking home a $120 scholarship. SRAMEK THRILLS CROWD WITH 300 Brenden Sramek reeled off 12 straight strikes to record the day s only honor score; that came in the form of a 300 game during his qualifying round, and it netted the right-hander from Bellevue, Nebraska the $50 scholarship for having this month s high game out of the money. Congratulations to the top 2 high school age or younger finishers at this month s event Ray Wiegand, who finished 11th, and Dale Weaver who finished 19th. 7 CRAWFORD RETURNS TO WINNER S CIRCLE FOR 7th TIME POSTS DOMINANT VICTORY IN SEASON OPENER CRAWFORD DOMINATES RIVALS IN GARNERING WIN # 7 It s hard to imagine but it had been exactly 2 years since Kayla Crawford last hoisted a GISBT championship plaque. Although she had amassed a collection of several finals over the past 2 seasons, the tenacious right-hander had been stuck on a half dozen tour victories since claiming the season opener 2 years ago in August That all changed this month, as the 21 year-old was razor sharp all afternoon, posting a dominating win the 7th of her tour career. Crawford set a fast pace in qualifying by averaging for her first 8 game block. That was enough to lead the field by a whopping 134 pins heading into match play. There, she stretched that lead, and had the tournament under lock and key heading into the position round. Despite losing the match to runner-up Kaitlyn Keith ( ), her margin of victory was an impressive 151 pins. She commented earlier during the week that she had implemented a few changes in her game, and those changes seemed to gain momentum as the weekend went on. By Sunday evening, it was obvious that Crawford, who has already amassed one of the glitziest resumes in tour history, was back in top form. CHAMP REACHES 30 MATCH PLAY FINALS This was the 30th match play finals appearance of Crawford s career. Only 7 girls in tour history have qualified for more match play finals in their careers. They are Emily Papke (50), Katie Maher (44), Brittany Smith (42), Melissa Hurst (34), Sara Rinkenberger (32), Amanda Burgoyne (32) and Andrea Mingee (31). The Silvis, Illinois resident took home a $300 scholarship for her day s work. She averaged for her 14 games. That meant she out-averaged all 106 players in the field, including all 73 competitors in the boy s division as well. Congratulations, Kayla! KEITH CLAIMS 4th RUNNER-UP OF CAREER Kaitlyn Keith turned in another fine performance at this year s season opener. The right-handed stroker from Bloomingdale, Illinois earned runner-up honors, and the accompanying $225 scholarship. This was the 5th match play finals appearance of her career, with 4 of those resulting in runner-up finishes. She also finished runner-up to Crawford in Saturday s Kick-off Classic. Keith qualified in 2nd place, averaged for her 6 matches, and posting a 4-2 match play record. Those statistics would have been good enough to win on many occasions. However, this time out, the 20 year-old was overwhelmed by the eventual champ, despite whipping Crawford in the position round tussel. Most tour insiders conclude that it s only a matter of time before Keith reaches the Winner s Circle. GOLDSBERRY TAKES 3rd Abby Goldsberry, 20, made her match play debut at this month s event, and it resulted in a 3rd place finish. The slender Bettendorf, Iowa native found her stride in match play, winning her position round battle to secure 3rd place and the accompanying $175 scholarship.

8 KOPROWITZ 4th IN TOUR DEBUT Natalie Koprowitz made a great GISBT debut at this month s tour stop. The talented 19 year-old from Girard, Illinois was solid all day, eventually finishing in 4th place. Koprowitz has enjoyed a successful career on the Midwest scholarship circuit, and earned the Alberta E Crowe Star of Tomorrow Award. She earned a $150 scholarship as a result of her high finish. TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS WINNER KELLY SNARES 5th Michaela Kelly was this month s 5th place finisher. In the 14th match play finals of her career, the 22 yearold from Bettendorf, Iowa took home a $130 scholarship. EVANS FINISHES 6th Gabi Evans, 17, rounded out this month s girl s finals field. Evans, from Muscatine, Iowa, took home a $120 scholarship for her efforts. This was the 3rd match play appearance of her promising career. Kaitlyn Moore, from Keokuk, Iowa, fired a 255 in her qualifying round, and that was this month s highest game out of the money, earning her a $50 scholarship. This month s top 2 high school age or younger finishers were Gabi Evans from Muscatine, Iowa, who qualified for the match play finals, finishing 6th, and Rachel Moore, of Keokuk, Iowa, who finished 12th; she earned a $55 scholarship. 13 PLEASE REVIEW IMPORTANT GISBT RULE CHANGES IN Several important changes are being implemented in These changes come as we continue to ensure the GISBT remains one of the leading and most prestigious scholarship bowling tours in America. POINT FORMAT Over the past 2 seasons, our tour has implemented a more challenging lane condition at each event. This has resulted in an entirely new point format this season. Please see the point standings at the end of this newsletter for a definition of points being awarded. BIG WEEKEND SATURDAY EVENT NOW AN OFFICIAL GISBT STOP For the first time ever, the Saturday event in April, known as the Big Weekend, will be recognized as an official GISBT event. The format will remain the same (6 games qualifying and 6 games of match play for both boy s and girl s divisions), but it will carry all the rewards of a GISBT championship. This also means that the April events, with 2 days of exciting competition, will be especially meaningful in determining all seasonal awards, and Tournament of Champions berths. And because there are now 10 regular season events, you must compete in 6 of them in order to be eligible for the year-end Tournament of Champions. So mark April 6 & 7, 2019 on your calendars! SPECIAL CASHERS BEING AWARDED Since our tour began, we ve always tried to enjoy a prize fund which offers a worthy championship prize, and also award as many scholarship prizes as possible. This season, we will be guaranteeing the top 2 noncollegiate bowlers a scholarship award. Our tour s older bowlers have always had a dominant role in final results, but throughout history, many of our younger bowlers have also been major factors as well. Virtually every one of our tour s stars have gotten their start on tour at a young age. This has been the trend for the past 26 seasons, and this season we will be ensuring more cash spots than ever before in tour history. A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE GISBT DIRECTORS I began my tenure as Tournament Director of the GISBT in July 1999, and this marks my 20th season serving in that capacity. After a youth bowling career that ended in May 2003, Brooke Flannagan, along with her mother Patty Hale, began serving as Tournament Directors; this will be their 16th season. Over the past 2 decades, administering the GISBT includes a hectic workload. However, along with this workload, unforgettable rewards have come our way as well. Not in the way of wealth or fame, but in the friendships, memories, journeys and indelible images that we ve been privileged to maintain. Having a front row seat to witness so many of the Midwest s most promising young bowlers is an honor for all of us. We thank each of your our members and the incredible parents and friends who travel and support you as you pursue your dreams.
