2 Eligibility: Facility: Entry Form: The High School Final competition will run in accordance to the U.S. Figure Skating High School Competition Handbook and Technical Rulebook document found on the USFS High School Programs webpage, as well as being conducted in accordance with the rules and regulations of U.S. Figure Skating, as set forth in the current rulebook and any pertinent updates which have been posted on the U.S. Figure Skating website. This announcement and the High School Competition Handbook and Technical Rulebook will take precedence if there is a conflict with the U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook. This competition is open to all eligible, restricted, reinstated or readmitted persons as defined by the Eligibility Rules, and is a currently registered member of a U.S. Figure Skating member club, or an individual member in accordance with the current rulebook. Please refer to the current rulebook for non-u.s. Citizens. This event will be held at Thornton Park Ice Arena located at 3301 Warrensville Center Road, Shaker Heights, Ohio, ONLINE ENTRY ONLY: Online entry with secure credit card payment is available at or PLEASE SEE SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR ONLINE ENTRY LATER IN THIS ANNOUNCEMENT. Online entry must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on December 15, Individual entries will be accepted online for Freeskate, Short Program/Compulsory, Showcase, Interpretive, Solo Dance, Solo Free Dance, Moves in the Field and Maneuver Team Events. The High School Affiliated Club (HSAC) Team Contact must register the team online for the That s Entertainment Group Event (which has a separate fee). You may submit your entries prior to receiving your HSAC approval (see rule 2 below). Once received from US Figure Skating, the HSAC certificate must be sent to Stacey Krantz at ohhscompetition@gmail.com. Inquiries: ohhscompetition@gmail.com or Stacey Krantz or Lauren Rivchun HIGH SCHOOL TEAM COMPETITION RULES, ELIGIBILITY & ENTRY RESTRICTIONS Figure Skating Championship Page 2 Each athlete may participate in a maximum of five competitive events, but not more than one of each of the following: one free skate, one compulsory or one short program, one team maneuver, one showcase, one interpretive, one moves in the field to music and two solo dances. Each participating high school may have a maximum of 35 starts (for high school members), including individual events and team maneuvers. Further, each high school may have no more than five entries in any of the senior events and no more than three entries in any other individual event. Men s and ladies events in singles free skating and short/compulsory will be separate events whenever possible, but men and ladies may compete in the same event in solo dance, moves, interpretive, team and showcase.

3 Rules: This competition is a Special Competition, as defined in rule 3200 of the Official 2018 US Figure Skating Rulebook. As such, this Announcement will take precedence when there is a conflict with US Figure Skating Competition Rules or Skating Standard Regulations. 1. Eligible persons who are members in good standing of a School Affiliated Club (SAC) of the US Figure Skating may compete. School Affiliated Club membership must be renewed annually through US Figure Skating by the SAC Team Advisor. All High School Teams participating in high school competitions must register with U.S. Figure Skating by filling out the School Affiliated Club (SAC) Membership and Team Registration Form and paying required annual membership dues. This application can be found on the High School Programs tab of the USFS website at and in the High School Competition Handbook. 2. All combined teams must list all participating schools on the team application form. If combined teams are not from the same school district, the following rules apply: An administrator from each school must approval or sign the team entry form (see or the entryeeze competiton homepage for the paper copy of the SAC). All skaters from the combined schools must be allowed to skate on the team. Combined teams not adhering to these guidelines will be disqualified. Team advisors should forward approval or paper form to the competition chair along with HSAC certificate from USFSA. 3. All skaters must be members in good standing of US Figure Skating. 4. Competitors must currently be enrolled in and attend as full time students the public or private high school (or feeder school see Rule 5) they represent or be home schooled and live in Ohio. Please see eligibility clarifications for feeder schools below. Competitors may not represent more than ONE high school team. 5. Teams must consist of at least two competitors from a HSAC. Two competitors on each team must be in grades 9-12 representing one high school or a unified team. High school teams may recruit 5 th 8 th grade students of the feeder school(s) to that high school. (Written documentation of the feeder relationship must be included with the application.) 6. A combined team must be approved by the competition committee. A combined team may represent two or more high schools. Each representative high school on a combined team must have at least one high school student. Newly formed combined teams may only have a total of 7 high school students on their team (there is no restriction on the number of members in grade 5-8). Established combined teams (those who have a HSAC on file with USFS for the previous competitive year) may have greater than 7 high school members as long as those members represent one of the high schools represented in the initial established team. Established combined teams may not change the high schools that constitute the combined team if they are to be considered established. 7. Skaters will be separated into HS Qualifying (grade 9-12) and HS Non-qualifying (grades 5-8) groups for each event except Maneuver Teams and Mini Production and Ensemble. Team events may be a combination of qualifying and non-qualifying skaters but must have at least one high school member for points earned to count towards the high school total. 8. The competition s co-chairs in consultation with the competition referee will make final approval of a team s membership. Figure Skating Championship Page 3

4 9. Team members may include both ladies and men. 10. Competitors may skate up one freeskate, moves or dance test level in any event. 11. There will be no age limit on any event except Juvenile and Intermediate as defined by USFS 12. There is a limit of five (5) individual/team events per skater (excluding That s Entertainment events). 13. During the competition, team members or their Team Advisor may be at the boards but PRIVATE COACHES ARE NOT PERMITTED RINKSIDE/AT THE BOARDS. 14. For Free Skate events only, a competitor who won the event in the prior year may not compete at the same level (except senior or if the event is an exhibition). 15. Team banners and decorations are encouraged. 16. No food is allowed in the locker rooms. 17. Unsportsmanlike conduct and foul language will not be tolerated and is grounds for disqualification. Test Level: Registered US Figure Skating free skate, moves and dance test level as of December 15, Music: Schedule: CD s only (bring two). Mark with skater s name and event. All CD s must be turned in at registration. Competition schedules will be ed and posted to the web at: and as soon as possible after the deadline. To receive a schedule, you must provide your address. Refunds: Full refunds, minus a processing fee of 3.5%, are available if withdrawal is prior to December 15, After December 15, 2018, entry refunds are only available if the competition or event is not held or there is a death in the competitor s immediate family. If you register online, the processing fee is not refundable for any reason. Admission: Final Rounds: Judging: Scoring: No admission will be charged. All events are final rounds. The 6.0 judging system will be used for all events. Individual team members acquire points accumulated to determine team placements. Points to be awarded are based on the number of skaters. 5 skaters=5 points for 1 st, 4 points for 2 nd, 3 points for 3 rd, 2 points for 4 th, and 1 point for 5 th. 4 skaters=4 points for 1 st, 3 points for 2 nd, 2 points for 3 rd, and 1 point for 4 th 3 or less skaters=3 points for 1 st, 2 points for 2 nd, and 1 point for 3rd. Tied placements earn full points for that placement. Awards: 1. Individual medals will be awarded to skaters for 1 st through 3rd place in each event. Figure Skating Championship Page 4

Plaques will be awarded to the 1 st place team in each type of event (free skating, short program/compulsory moves, artistic showcase/interpretive, team maneuvers, moves in the field to music and solo dance/solo free dance. 3. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies will be awarded to the teams with the most accumulated points for all events combined. 4. Only points earned from high school skaters (qualifying entries) will be factored in the final event and team awards scores. 5. All maneuver team event points will factor into total team points providing there is at least one high school skater on the team. 6.Team Spirit Award will go to the team receiving the most votes from the judges. Practice Ice: Practice ice will be available at Thornton Park Ice Arena the mornings of the events. A practice ice schedule will be posted with the schedule and be available for purchase on Entreezye or in person the day of the competition. Videos/Photos: Action Photos and Video will be available. The Competition Committee reserves the right to limit the number of entries, eliminate events due to insufficient entries, and combine or divide groups as necessary. ELIGIBILITY CLARIFICATIONS FOR FEEDER SCHOOLS AND HOME SCHOOLED COMPETITORS All 5th through 8th grade students who attend a K-12 private school or a feeder school which leads either directly or indirectly to the high school may compete on behalf of the associated high school no matter how the school or school district classifies the grade levels in the "middle school" or "junior high." For example, 5th grade students of a school district with a 6th through 8th grade middle school may still compete on behalf of the high school even if the student is attending an elementary school in the district. 5th through 8th grade students who are attending a private or parochial school that terminates in grade 8 may compete on behalf of the public high school of the school district in which they reside. Proof of residency must be provided via a copy of a utility bill in the custodial parent(s)' name(s). Alternatively, 8th grade students of private schools that do not have an associated high school and who have determined which private high school they will attend may apply by letter to the competition co-chair for permission to compete on behalf of the aforementioned high school. This exception applies to 8th grade students only. 5th through 12th grade students who are homeschooled may compete on behalf of the public high school located in the school district in which they reside. 6 Each HSAC team member may enter up to a maximum of five (5) individual and/or team events. Each HSAC team may not have more than 35 total high school starts for the competition. Be sure to coordinate your events PRIOR to registering. SINGLES FREE SKATE There is a limit of no more than five HS entries in the senior event and no more than three HS entries in any other individual event in this event. The event will be judged according to the well balanced program requirements in the latest US Figure Skating Rule Book. Skaters may skate at their highest Free Skate level passed or one level higher. Juvenile and Open Juvenile and/or Ladies and Men may be combined at the discretion of the referee depending on number of entries. All times are plus or minus 10 seconds. Step sequence - circular Figure Skating Championship Page 7 MUSIC INTERPRETATION Skaters must enter at their current Free Skate level passed or one level higher. Categories will include Pre-preliminary, Preliminary, Pre-Juvenile, Juvenile, Intermediate, Novice, and Junior/Senior. Music Interpretation consists of a single program composed entirely by the skater demonstrating ability to interpret music by combining moves, turns, footwork, jumps and spins. A Warm-up period consists of 1 minute without music followed by 3 minutes with the selected music played twice. Skaters will then leave the ice and be taken to a locker room where there will be no communications with teammates or parents. Each skater will hear the music one more time with his/her back to the ice at rink side while the prior competitor is performing. The judges give one mark only, and the emphasis is on interpretation of the music. This event may be judged in combination with guest judges. Levels may be combined due to lack of entries. The duration of music will be approximately 1:30 minutes for all levels. There is a limit of no more than three HS entries in any level. ARTISTIC SHOWCASE 1. There is a limit of no more than five HS entries in the senior event and no more than three HS entries in any

8 other individual event in this event 2. Skaters will have prepared a program with music of their choice. Vocal music is permitted. 3. There are no required elements in this event. Skaters will be judged on originality, musical and artistic expression, audience appeal, choreography and costume. 4. The individual event durations are maximum times and are based on the National Showcase time guidelines which may vary significantly with other area competition. 5. Thirty seconds will be allowed before each performance for placement of props. The referee may disallow props that are deemed dangerous to the skater (e.g. sharp objects, feathers, dangling beads, loose paper, and items that may affect the conditions of the ice.) 6. Technical elements will be judged only on their appropriateness to the music. 7. Guest judges may be used for this event. 8. Skaters may not compete below their US Figure Skating freeskate test level but may skate up one level higher. In the interest of running an event, test levels may be combined if entry numbers are low. Skaters placing fourth and higher in Preliminary and higher artistic/showcase solo events including adult events, may be qualified to enter the next National Showcase. 9 SOLO DANCE Judging: Performances will be judged using the 6.0 judging system with two marks given for each performance. Each dance will be judged as a separate event and scores will be combined for the final result. Refer to the 2017 Solo Dance Series Handbook found at: for Solo Free Dance rules and details. MANEUVER TEAM EVENTS 1. A HSAC team may enter only one team in each competitive level. 2. Each team will select 2 4 skaters to compete the 4 elements for each team event. 3. Each team member may compete up to 2 elements in each team event. If possible, teams with more than 4 skaters should select a different group of skaters for the spin event than those chosen to compete in the maneuver event to allow more skaters to participate. 4. Teams must attempt all the listed elements in each category: If a team has one athlete perform more than half of the elements, anything over half of the elements performed by that athlete will receive no credit. 5. If a competitor performs an element higher than that listed, that element will receive no credit. For example, if the element specified is a Salchow jump and the competitor performs a double Salchow jump, no credit is given for this element. 6. An athlete may compete for only one team. Athletes may skate up to any level they desire, but they may not compete on a team at a lower level than the highest test they have passed. Each program must contain the specified moves within the required time duration. Note: The time duration is maximum time no deduction will be given for being under the specified time. The moves may be skated in any order. Music may be vocal or instrumental. Skaters must wear all black skating attire or costume This will be judged on the 6.0 system. Skaters receive two marks. The technical mark will be based on the focuses of the specified moves. Difficulty of transitional elements will not be rewarded in the technical mark. The presentation mark will be based on carriage, projection, style, ice coverage, phrasing of movements to music and creativity of transitional elements. 12 We are offering two additional group events this year at the 2019 OHHS competition. The emphasis of both group events will be on the entertainment value rather than technical content. Elements to be considered in judging will be illustration of character, music interpretation, costuming, and audience appeal. There will be two different group events: Mini Production Ensemble and Production Ensemble. Overall Requirements Teams may enter either the Mini Production or Production Ensemble but not both. A maximum of one group may represent each school. All levels of skaters may participate in the number Music with vocals allowed Props allowed but must be carried on and off ice by skaters taking no more than 1 (one) minute to set up. No flame or smoke, wet mops, whipped or shaving cream, or any substance that may alter the ice in any way. No cap guns or loud noises. Mini Production Ensemble Requirements A minimum of 3 and a maximum of 7 skaters may participate in the group number Maximum music time 3:10 minutes Production Ensemble Requirements A minimum of 8 skaters may participate in the group number Maximum music time 6:15 minutes These production ensemble events will NOT be counted toward the final team point scores. They will be considered extra events and will not count as a fifth event for the individual skaters. Each skater will be permitted to enter five (5) other events. THIS IS CONSIDERED A SEPARATE EVENT AND THE COST IS $50 FOR MINI PRODUCTION AND $75 FOR PRODUCTION ENSEMBLE PER GROUP ENTRY. A SKATER PARTICIPATING IN ONLY THAT S ENTERTAINMENT, AND NOT OTHER EVENTS, NEEDS TO REGISTER FOR THE EVENT AND PAY THE $25 REGISTRATION FEE ON ENTRYEEZE.
