Director, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, & Principal Investigator Mr.K.Ramachandra Reddy Co-Principal Investigator and Professor & Head Dr. C. Ramesh Assistant Professor Mr.K.Mani Lecturer Department of Biostatistics and Cancer Registry The Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology is a comprehensive centre for cancer research and treatment in Karnataka and is one of the Regional Cancer Centres in the country, offering sophisticated diagnostic and treatment services to ever increasing numbers of the cancer afflicted from all over Karnataka State and adjoining areas of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra and Goa. THe Institute started in 1973 with just 50 beds currently has 429 inpatient beds. Everyday new patients and more than 650 follow-up patients visit the hospital. The Institute being a referral cancer centre and in view of the facilities available, about 70 percent of the patients are referred by various medical institutions and private practitioners. Over 13,000 new cases are registered annually and about 1.90 lakhs follow-up patients are registered each year. More than 18% of patients are registered annually are from the adjacent states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Kerala. The Hospital Based Cancer Registry was started at Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology in Medical Records section was part of the registry and reporting of data was limited to the number of cases by site and sex. The Indian Council of Medical Research, as part of expansion activity of National Cancer Registry Programme, included this registry under its network in 1984 and thus has continued to contribute data to NCRP for the past 15 years. 2 Functions of the Department The Faculty of the Department is involved in teaching Biostatistics and Cancer Epidemiological methods to the students of super specialty courses in the institute, Post Graduate and Under Graduates of various disciplines. In addition, the faculty provides statistical consultation to many research projects. The Registry Component of the department collects information on socio-demographic and life style habits from every patient on their registration. Subsequently, the data on clinical aspects such as Diagnosis, clinical extent /stage of the disease, treatment details, disease status at discharge etc. are abstracted from the case sheets on to the core proforma of NCRP. The data so collected is computerized with the software developed by the department to carryout the necessary quality checks. The data analysis is carried out and reports are generated every year, which will help the institute for administrative purposes, academic and research activities and assisting in Cancer Control activities. Based on the observations made from the registry report(s), three case control studies were conducted. The Case Control study on Oesophageal cancer (in collaboration with ICMR) was completed and the results with detailed report was submitted to ICMR. The results on the cast control study of Breast Cancers will be published in the near future. The data collection is in progress for case control study on ovarian cancers.
