11 1 1.0 INTRODUCTION In 1995, a coastal monitoring program was initiated by the Lobster Section of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) in Moncton, New Brunswick (N.B.). The objective of the program is to gather environmental coastal data to better understand fluctuations in water and its effect on coastal marine species. Data will benefit oceanographers and other research scientists interested in water regimes. Water data were collected from coastal waters in N.B., Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) and the Gulf shore of Nova Scotia (N.S.). Data collected before 2010 are available in Lanteigne et al. (1996), Savoie et al. (2002), Savoie and Lanteigne (2002), Savoie and Comeau (2004), Paulin et al. (2005), Paulin and Gagnon (2008), Paulin et al. (2011) and Paulin et al. (2014). Data collected between 2014 and 2015 from the coastal monitoring stations across the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (sgsl) are presented in this report. 2.0 MATERIALS AND METHODS A programmable recorder, the Vemco Minilog-II-T data logger was used for recording the water at all sites during this monitoring program. Each recorder has been initialized to record a water reading every two hours. The and range is -30 to +35ºC with an accuracy of ± 0.1 o C and a resolution of 0.01ºC. From 2014 to 2015, most of the recorders have been deployed by the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) who installed the recorders on some of their navigational buoys in the sgsl. DFO scientific staff and harvesters were also responsible for deploying and retrieving some of the recorders. The recorders launched by CCG were mounted in a steel protective housing unit, as described in Savoie et al. (2002), which is attached to the mooring system of the navigational buoys at approximately one meter from the sea floor. Also, four of the navigational buoys were fitted with recorders measuring the approximately 2 m from the. These sites were: Shippagan N.B., Escuminac N.B., Malpeque P.E.I. and Pleasant Bay N.S.. The recorders launched by harvesters were also set approximately 1 m from the seafloor on independent mooring systems which consisted of an anchor, anchor line and buoy (Dobson and Petrie 1985). Additional recorders were attached to bio-collectors (Wahle et al. 2009) as part of a scientific study and set approximately 0.25 m from the seafloor. The bio-collectors remained untouched and at the same location for the entire soak time period. These sites were in P.E.I. (Alberton, Covehead, Egmont Bay, Fortune, Murray Harbour, Nine Mile Creek and Skinners Pond). Finally, one station consisted of three recorders set at depth of 12m, 18m and 24m deployed by DFO personnel on a shipwreck, the Louise P., located in Anse Bleue, N.B.. For the most part, the deployment of the recorders by the CCG and harvesters was done in early spring (April - May) depending on the ice condition in the sgsl and the retrieval usually took place late fall of the same year (November - December). The recorders for the bio-collectors were deployed late June and retrieved early October and the recorders from the shipwreck near Anse Bleue, N.B. are usually retrieved once a year in July. Once recovered, the recorders were brought to DFO where the data were downloaded, formatted and added to the database. The water depth of the CCG monitoring stations was provided by the CCG while the geographic positions (latitude and longitude) were taken from the Atlantic Coast List of Lights, Buoys and Fog Signals (CCG 2013). DFO personnel or harvesters recorded the latitude and longitude with the depth of water when deploying their respective recorders. Each year, a number of recorders are lost which can be attributed to equipment failure such as shackle, chain or cotter pin breaking off from the mooring system of the navigational buoys (CCG). Some
12 2 of the moorings set by harvesters or DFO personnel also went missing due to environmentally related events or gear failure such as rope or buoy breaking off. A portable reader is used to download and save the data in a excel spreadsheet and all the data were verified for irregularities. Additional information such as serial number, location, coordinates, depth and date are also included in the files. Although the raw data were kept on a separate spread-sheet, only the complete soak days were considered for the analysis. Generally, the set and retrieved dates are considered incomplete and not included in the analysis. The complete soak day files were imported into a Microsoft ACCESS database where sub routines have been created to analyze and tabulate the final results. 3.0 DATA PRESENTATION A general overview of the monitoring station locations are presented in Figures 1 to 4. The positions and water depth for each monitoring station are presented in Tables 1 to 4. The complete data sets are presented in Appendices A to B for 2014 to 2015, respectively. Tabulated results in the appendices for each site includes daily mean s, standard s, daily and s and also daily accumulated degree-days ºC and 4ºC. One yearly graph is presented for each location showing the daily mean s together with the actual water depth of the recorder. Analysis presented in tables and graphs are presented for water and the water (where available). The accumulated degree-days (ADD) were calculated using the following equation: ADD= (T-T ref ) x Time Where T = mean daily T ref = reference (0 C and 4 C) Time = time period in days The equation is true where T < T ref then T T ref = ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The authors would like to thank Sterling Wright and his staff at the Canadian Coast Guard Base in Charlottetown for their support and ongoing help in the deployment and retrieval of the recorders. Also many thanks to all the harvesters who have volunteered their time and material to prepare and deploy some of the moorings. 5.0 REFERENCES Canadian Coast Guard, Marine Programs Lights, buoys and fog signals: Atlantic coast including the Gulf and River St. Lawrence to Montréal.
