Canadian Coast Guard s Role - SAR System in Atlantic Canada MASS15- October 13-15,
Canada and the Global SAR System Following the adoption of the 1979 SAR Convention, the International Maritime Organization s (IMO) Maritime Safety Committee divided the world s oceans into 13 search and rescue areas, in each of which the countries concerned have delimited search and rescue regions for which they are responsible. 2
Vast distances to SAR incidents Whether transiting to the Canadian Arctic or halfway across the Atlantic Ocean to the eastern edge of Halifax s SRR, the immense distances that All are Incidents required to be ( ) covered can mean many hours before an aircraft or vessel can be on scene. ( includes Humanitarian/MedEvac) 3
Search and Rescue in Eastern Canada
Halifax Search & Rescue Region 4.7 million square kilometers 5
CCG Atlantic Operating Environment Harsh remote environment Arctic Ice Sea state conditions can be extremely severe Significant areas not charted to modern standard Portion of Atlantic Region is comprised of shifting sand and mud, (Northern NB and NS, PEI and upper Bay of Fundy) The remaining coastline consists of rocky shoals extending over 30 km out to sea in many cases 6
Atlantic Region Our Reality Year round industries: Marine transportation Fishing Offshore Oil & Gas (exploration, production & shipment) Ferry Aquaculture Seasonal industries: Recreational boating Eco-tourism 7

Missing Hunters Pangnirtung Sept September 1902Z Two hunters are reported overdue to JRCC Halifax. They departed a camp 38 autical miles NW of Pangnirtung in a 22 open boat. They were due back the previous day. Weather reported as winds NE ly at knots, snow coming down the Fjiord, air temperature 4 C, clearer to the west. JRCC tasked multiple resources including Hercules and Cormorant aircraft, CCGS Des Groseilliers, TC 922. Many local hunters also assisting with the search. 23 September 2121z Helicopter from CCGAS Des Groseilliers located the open boat sunk with gear seen spread around the area. Snow in the area but no persons spotted. Local searchers advised of the debris and plan to head out at first light. TC 922 continued search with negative results. Hercules, Cormorant and CG helicopter resume search at day light. Hercules drops radio to small island, establishes communications and confirms that they are the two overdue hunters. 24 September 10:28Z CG helicopter picked up the two hunters and delivered them to the CCGS Des Groseilliers where they were checked over, provided with warm clothing and fed. 24 September 1703Z, CCGS Des Groseilliers landed the two hunter ashore to their families. 16
It was my great pleasure to see the two of them reunited with their families. The most important thing today was seeing one of the men hold his youngest child in his arms. I also expressed my respect for the village's exceptional solidarity. CAPTAIN MICHEL DUFRESNE CCGS Des Groseilliers 17
