What an exciting time it s been in the world of figure skating! Coming off of an incredible National championship, our U.S. Olympic team has already had some glowing moments in Vancouver. If you were like me, it was worth staying up to see Evan Lysacek win gold. As skating parents, we watch these Olympians, considering with appreciation the incredible amount of training and support that goes into these athletes. As the competition season begins again, our skaters are thinking about their skating goals for These goals will look different for every skater. We can go a long way in supporting our skaters and coaches by encouraging our children to set appropriate goals and helping them develop a plan to reach them. Yes, skating is an investment. But there is no way to measure the wonderful life lessons and character development that our children are gleaning every day on the ice. All of this makes me very proud to be part of our local skating community. Go Team USA! Go Greenville FSC! After the disaster in Haiti, there has been some talk at the rink to organize a benefit skating show that could raise money for a charity involved with relief after the earthquake. Ted and the Pavilion have presented us with a wonderful ice time to have the show and we are ready to move forward with preparations for this opportunity. The show will be held Saturday, March 20 th from 5-7 pm followed by a public skating session. This is an ideal time and it will be great to have the skaters able to skate with the audience after the show. Details will be communicated through as they become available, but there will definitely be two group skating numbers that will be organized during the regular stroking class times on Monday and Thursday. If you would like to help with the organization of this event, please join us this Tuesday, February 23rd for a meeting at 6:15 pm. We need lots of parents to help with planning, publicity, ticket sales, etc. What a busy few months!! See page 4 and 5 for pictures from all of the National Skating Month Events!

7 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 5 Page 7 B R E A K T H E I C E : A P R I L 3 0 A N D M A Y 1, Our basic skills competition will be returning again this upcoming year and we are in need of some volunteers. For everyone who is new to this sport, our basic skills competition last year was a fun and exciting experience for all. It is fun for the skaters to be able to compete at their own home rink and have the opportunity to bring in skaters from other rinks to Greenville. The following is a list of sub committees that need help with volunteers; the name next to the committee would be the person you would want to if you would like to help out with their committee. Here is the list of committees and the contact info: Accounting/Judges Music Ice Monitors/Runners Announcing Awards Promotion/Publicity Programs Vendors/Gifts Bags Registration Table Hospitality Contact person: Lauren Hunt (jghuntjr@bellsouth.net) Stacey Hawks (sgt_stacey@yahoo.com) Contact person: Michelle Wise (mwise@gcrd.org) Contact person: Cindy Pitmon (cpitmon@aol.com) Contact person: Jimmy Crocket (jimmy@gcrd.org) Contact person: Kim Cowgill (kcowgill@us.ibm.com) Contact Person: Cheryl Doyle (doylefamily141@att.net) Contact person: Darilyn Seppala (darilynsep@aol.com) Contact person: Corinne Dyer (cqdyer@aol.com) Julia Nance (heather.nance@familyplace.com) Contact person: Charis Sloan (cbynum@gcrd.org) Thank you so much to everyone who is helping to make this event a success and fun experience for all of the skaters. If anyone has any question in regards to the competition please feel free to Kristen Martin at mkristen29@yahoo.com. F R E E S T Y L E S E S S I O N D O S A N D D O N T S When a skater joins the Greenville FSC as a Bridge Member, he or she is then eligible for practice and lesson time on our freestyle sessions. This can be an exciting, yet anxious time for skaters, Coach Charis Sloan said. It is important that skaters fully understand the rules so that they do not endanger themselves or others. A list of these guidelines can be found on the Greenville FSC website, but common courtesy is the best rule of thumb. This begins with mutual respect for coaches and skaters. Skaters in a lesson have first right of way, and other skaters need to yield the ice to accommodate them. Skaters doing their program have the second right of way and should always have the orange belt on so others on the ice can easily spot them. When a skater is on the ice wearing the orange belt, other skaters should be courteous and allow her room to do her program. Back spirals can be a safety hazard and are not allowed without a coach s assistance when there are six or more skaters on the ice, Coach Sloan said. Higher level skaters have the responsibility to skate with caution when lower level skaters are present. All skaters should be respectful of those who are practicing jumps in the far corners of the rink or Lutz corners. We want our new skaters to be confident on freestyle sessions, said Coach Sloan. The best way to do this is to be aware of the rules and respectful of your fellow skaters. Parents can also help by reminding skaters to be courteous. Looking for a full list of the Freestyle Ice Guidelines? Try the Greenville FSC Website, for this and many other fun and informative features! Have you made anything creative relating to skating? A poem or drawing. Send them to kim@thekiddergroup.com and we will try to use them if we have space.
