INTRODUCTION durango background The Town Durango is located in the southwestern region of Colorado in the La Plata County and was primarily founded to serve the San Juan mining district. Due to high success rates of mining silver and gold in the mountains, this resulted in settlement of mining towns such as Silverton, 50 miles north of Durango. In 1880, The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Company invested in the land of Durango for its abundant supply of water and coal for operating the smelters to mine these valuable metals. Demographics Durango, Colorado Historical Mining District 2016 Population: 18,035 After a few decades of success in the mining industry, Durango became home for thousands of workers and a vacation destination for people all over the country. With the creation of the San Juan National Forest in 1905 and the Mesa Verde National Park in 1906, Durango became a recreational haven for nature enthusiasts, athletes, and thrill seekers. The River Animas River - El Río de las animas (River of souls) This river currently passes through 12 public parks, through downtown Durango and serves as a valuable amenity for residents and visitors of Durango. The proximity of the river to Downtown Durango greatly contributes to the culture and character of the town. It boasts gold medal fly fishing waters, and is popular for whitewater rafting, kayaking, canoing and many more river activities. 8 Animas River Recreation Village
Historic Train District The Animas River Recreation Village in Durango will generate various opportunities for the use of natural elements to protect the river s most prominent features. The vision offers a broad range of recreational activities, public greenways, and a multi-modal transportation network that will allow visitors and the residents of Durango to directly connect to the Animas River. This vision also provides a comprehensive mix of amenities, facilities, and a variety of park types that directly connect to the Animas River Trail. Animas River Recreation Village 9

PROJECT VISION The Animas River Recreation Village in Durango will generate various opportunities with the use of natural elements to protect the river s most prominent features. While this vision primarily focuses on a recreational standpoint along the Animas River, these improvements will establish fundamental principles that are ecologically sensitive, naturally creating improvements for local habitats. It also establishes basic principles that will serve as a catalyst for future investments and new development in surrounding communities along the river. The project vision + intent within the Animas River Recreation Village Plan evolve from comparing and analyzing several community elements including: the cultural and demographic makeup of Durango residents, future land use, recreation and program inventory, and future growth areas. The goals of this project primarily focus within these three areas: Trail Network, River Access, and Parks + Recreation Animas River Recreation Village 11
INTRODUCTION Location map DURANGO, COLORADO Animas River Recreation Village 12 Animas River Recreation Village
INTRODUCTION the site Durango, Colorado The project planning area includes an approximate mile wide corridor along the 8-mile stretch of the Animas River within the city limits of Durango. This planning process will include a comprehensive mix of amenities and recreational programs that utilizes the existing infrastructure of the Animas River Trail (ART) The Animas River Trail The Animas River Trail is a recreational trail as well as an important component of the city s transportation network. The ART is used extensively by Durango residents and visitors and is consistently rated as one of Durango s top amenities. It is approximately 6.5 miles in length and is a hard surface shared-use path that serves as the center spine of Durango s overall circulation network. It currently connects to a variety of existing amenities along the river such as the community center, the public library, and city parks. Animas River Recreation Village 13
INTRODUCTION MAJOR ISSUES 1) Limited Public Access - River Access - Trail Connectivity - Park Connectivity 2) Lacking Facilities/ Amenities for Recreational Activities - Limited Corridor and Trail System - Limited public park space - Linkage between existing public parks & green spaces 3) Lacking a Cohesive Circulation Network -Weak connection between the Animas River Trail and public natural trails -Lacking multi-use trails or shared lanes within the downtown area -Limited connection to downtown Durango The Situation Due to the growing population in Durango, the main amenities in Durango are becoming over populated and congested. Conflicts between recreational activities become visible and complaints from residents are being made more frequently. As a result, several areas along the river are considered hazardous and reduce the quality of the recreational experience. The purpose of this project, Animas River Recreation Village, aims to recognize the river as a valuable amenity and explore the ways that public space can contribute to the recreational aspect of the river. As a landscape architect, I will provide various opportunities for multi-use trails, recreational activities, and easy access to the river to contribute to a healthy living and quality experiences interacting with the river while preserving the culture and history of Durango. 14 Animas River Recreation Village
INTRODUCTION GOALS & OBJECTIVES Improve Public Access to the Animas River +Improve existing and develop new access points that provide a park-like setting with various amenities. +Creating formalized access points within the corridor to reduce congestion and promote safety. Provide Quality Multi-Use Recreational Facilities +Identifying lacking facilities and location of proposed facilities. +Establish several destination areas with amenities. +Providing in-stream and shore-line recreation Increase Multi-Modal Relationships +Enhance connectivity of parks and open space through the trail system. +Integrating the natural surface trails with the paved surface trails +Create an interconnected, safe transportation network that directly relates to the Animas River Trail and existing parks and trails SUMMARY The 3 areas I will focus primarily on are as follows: Circulation Network: Provide connections between existing and proposed transportation that create a fully-connected transportation network. River Access Points: Connecting people to the river Parks & Recreation: Provide destinations between existing and proposed multi-functional parks for community gatherings and activities Animas River Recreation Village 15

Site synthesis Analyzing the site for recreational purposes brought up 2 important factors that influence the design approach for this project: land use and access to the river. Land use is important because it is critical to look for opportunities and constraints within the land use for certain recreational activities. Synthesizing the access to the river is also very important for design guidelines for recreational activities. Animas River Recreation Village 41
