2 Francis Lee born about 1667, of Parish of Ellesmere, Shropshire, England The purpose of this study is to record all data known by this writer about Francis Lea, wife Ann, of Louisa Co., VA, who died in 1766 leaving a will naming his wife and children, and to present strong circumstantial evidence concerning his probable father, Francis Lee of Ellesmere, Shropshire England. As will be seen in the pages following, Jack and Marion Kaminkow in 1966 published a list 1 of immigrants showing one Francis Lea, aged 23, who indentured himself Nov. 19, 1725, by his signature, for five years to pay his passage to Virginia. This record quoted by the Kaminkows indicates Francis Lea was from the parish of Elsmore in the county of Salop England. Since there is no parish with this spelling, the record further indicates the correct spelling of the parish was probably (Ellesmere?) in Shropshire. Francis Lea of Louisa County, in his will, indicated two of his sons were Wainright and John. This would have no particular significance were it not for the fact that one Francis Lee, born about 1667 and wife, name unknown, born about 1671 of Ellesmere, Shropshire, England had children as follows: Wainwright Lee, christened 1693 Ellesmere, Shropshire, England; Mary Lee, christened 13 July 1696, Ellesmere, Shropshire; Priscilla Lee, christened 26 November 1699, Ellesmere, Shropshire; Francis Lee, christened 07 July 1702, Ellesmere, Shropshire; and John Lee, christened 19 September 1708, Ellesmere, Shropshire. The only probable early record of Francis Lea in Virginia is found in A List of Emigrants from England to America , by Jack and Marion Kaminkow, Magna Charta Book Company, Baltimore, Md. 1966; page 138 as follows: a (persons listed are each assigned a number) b. (whether signed or marked) j. 19 Nov (Date of indenture) k. 187 (Page number) There is currently only circumstancial evidence that Francis Lea of Louisa County, VA, who died in 1766 is the Francis Lea who signed the above indenture on Nov. 19, 1725; however, because of the age, destination, and other reasons shown herein, it is very probable that they are the same. The Lea, Lee, Leigh, etc. family has been in Shrophsire, England for possibly six centuries. In The Lea Family of Virginia and North Carolina and The Slade Family of Caswell County, North Carolina, by Elizabeth W. Dixon; Book #46290 of the D. A. R. Library Collection; pages 36 and 64: "Amite County, Mississippi Historical Records 1957": "Francis Lea, born c1726 (sic.), died 1766 in Louisa County, Va."; the origin shown for Francis Lea is in all probability in error and should be corrected. Francis Lea, of Saint Davids Parish, King William County, VA, on Nov. 26, 1751 purchased land on Duckinhole Creek in Fredericksville Parish, Louisa County, VA, (Louisa County VA, Deed Book A, page 447). Unfortunately, the King William County, VA, Courthouse burned in 1781 with all records being destroyed and for this reason Francis Lea cannot be traced in this county. Ann Lea, wife of Francis Lea, left a will dated Sept. 15, 1780 and recorded May 12, 1783 (Louisa County, VA, Will Book 2, page 469). The will of Francis Lea, recorded in Louisa County, VA, Will Book 1, pages 82 and 83 follows: "In the name of God - Amen the twenty sixth Day of April 1765 I Francis Lea of the County of Louisa and Parish of Fredericksville being very Sick and weak in Body but of perfect mind & memory thanks be given unto God Therefore Calling unto mind the Mortality of my Body and knowing that it was appointed for all men once to die, Do 3 Apparently, Salop should read Shrop for Shropshire. 4

6 make and ordaine this My last will and Testament that is to say principally & first of all I give & recommend my Soul into hands of Almighty God that gave it and my Body I recommend to the Earth to be buried indecent Christian Burial at the Discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the general Resurrection Shall receive the same By the mighty Power of God and his Son Jesus Christ. And as touching Such worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this Life I give demise and dispose of the same in the following Manner and Form Imprimis it is my will that all my Just Debts be fully satisfied and paid Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mary Tate & Robert Tate her Husband one Negro Boy Named Ned and a Negro Girl named Hannah which said Negroes and their Increase after the Death of Said Mary & Robert Tate, is to be divided Equally between the Heirs of their Bodies lawfully begotten Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Eleanor Vaun Relict of Martin Vaun one Negro Boy named Moses and one Negro Girl named Judy during her Life and after her Decease to the Heirs of her Body lawfully begotten by the said Martin Vaun. Item is my will and Desire that after the Death of my said wife my Estate Not already mentioned to be equally divided amongst Children John, Wainright, Gedion, Ann and Susannah, or as many of them as shall be then living. Item it is my will and Desire that if any of my Sons should died without Heir or before they should arive to the age of twenty one years then their Parts should be equally divided among my Surviving Sons. Item my Will & Desire is that if either of last mentioned Daughters Should die without Heir or before they Arive to the Age of twenty one Years then their Survivor Should possess her part. Item it is my Will and that my Negro Girl Sal who is a Natural Fool be maintained at the expense of my last mentioned children John, Wainright, Gedion, Ann and Susannah. Item I do further by this my last will and Testament Constitute appoint and ordain my beloved Wife Ann Lea and my Friend Thomas White of Spotsyvania County to be Executors of this my last Will and Testament. Item it is my Will & Desire that my Estate shall not be appraised nor sold and I do hereby utterly Disallow revoke and disannul all and every other former Testements wills Legacies Bequests by me in any Ways before named. The last settlement of his estate in 1815 names his wife Rachel but does not name the children. These grants presumably were all made to the same individual even though the spelling of the surname varies. In the first "census" of Kentucky in 1790, Francis W. Lea was a taxpayer in Fayette County under date of July 2, In the second "census" of Kentucky Francis W. Lay is shown as a taxpayer of Woodford County in 1800 and Francis Lea is shown as a taxpayer of Madison County, Aug. 12, They are the same person. These "censuses" of 1790 and 1800 were taken from the old tax lists. Francis Wainright Lea and his wife Mary "Polly" Sanders first settled in 1780 or 1781 at 7

9 Bryan's Station about five miles northeast of Lexington (now) in what was later Fayette County. Lexington became a permanent settlement in 1779 and the same year Bryan's Station was settled by four brothers, one of whom named William married a sister of Daniel Boone. Anyone who is interested in the family of Francis Wainright Lea should read Bryan Station Heroes and Heroines, by Virginia Webb Howard (Mrs. Pathan B. Howard), Francis Wainright Lea's name is listed on the monument as one of those who fought at the "Battle of the Blue Licks", Aug. 19, Judge Thomas Riley Shouse in his manuscript on The Shouse Family, dated July 15, 1928 stated that Mary "Polly" (Lea) Shouse, born Jan. 11, 1787, died March 6, 1856 was a cousin of Meriwether Lewis (born Locust Hill, near Charlottesville, VA, Aug. 18, 1774; committed suicide near Nashville, Tenn., Oct. 11 or Oct ), of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This compiler cannot find the basis for this assertion; however, there may be some connection with a Lewis family since one of the brothers of Mary "Polly" (Lea) Shouse was named Lewis Lea. Daniel Shouse and wife Mary "Polly" Lea named their first son Francis Henry in honor of the boy's grandfathers and they named another son Daniel Lewis probably for the boy's father and Uncle Lewis Lea. Ann, the wife of Francis Lea (father of Francis Wainright Lea) may have been a Lewis though this has not been confirmed. According to Mr. William S. Foley, Sr., the children of Wainright Lea in 1821 lived as follows: Cathy Jones in Bath County; Milley Leary or Scearcy in Owen County; Nancy Carpenter in Shelby County; John Lea in Scott County; Lewis Lea in Mason County; Rosetta Long in Mason County and Elijah Lea in Fayette County. In 1835 Elijah lived in Franklin County and died in Shelby County. Filson Club Publication number Twelve: Bryant's Station, prepared for publication by Reuben T. Durrett, LLD, states on page 48: "Wainright Lea and his wife, Fanny (Sanders) Lea." This is in error and should read "his wife Mary "Polly" Sanders Lea." Katherine Carpenter Sweeney great-grand daughter of Francis Wainright Lea stated his wife's name was Mary "Polly" Sanders Lea. Bible and Fayette County, Ky., Court records all refer to Francis W. Lea and his wife Mary or Polly. 11. Gedion or Gideon Lea; is said by Deana Steel at <rdsteel@lds.net> to have married Sally Anne Caffery and had a son Gedion Lea, Jr. who married June 11, 1801, Phoebe Fares/Fariss 13. Susanna or Susannah Lea; married Jonathan Carpenter, II, of Spotsylvania County, VA Children, all born in Spotsylvania County, VA: 26. Rhoda; born May 11, 1770; died Woodford County, Ky., Nov. 18, 1812; married in Virginia in 1791, Thomas DuVal (born King and Queen County, VA, July 30, 1768; first marriage); eight children first three of whom were born in Virginia and the last five were born in Kentucky. 27. John; born March 20, 1772; died Henry County, Ky., July 12, 1849; married first, in Caroline County, VA, July 18, 1795, Polly DuVal (born 1773; died Woodford 8

John Carpenter married second, Woodford County, Ky., Oct. 15, 1810, Fanny Norwood (born Jan. 25, 1786; died Henry Co., Ky., May 26, 1842); nine children. 28. Zacheus; Christian Church Minister; born Jan. 20, 1774; died Shelby County, Ky., Jan. 3, 1863; married Dec. 21, 1800, Nancy Lea daughter of Francis Wainright Lea and Mary Fanny (Saunders) Lea, his first cousin (his mother and her father were sister and brother) seven children. 29. Jesse; born 1779; died Shelby County, Ky., 1857; married Woodford County, Ky., Nov. 26, 1803, Susannah Edwards (born 1778); his will mentions three daughters. 30. Nancy; married 1802, Edmond Edwards. 31. Jonathan, III, lawyer; married Woodford County, KY, Dec. 17, 1807, Nancy Shouse (daughter of Henry Shouse); living in Liberty, Clay County, Mo., Francis; died in Kentucky, in 1806; unmarried. Fourth Generation 20. Nancy Lea; born May 29, 1773; died Oct. 12, 1854; married Dec. 21, 1800, Zacheus Carpenter (No. 28,), her first cousin. Children: 33. Edwin Lea; born Aril 11, 1829; died From Bible and Shouse family records it was known that the wife of Daniel Shouse (born March 29, 1786; died Nov. 20, 1866) was Mary Lea, the daughter of Francis Wainright Lea (1741; will dated Feb. 8, 1815) and his wife Mary ( ) of Bryan's Station in Kentucky. From Bryan Station Heroes and Heroines by Virginia Webb Howard, (Mrs. Pathan B. Howard), 1932, we find that Mary, wife of Francis Wainright Lea was a Saunders before her marriage. In Mrs. Howards book all the pioneers at Bryan's Station are named, among whom were the numerous Craig families from Spotsylvania County, VA This compiler came across the identity of Mary (Saunders) Lea in a genealogy of the Craigs titled, Descendants of Jane Taliaferro Craig, Edited by Harry LaVird Craig, 11 Collingwood Circle, Twin Falls, Idaho, May 20, This genealogy shows Mary Lee named as a daughter of Hugh Sanders of Spotsyvania County, VA The Craigs and Saunders (Sanders) who intermarried were from Spotsylvania County VA, and the Leas were from adjoining Louisa County, VA. ********** 232 Montgomery Avenue Versailles, Ky November 20, 1967 Eugene E. What is your connection with this line? I have a great deal of data about descendants of Wainright, if I knew what you were particularly interested in, and will be happy to share with you. J. R. Carpenter must be a descendant of Nancy Lea and Zacheus Carpenter! The following are random notes that might be of interest: Jane Craig Saunders, wife of John Saunders daughters Polly, Betsy, Lydia. John Saunders entered land on Elkhorn Creek. John could very likely be a brother of Mary Frances Saunders Lea as the Craigs, Leas and Saunders all lived in the same area when they first came to Ky. 10

History of Woodford County, by Railey, pages 224: During the year 1784, or about that time Henry Shouse a gentleman of German extraction, who first settled in Pennsylvania, came to Woodford County and located on a splendid farm near Mortonsville that is still in possession of descendants. He was twice married, but the name of his first wife is not known. His second wife was Elizabeth Jones, of Bath County. One child resulted from the first marriage, but quite a number was the result of the second marriage, all growing up under the guidance of Elizabeth Jones. The names of the children follow: - Samuel, born 1784, married Catherine Perry who was born in 1789; Daniel, born 1786, died in 1866, married Mary Lea in 1807, she born of Welsh parents in 1787, daughter of Frances W. Lea and his wife Mary, who were with the colony at Bryan Station, and pioneers of Woodford County; Thomas, born in Woodford County where he died about 1821, he married Mary McQuiddy and moved to Terre Haute Indiana about 1810; William who married first Lucretia Smith, second Betti Wells; and Permelia, who married Samuel Jesse of Shelvy County. Daniel and Mary Lea, had Francis Henry, who married Mary Conn and moved to Union County about 1844; Jeptha, who married first Jane Dale, daughter of John Dale, a Baptist Minister, second Hattie Ragland; William O., who married Harriet Bryant, a daughter of Joseph Bryant, of Shelby County and they moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1836; Newton, who married Mary Dehorney and moved to Louisiana after the Civil War; Benjamin H., married Vassie Dale, a widow, and moved to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1855, where he engaged in the banking business until his death in In 1821, Wainright Lea s children lived as follows: Cathy Jones in Bath County; Milley Leary (or Scearcy?) In Owen County; Nancy Carpenter in Shelby County; John Lea in Scott County; Lewis Lea in Mason county; Rosetta Long in Mason County; and Elijah Lea of Fayette County. Elijah lived in Franklin County in 1835 and died in Shelby County. A son of Wainright and Mary Saunders Lea, Hugh Huky Lea was killed by a Indian outside the fort at Bryan Station on a Sunday morn as he grazed his horse in preparation for a return trip to Virginia, in the spring of Sincerely, William S. Mary (Saunders) Lea, wife of Francis Wainright Lea, was the daughter of Hugh Sanders (Saunders) and his wife Catherine. Hugh Sanders (Saunders) died in Spotsylvania County, Va., in 1781 (Will Book E, page 418) and names in his will: wife Catherine, son Nathaniel, son Robert, son Charles, daughter Catherine, daughter Rosey Sanders, daughter Abigail, son John, daughter Elizabeth,, daughter Sarah Gatewood, daughter Mildred Jones, daughter Mary Lee and daughter Ann Tally.
