Casting classes can improve your chances of catching fish Fly fishing in saltwater can be a frustrating business if you can't get the fly in front of the fish and the BFF Casting Instruction Team is here to help. Classes are held every month and cover all the topics necessary for fly fishing here in Southwest Florida. Below are some scenes from a recent Casting Day event at Pelican Bay Park in Naples. See the "Upcoming Casting Classes" item that follows for more specifics.

3 Fishing Prospects for February Water temperature and water clarity will be the keys to the fishing in February. Sunny afternoons that warm the water will help. As the month progresses and temperatures warm up the fishing should improve. Keep an eye on storm fronts. Fishing is usually better right before a front moves through. As the front passes through stirring up the water and reducing the water clarity the result will be poorer fishing for several days. For the latest information on license requirements, open seasons, sizes and possession limits check the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission website for at SNOOK In our area (Everglades National Park, Gulf of Mexico, and Monroe County) the snook season is closed, until March 1. Catch and release of snook is permitted so minimize the handling of any snook caught and return them to the water as quickly as possible. Warmer days will help the snook fishing as the snook will move to avoid cold water. Snook will be found in protected locations where the water is relatively warmer. Explore further into the backcountry, up rivers and creeks. Structures worth checking include deep holes near oyster bars and docks. REDFISH The reds may be found in the holes around the oyster bars. In the afternoon if the sun warms the water enough the reds will move into the shallow grassy areas. TROUT With the continuing cooler weather trout may well be the fish of the month. During the top half of the tide expect trout to be over the grass beds. During the lower half of the tide check the holes in the back bays. POMPANO & others The cold weather and cooler water temperature should result in improved pompano fishing. Look for pompano in the passes and over the grass beds. Try working a shrimp or small crab pattern right on the bottom. Sheepshead will be found in holes in the backcountry, around structure such as docks and oyster bars, and near the passes. Jacks and ladyfish should also be around despite the cold. Page 3 m Member Announcements Loomis NRX 9 4Pc 5Wt for sale. I purchased this rod new and have rarely used it. 4 Page 4 m and killifish (mud minnows). Casting imitation flies of their prey will catch the attention of these powerful estuarine musicians. Redfish are prodigious spawners that produce tens of millions of eggs. Spawning season is from about August through December, in passes, inlets and lagoon estuaries around the state. During spawning season, redfish use special muscles rubbing against their air bladder to produce a "drumming" sound for which they are named. Know Your Target Species Red Drum: Sciaenops ocellatus Appearance: Chin without barbels Copper-bronze body; lighter in clear waters 1 to many spots at the base of the tail Mouth horizontal and opens downward Large scales Habitat: In winter, redfish are found in seagrass, over muddy or sand bottoms, or near oyster bars or spring fed creeks. Behavior: Juvenile redfish are an inshore species until they reach roughly 30 inches (4 years). They then migrate to the nearshore population. Additional Information State Record: 52 lb 5 oz, caught near Cocoa (1996) Fishing Tips and Facts: Red drum are one of Florida s most popular sport fish and the state s most widespread estuarine fish. Shrimp, crab and baitfish flies are a good way to fly fish for redfish. They also chase crabs, mullet, pinfish Check out the BFF Channel: UCRqeR15zYAhhQ59ZnhZ_PuA Follow BFF@backcountryfly What Are You Throwing?
