1 The BUFFER The Newsletter of Buckeye United Fly Fishers, Inc., Cincinnati, OH Volume 31, Issue 2 Web site: February 2007 The President s Notes Lou Haynes (bdhaynes@one.net) Finally, some cold weather has arrived. Now maybe the bait fish will gather in the warm water discharge at the power plant near Aberdeen on the Ohio River, and fishing will pick-up there. Hope so! The general membership will vote for our Fly Fisher of the Year at the February meeting. Nominations close February 10. Nominees, to date, are Roger Corrado, Jim Hampton, Bob Mackey, Ken West, Dave French, Jon Kennard and Dave Jones. The winner/s will be announced at the March banquet. Don t miss our Greater Cincinnati Fly Fishing Show on Saturday, February 10 th. If you are not a show volunteer that day, please come and support the club as an attendee it s only $5 unless you re 12 or younger. The club banquet is coming up fast March 3 rd. Space is limited to about 200 attendees, so get your reservations in soon! The banquet committee can still use some more raffle items. Please help the club with a gift or two if you haven t already donated an item. You may bring donations to the February meeting or call Bob Miller or Jim Boude, our banquet coordinators, who will make arrangements to get them. Fly Fishing 101 Course The Fly Fishing 101 Course will be held in March at the Springdale Community Center located at Lawnview Avenue in Springdale (behind the Outback Restaurant near Rt. 4 and I-275). The classes will be held on the four Tuesday evenings in March (6, 13, 20 and 27) and will run from 7 PM to 9 PM. This program is open to BUFF members only ; there is no fee to attend. The course material will cover rods, reels, backing, lines, leaders, tippets, recommended flies to get you started, knots, how to select a fly rod system to meet your fishing needs, other equipment needs and casting basics. This program is designed for beginners and intermediate-skilled fishers. Pre-registration is not required; come at the last minute if you can. However, I do need to get an approximate attendance number for class handouts so I ll have a sign-up sheet at the February meeting. Call or me ( ; bdhaynes@one.net) if you will not be at the meeting but plan to attend the course. February Meeting Program Christopher Long Fishing Pro, Pine Lake Trout Club Chris has been the head Fishing Pro at Pine Lake Trout Club near Bainbridge, Ohio for the last 8 years. He also manages the fly shop and the stocking program as well as special events at Pine Lake. In addition to teaching tying and casting, Chris is a Steelhead guide on Lake Erie and its tributaries. This will be a particularly valuable presentation for those planning to attend the BUFF Steelhead Trip March 31- April 1 since Pine Lake Trout Club will be our base of operations. 2 Mad River Habitat Improvement Tom Allen -- Representing Madmen Chapter of TU, COFF, MVFF, BUFF and NKFF for Mad River Watershed Projects The in-stream/riparian habitat improvement work on Mad River for 2007 will beginning Saturday March 3, 2007 and continue every other Saturday until the end of October. There may be some special workdays between now and then in preparation but that will be the first formal day. We can always use more volunteers, so for time and location of workdays in 2007, check the calendar at: The grant funds to continue the work will be available until July 1, 2009, so we should be able to get many more miles of stream habitat improved. If you are not able to make the workdays, but want to contribute, please sign up for the ADOPT-A-BRIDGE/STREAMWATCH program and help control litter, clear paths and parking areas, and keep an eye on things whenever you go to fish the river. Because of the increase in litter, vandalism, trespassing and property destruction, we need everyone's help, and contact the Sheriff and Jeff Tipton, the Game Warden, if something looks suspicious. We want to keep a positive relationship with landowners and the community, in order to continue to enjoy this valuable fishery and resource. If you have any questions or want to volunteer contact Tom Allen at or ptallen111@insight.rr.com Nantahala River North Carolina Trout Magic Spring Trip 2007 Randy Clark Mark your calendars and make plans now for April 27-29, 2007 (Friday Sunday). This has been one of the more popular BUFF trips and this trip, if anything like previous ones, will again be great. It will be Magic. The river is beautiful; it has been said to be the perfect trout stream. The cold clear water has riffles, runs, rapids and pockets. The scenery this time of year will be absolutely breathtaking. The town of Bryson City has a special charm and the people of this area are the friendliest you will ever find. And you are almost guaranteed to catch trout. This will be a great trip for experienced fly fishers and perfect for beginners. Last year more than 35 people attended. Sign-up begins at the February BUFF meeting - Information packets will be given to all who sign-up. Check out our web site to preview the information packet. Trip Coordinators: Randy Clark, & Jeff In Search of the Bronze Back 2007 Don Hogue The 2007 Smallmouth Bass trip will be held May 17,18,19 and20, It will be a camping outing at the Elkhorn Campground in the confluence of the North & South Forks of the Elkhorn Creek. There are limited public access areas which are noted on maps enclosed in your packet, but enough so that private lands need not be trespassed. You may join the trip for any portion of the four day trek. Should you not have a tent or camper, a motel is close by; ( ). You must call the campground by May 1, 2007, and make your reservation. Be sure to tell them you are with BUFF. (ELKHORN CAMP GROUND ) After May 1, you takes your chances! You must also get a registration form from Don Hogue. He will make you a name tag and get a packet to you. Home Telephone: Along side of the campground is an excellent pool for canoe, one man pontoon boat or belly boat fishing. Sites on both North and South Forks offer beautiful spots for fishing. The fish hatchery is one of my favorite sites because of the easy negotiation of the creek bank, and you can drive right up to the bank. However, the gates open at 8:00 am & close at 4:00 pm (Locked-Up!) It is a beautiful habitat for bronze backs. A breakfast will be available on Saturday morning at 7:30 am, for $2.00, as well as a supper on Saturday at 7:00 p.m., for $8.00. Please pay Don at the camp ground -- meals by reservation only! What flies to use? Don Hogue says bumblebee popper, and red fox squirrel nymph with legs. Others say brown wooly bugger. Fish next to weeds, wood, in and below riffles, and next to ledges in the shade. See you there!! The BUFFER 2
3 Cabin Fever Relief Banquet 2007 March 3, 2007 It will be just a few short weeks until we have the chance to gather for our annual Banquet! The February meeting is the last meeting where we will be selling tickets. You can also obtain the registration form from our web site. If necessary we can even mail you a form just give us a call! As with last year, we will be limiting the number to 200 attendees and we are well on our way having a full house so be sure to get your reservation made as soon as possible. The 2007 Cabin Fever Relief Banquet will be held on Saturday, March 3rd at Receptions Conference Center in Fairfield. (See directions on web site.) The annual banquet is our organization s largest fund raising event of the year. This event funds the outreach, conservation, and educational programs we conduct throughout the year. We will once again have Professional Auctioneer, Russel Arey to help us with our live auction and provide some of the best entertainment around. In addition, we will again have silent auction tables, the Early Bird Raffle, the Children s Raffle, Grand Prize Raffle Tables, and the always popular General Raffle Tables. You can look forward to great entertainment and an outstanding selection of prizes this year. We have received over 10 donations of trips from professional guides as well as several trip and casting instruction donations from our more skilled members! We have also received item donations from numerous manufacturers, and local fly shops. Check the website as we add photos and descriptions of items that will be available! PRIZE RECRUITMENT: As you know, we urgently need the help and support of all BUFF members to produce an enjoyable and successful banquet. Profits from the banquet fund our organizations activities throughout the upcoming year. We are asking all BUFF members to donate a raffle/action item or make a cash donation for the banquet this year. We are in particular need of items that can be used for our General Raffle and Grand Raffle Tables. You may bring your donations to the general meetings and give them to Bob Miller, Jim Boude, or George Fraley. As your gifts are charitable donations be sure to get a receipt and keep it to deduct on your taxes. The cost of the Banquet remains unchanged from last $30/person. Children 16 and under are still only $15. If you are interested in helping with the banquet this year please contact Bob Miller ( ) or Jim Boude ( ) Banquet Co-Chairs for this years event. Also, feel free to share any ideas for unique raffle and auction items! 4 FISHING WITH WATERMELON AND JACK DANIELS Steve Lilly For a great fishing technique try this. When you meet a landowner who will let you fish a particularly nice stretch of water, show your appreciation and present them with something. I seldom go fishing without a pint of Jack Daniels, or I will stop at the grocery and get a watermelon and give one, or the other, to a landowner. The big fuss with access to the Steelhead streams in Northern Ohio is about too many fishermen. There are always those belligerent and messy few, and the more fishermen there are, the more bad guys there are, and the greater the problem. I can t fault the landowners. Among the solutions being considered to remedy the problem are: Obtain easements for public access Purchase the land outright and make it public Amend the current trespass law by legislative action Amend the Ohio Constitution The one I liked best -- buy up the cheap land above the Harpersfield dam, where the steelhead can t migrate, then dynamite the dam In our area, there aren t many people on the streams. But, that only means that our problem isn t as great as it is up North. The best solution doesn t take a lot of money, or require any legislative action, or dynamite. All it takes is a firm commitment from the fishing community; especially we fly fishermen, to respect a fundamental principle of our Republic regarding private property. Ask permission!!. Most landowners will let you come on their land. They figure if you care enough to ask, then you won t abuse the privilege. If you get caught fishing on someone s land without their permission, be contrite, apologize, and show a little humility. Let the owner sound off and berate you or whatever. When they quiet down, try to convince them that you are on their side, and you care as much for the land as they do. It works, I have had success getting their okay to continue fishing. I don t think any of us litter, but how many times have we waded by someone else s mess and acted like we didn t notice anything. In the hierarchy of sins, the one who made the mess may be at the top, but those who don t pick it up are only one notch below. After all, when an owner finds litter on his land he doesn t care who put it there. His response is to go to Tractor Supply and buy a handful of posting signs. If you really want to be able to continue fishing in our streams, then give some thought to fishing with watermelon and a pint of Mister Jack!! BUFF AUCTION TRIP -- ALASKA 2007 Bob Mackey Once again Doyle Hatfield of Saltery Lake Lodge has donated a two-for-one trip to his remote Alaskan lodge on Kodiak Island. This reminder is to make you aware that now is the time to be thinking seriously if this would be the trip for you. Last year Bruce James and I went through the series of early interests to the maybe phase to the sounds great phase to the can we afford phase to the yes, let s do it. This year s trip is August 26 through September 1 st. This 6 day/6 night fishing package includes round trip bush plane transportation from Kodiak, to and from the lodge, food, lodging and fishing guides. This is a $ value.you and your buddy split the $ and you wind up spending $ each for the fishing package. Get on the internet early and find a good deal on a flight or use some frequent flyer miles to help out. We had Delta direct flights from Cincy to Anchorage and back. Alaskan Airlines took us to and from Kodiak. See the September 2006 BUFFER for my article about our trip. The BUFFER 4
