1 Prestige Philately - Auction No 168 Page: 1 NEW SOUTH WALES Sydney Views At the turn of the 20th Century, "Sydney Views" were considered one of the most important Classic issues of the world. Many serious philatelists included Australia's first stamps in their collections. We are glad to see that, after many years in the doldrums, interest in these primitive but delightful stamps is on the rise. The selection offered in this auction - including Hugh Freeman's extraordinary collection of Barred Numeral cancellations on "Sydney Views" - Lots 117 to is the finest and most extensive we have offered. 34 O A/B Ex Lot 34 "Types set" comprising 1d Plate I & Plate II x2 (one on Laid Paper); 2d Plates I early, intermediate & late states, Plate II early & late states, Plate III, Plate IV x2 (one on Laid Paper) & Plate V x2 (one on Laid Paper), and 3d x2 (one on Laid Paper), a few problems but most are fine to very fine examples with full margins, Cat (15) 2,000 Ex Lot O 1d Plate I, Plate II single & pair; 2d Plate I various states x3, Plate II Pick & Shovel Omitted (with Ceremuga Certificate), 'CREVIT' Omitted (superb appearance but thinned), Plate III x2, Plate IV x2 (one with 'PENOE'), and Plate V; and 3d x2; generally of fine to very fine appearance but some faults noted so careful inspection is required, Cat 5000 approximately. (16) 2, E A Lot 36 ESSAYS: 1d Queen Victoria singles in scarlet & in blue on ungummed unwatermarked wove paper, good to large margins. [A similar group of 3 - the third in black - Ex John White & Sir Gawaine Baillie sold for $1610 at auction in July 2005] In his "Encyclopaedia", Robson Lowe attributed this design and those in the following three lots to John Carmichael. An advertisement in "The Australian Philatelist" of March 1988 suggested that the 1d was by Robert Clayton and the others by Carmichael. Our view is that they are all by the same person: the spandrels at the sides have exactly the same characteristics. Given that Clayton was by far the superior engraver he is the more likely candidate. Having said all that, John Bell (NSW) has formed the view that all the examples in the marketplace are posthumous reprints by Alfred van Dyke. 400

A great rarity, this block is considered by some to be one of the highlights of the Frankenstein Collection. (In the catalogue for that sale, the block was erroneously described as being "rebacked", which it is not.) Multiples of the Laid Paper stamps are extremely scarce, and this is probably the largest recorded multiple. There were no multiples in the Slade-Slade, Wiggins, "Espana", White or Rivett-Carnac Collections. Judge Hamilton (1958) had a pair in ultramarine, Dale-Lichtenstein had an unused pair, the "Manwood" Collection included a horizontal strip of 3 in the Prussian blue shade SG 35, and Frankenstein had a pair in Prussian blue (wrongly described as ultramarine). 5, F A Lot 59 THREE PENCE: Bluish Wove Paper 3d yellow-green SG 42, margins good to large, very fine bars cancel of Sydney, Cat G A Lot 60 THREE PENCE: Bluish Wove Paper 3d yellow-green with 'SIGIIIUM' SG 42c [R5/3], good even margins, bars cancel of Sydney well clear of the variety, Cat

(4) NEW SOUTH WALES - Barred Numeral Cancellations We are delighted to have been instructed to offer the famous collection of Barred Numerals formed by Hugh Freeman from Sydney. Hugh has earned an undisupted reputation as the King of Numerals for his keen (some might say manic) pursuit of all postmarks numerical. Never one to shirk a challenge, Hugh wasn't satisifed with collecting his NSW BNs on just any old stamp: he decided to acquire them only on "Sydney Views"!, and fine examples at that. The result is an incomparable combination of classic stamps and their cancellers, the quality and visual appeal of which is quite breathtaking. Rarity ratings are for examples on "Sydney Views" only and are taken from Michael Nibbs' list published in "Sydney Views" No 20 (Aug 1988). 500T Lot A+ A1 '1' Original State (note sloping upper serif) of Ryde, slightly watery but still very fine strike on Plate IV 2d Prussian blue SG 32 (large margins with outer framelines on three sides, Cat 150). 49 Prestige Philately - Auction No 168 Page: 49 SOUTH AUSTRALIA - Official Stamps - Departmental Overprints We are pleased to introduce the collection formed by Rodney Attwood of Adelaide. This is the seventh significant offering of these fascinating stamps that we have been privileged to present, including the collections of Les Munn (15/5/2004), "Sir Humphrey" (8/10/2005), Harry Lower (12/5/2007), Victor Bullock (1/9/2007) & Frederick Hall (9/2/2008). Bidders should be mindful that defective sheets were often used for overprinting, resulting in many Departmentals being poorly centred, often exhibiting irregular or trimmed perforations, separation faults etc. Fine examples are thus the exception rather than the rule: those graded 'B' or even 'C' are generally at least average quality for the particular type. Until Stanley Gibbons properly lists and assigns values to these stamps they will remain grossly undervalued. Our estimates are conservative, based on our previous results, to which mention is made where appropriate. Please note that stamps Perf 11½-12½ are noted as "Perf 11½" for brevity. Ex Lot O The annotated balance of the collection with 35 different users represented including Red Overprints x21 & Blue Overprints x9, many fine examples and a number of highly rated but defective stamps, some minor duplication, condition very mixed. 68 Prestige Philately - Auction No 168 Page: 68 SOUTH AUSTRALIA - NORTHERN TERRITORY POSTMARKS We are pleased to offer the collection formed by John Forrest from England. "The Territory" is our Wild West: In 1871 there were 201 whites in an area larger than New South Wales, compared with South Australia's population of 185,000. By 1883 the white population had swelled to 2000, but the effects of recession two decades later caused this figure to be halved by 1908! Growth thereafter was steady but even in 1954, at 16489, it was still less than 10% of South Australia's population 70 years earlier! Thus it should be understood that most post offices were both remote and little utilised. Very little postal history has survived and most datestamps even on stamp or piece are rare. It is a highly challenging collecting field. However, the small collector base means that most NT material is grossly undervalued relative to its rarity. This then is an opportunity for new entrants who don't have unlimited resources. It is noteworthy that 2011 marks the centenary of the Northern Territory being transferred (on ) from South Australian to Commonwealth control. References are from "The Postal History of the Northern Territory" by Ed Williams, and "Squared Circles..." by Overton. Despite us having sold the Northern Territory collections formed by Phil Collas, Monica Comrie (NZ), John Bell & Victor Bullock, there are a number of markings included here that we have never before offered. 479 S A B2- Lot 479 Palmerston (1): unframed 'PO NORTHN TERR[ITORY]/DE1/1864/SA' cds light strike on Rouletted 6d blue.
