The only known cover bearing all three values of the Pence Issue, a great rarity of British North America; certificate BPA (1999). A unique usage of a double 3 d. bisect, used shortly after the introduction of the Cents-Currency due to lack of 5 cent stamps since the Connel-stamp was not issued; certificates Philatelic Foundation (1956) and BPA (1976). Reverse with 'St. John / NB' datestamp (Sept 19) and Hull arrival cds (Oct 3). Some file folds but a most attractive entire of great scarcity. Certs. MAR 7" and adjacent red "PAID 10 CENTS". A very rare and most attractive cover, only 2 such frankings are known. 11 76 London 2015 Europhilex Rarities Auction 16 May shilling dull violet, horizontal pair and single with diagonal bi-sect or tri-sect 3 d. dull red, tied by grill "4" to envelope from "BATHURST NO " via London and Panama to Callao, Peru; franking with mostly good margins, touched in places, shilling-values small marginal tears and the bi-sect with crease; the cover restored and pressed. A very rare franking and the only known cover from New Brunswick to South America, also the only recorded use of a 1 shilling pair on cover; certificate BPA (1999). Note: It is believed that the sender intended to use the 3 d. as a tri-sect to make up the 36½ d. rate with 37 d. franking as the closest possible way to fulfill this rate; assuming the 3 d. was bi-sected, the overpayment would be 1 d. Pratt (Aug 15): First Day of Issue, the famous cover bearing 4 d. orange-vermilion, used example with large margins at top and at base, shaved at right and touched at left, used on 1860 cover to Baltimore (Tucker correspondence) cancelled by barred obliterator in black. 'St. Johns-Newfoundland-Paid' in red alongside (Aug. 15), overstruck with 'Boston Br. Pkt. / 5' charge marking in black (Aug 22). Despite the small faults, a remarkable and rare cover, only six covers recorded thus - this being used on First Day of Issue of the 4 d. adhesive and the earliest recorded usage of any of the orange-vermilion issue. Envelope with some manuscript docketing but a great rarity - only 12 covers are recorded in the Pratt census (this is #4) - and this is the earliest recorded usage of this stamp. The adhesives with excellent colour and large margins with just the 1 d. value being just shaved at left, tied by mute barrred grid handstamps in black and by 'London / Paid' transit cds (March 5) in red. Manuscript '1/1d.' at left and reverse with Halifax despatch cds (Feb 23) and 'Nizza Mara.' arrival cds (March 8) in black. A famous and very rare cover. Cert. RPS (2011). Note: This cover remains the sole known usage to continental Europe other than France - Sardinia returned Nice to France just 16 days after the arrival of this letter as a result of the Treaty of Turin (March 24, 1860). Steamer Madras via Marseilles' and on front panel 'via Alexandria and Trieste', struck on despatch with Crown PAID AT HONG KONG in red with double arc 'Hong Kong' cds in black (April 14) on reverse. Blue ink '9/9' (kreuzers by land and sea) deleted at left, struck with 'D. A. a. L.' (Diretto Austriaco Austriache Lire) in red above. Fascinating letter: 'I shall have much pleasure in accepting the offer of Consul at Canton...you will be aware that relations with the Govt. at Canton are suspended owing to the measure of hostilities that have been forced on the Representatives of Her Britsih Majesty's Government...the British Admiral still retains his position on the river at Canton, he has punished aggresive measures...an adequate force would enable him to strike a decisive blow'. A fine and most unusual usage prepaid to Sardinia. 6 2' : Cover mailed from Hong Kong to Turin addressed to the head of the Civil List of Private Patrimony to the King of Sardinia, endorsed at top 'Via Malta', struck on reverse with double HONG KONG cds in black (Dec 15) and MALTA double arc cds (Jan 22, 1858). The letter was held at Malta presumably for non-payment and the reverse marked 'Postaggio eragato dal Console di S.M. ni Malta al... borsabile pressi i.. Bonafond'. The cover being sent on with manuscript 'Malta' used as cancellation on front and prepaid 1/6 d. in red manuscript. Three line PIROSCAFO / POSTALI / FRANCESI in red and Genova cds alongside in black (Feb 5) and TPO cds and Turin arrival on reverse with manuscript 'Recevuto 1.8 lire / 10 Febrario 1858'. An extraordinary and rare cover. 6 7' GBP 1500 USD 2200 GBP 5625 USD /71: 2 c. brown, 12 c. pale greenish blue and 30 c. orange vermilion overlapped on small 1866 envelope endorsed 'via Alexandria' to Genoa, Italy tied by 'B62' obliterators in black, with single ring 'Hong Kong' despatch cds (July 26) on reverse. 52 London 2015 Europhilex Rarities Auction 16 May India Scinde Dawk Postal Runners ca (July 1): Scinde District Dawk, ½ anna embossed on thick white paper, a superb used vertical pair with huge margins all round, cancelled by two strikes of the KOTREE large star (or cogwheel, Robson Lowe Type E, with the confirming pieces for this cancellation illustrated in Jochen Heddergott's Edition D'Or, Volume XX on pages 254 to 257) handstamps in black. BPA states "slightly treated to reduce staining", in our opinion the colour of cancellation somewhat faded since it is water-soluble; a superb and rare multiple in wonderful quality for these delicate issues. Certs. Holcombe (1993), BPA (2015) Gi for singles = 4'500+ S1 3 2' (July 1): Scinde District Dawk, ½ anna embossed in blue on white paper, a fine used example with large margins all round, neatly cancelled by lozenge of dots obliterator in black. Slightest of horizontal cracks at upper left, well outside the design, minute thin spot at base and insignificant scissor cut away from design at top. An exceptionally rare stamp in fine condition for this delicate issue. Cert. BPA (2015) Gi = 9'000 S2 2' (July 1): Scinde District Dawk, ½ anna scarlet, embossed on wax seal, used example on small piece cancelled by diamond lozenge of dots in black, probably at Hyderabad. A few surface scrapes or blemishes but a magnificent used example of an enormously rare and famous stamp. Cert. Coat of Arms sideways, Die I, Stone 'A', a splendid block of twelve from top of sheet of 96 subjects, positions 1-6/9-14, showing position 6 with the prominent retouch to the Chignon, margins ample to large all round, some minor aging and minor corner bend at upper right of no real significance and not detracting from the beauty of this rare multiple, cancelled by diamond lozenge of dots in black and part double ring datestamp at left.
