Memorable stamps, for more than the recut tents and the row 4 buffer bars error on the 3d+1d stamp, that immediately spring to collectors minds. For the specialist, this issue is rich in research opportunities. Almost all of the main sheet stamps have some variety present that will make it plate-able. Similarly, the miniature sheets can be plated to their positions in the master sheets. Then, there is the multitude of small retouches made to both values and in both sheet and miniature sheet format, including the recut tents, to add interest. This research reviews the flaws and retouches and may act as a guide to help others form a good collection of these interesting stamps. 7 1958, BRIGADE CHILDREN ERRORS and VARIETIES Issued: , August 20 In August 1956 the Council of the Boys Brigade approached the Postmaster General to have the Boys Brigade featured on the Health stamps of This would help celebrate the Brigade s 75th Anniversary of its founding, the oldest of all the uniformed youth organisations. This proposal was opposed by the Health Camp Federation, but undeterred and under time pressure, the Post Office approached James Berry to produce designs featuring the Boys Brigade and the sister organisation the Girls Life Brigade. It was hoped that seeing the designs, the Health Camp Federation would change their mind, and were disappointed when the PO gave authority for the Brigade issue to continue. At this point, the Post Office announced that they were already working on designs for the 1959 Health issue that would feature native birds and would include the Health Camp Federation on the selection committee. The contract for printing was awarded to Harrison and Sons Ltd, London. Small design changes were made and essays were approved subject to a change in colour, with the Boys Brigade changed from bright red to blue, to match the colour of the boys brigade uniform. The stamps were printed in sheets of 120 stamps, 6 rows of 20 stamps. Once again miniature sheets were produced from both values. Both large sheets and miniature sheets were produced on Guard Bridge Mill paper with watermark upright. Production details were as follows: Designers: James Berry Printers: Harrison and Sons Ltd Process: Photogravure Paper Type: Guard Bridge paper with multiple NZ and star watermark upright. Perforations: Gauge 14 x 14½ applied by a double comb head moving from right of the sheet to the left. On the main sheets, there is an additional perforation hole at the top and bottom of each column. Miniature sheets were perforated similarly, but lacked the additional hole in the top and bottom selvedge. The layout of the main sheets is recognisable to plate block collectors and follows the normal Harrison and Sons layout (see later). Eight miniature sheets were laid down on the master sheet in two rows of four sheets. There was a large margin around each miniature sheet even after they were guillotined and trimmed by the printers during production, and the NZPO had to re-trim the miniature sheets so that the selvedge was an acceptable width and excess watermarked, perforated, paper could not be used for fraudulent purposes. The stamps were withdrawn from sale on 31 January 1959 with the following numbers having been sold: 2d+1d large sheets 3,694,732 stamps; miniature sheets 235,000 sheets. 3d+1d large sheets 3,561,231 stamps; miniature sheets 235,000 sheets.

8 8 New Zealand Postage Stamps Errors and Varieties 2d+1d Sheet Layout The plate block comprises a single figure 3 appearing above column 3. Each individual stamp has the printers imprint in the lower margin. The sheet value appears in the top selvedge above columns 19 an 20. The sheet number appears above columns 4 and 5 and is printed in black, as an accounting mechanism, not printed as part of stamp production. The arrow in the top selvedge marks the centre point of the sheet, appearing between columns 10 and 11. A similar arrow in the lower selvedge marks the centre line of the sheet, useful for counter clerks to separate half sheets. Each individual stamp carries the printers imprint HARRISON AND SONS LTD., LONDON in the lower margin, centralised, in the same colour as the stamp itself. The printers details did not appear in the plate block. The guide hole in the top selvedge appears above columns 14 and 15 and is surrounded on three sides by a box, top normally trimmed.

Each individual stamp has the printers imprint in the lower margin. The sheet number appears above columns 12 and 13 and is printed in black, as an accounting mechanism, not printed as part of stamp production. The sheet value appears in the top selvedge above columns 19 an 20. The arrow in the top selvedge marks the centre point of the sheet, appearing between columns 10 and 11. A similar arrow in the lower selvedge marks the centre line of the sheet, useful for counter clerks to separate half sheets. 10 10 New Zealand Postage Stamps Errors and Varieties Bumper Bars: On the main sheets, bumper bars were present on the inner edge of the left selvedge of both values. These were thin oblong bars slightly shorter than the length of the stamp, placed just to the left of the left perforations of column 1. Buffer bars have been used on earlier issues to protect the left edge of the printing plate so that the bars took the impact of printing rather than the stamp image itself. Without these bars, the image could become worn and lose clarity. The purpose of these bumper bars, as they are referred to by Harrison and Sons, is questionable. Certainly the sheets were printed horizontally, as seen by the presence of doctor blade lines, and buffer bars could be needed to protect the leading edge. There is a major variety affecting the buffer bars of the 3d+1d stamp, on row 4. This is the well-known variety where the foil, that obscures the additional image on the large positive, has folded over revealing part of those additional images. See page 19 for more details. The placement of the bars on the 3d+1d is relatively uniform, with the top of the bar aligning roughly to the top of the stamp alongside. Apart from row 6, where the bar is positioned slightly lower than others. The 2d+1d sheet is not without variety. Look to the bar alongside row 2, where there is a large indent into the left edge, just below the midpoint. Also note the wavy bar against row 4.

11 1958 Health Stamp Plating - 2d+1d Girls Life Brigade Main Sheet Errors and Varieties 11 2d+1d Girls Life Brigade Main Sheet Errors and Varieties Double perforations One sheet sold through the Post Office at Wellington had an extra strike of the double comb head affecting column 19 and 20 of the sheet. In column 20 the stamps had double perforations all round, whilst from column 19 this had double perfs on three sides, the left being normal. $ Shade variations: Dark green with screen dots. Best seen on the dress and by the arm. Dark Green normal, the shading is relatively uniform. On normal stamps the dark green shading has a uniform spread of colour, perhaps mottled in places. Some examples show this darker green with a distinct ribbed effect as though the green colour is fainter, allowing the mesh of the colour spots to show through. These shade variations appear on the same sheet. R6/18 is a good example of the ribbed effect. Retouches: Minor imperfections of the photogravure plates were noted in trial prints and minor repairs made prior to the bulk printing. These took the form of small retouches, usually to the sky. These are most likely to correct significant white patches found in the design. These retouches are usually formed of a series of short, usually horizontal, scratches performed using a graver at the affected area. These retouches are small but tend to leave a darker green patch. These can be differentiated from similar dark patches (caused by the pigment of the ink) by the presence of the graver lines in the retouch. Retouches were applied to stamps at: R1/4, R1/13, R3/3, R3/5, R3/13, R3/14, R3/15, R5/13, R6/6, R6/16 and were minor in nature. Varieties affecting stamps from the main sheet Top qtr sheet R1/1 to R1/2 R1/1 Screen dots between the stamps. Weakness at the top of the stamp. Transient diagonal white line across the lower sky right of the three figures in the background.

R1/19 R1/19 R2/1 Almost vertical scratch through the sky on the right above the girls head, left of the value 2. Large green spot on the girls sash, just below the G of GLBC Transient green patch that obliterates the face of the left person in the background. R2/7 R2/16 R3/3 Broken vertical line of green spots in the lower margin below the S of HARRISON in the imprint. Short diagonal line in the top margin above the L of HEALTH amongst the perforations. What looks like a tiny retouch in the sky right of the top right cabbage tree head. R3/5 R3/6 R3/13 Tiny retouch to the left edge of the right column, right of the girls' neck. Small retouch to the sky just left of centre, just below the dark clouds at the top. Small retouch to the sky on the vertical centre, opposite the girls' mouth.

R5/5 R5/7 R5/13 Dark green spot at the top of the top right cabbage tree head, amongst the leaves. There is a dark green spot that joins the gap in the jaws of the 'G' of 'GLBC' on the girls' sash. Small retouch in the sky just to the left of the girls' arm on the left, just below the shoulder. R6/4 R6/6 R6/16 White patch above the girls' eye, below the badge on the cap. Small retouch in the sky top left of the left end of the girls' cap, and just below the dark clouds. Tiny retouch on the right column top right of the girls' shoulder.

14 14 New Zealand Postage Stamps Errors and Varieties Top quarter of the sheet Row 1 buffer bar Row 1 buffer bar R1/1 to R1/2 Green Green Across much of the top quarter of the sheet there is a fine green mesh, as screen dots appearing in the margins between stamps. This is seen best in stamps from row 1 where the screen dots are shown against the white paper in the top selvedge. The visibility of the screen dots is dependent upon the depth of the green colour. The left buffer bar has a short horizontal white line from the right side 3mm from the top about half way through the thickness of the bar. Green The buffer bar also has two white spots towards the foot of the bar. - Green Transient weakness at the top of the stamps. In R1/1 this is at the extreme top right of the stamp; on R1/2 this extends from the left edge to half way across the stamp. This causes the green colour to become very pale having multiple white spots. R1/1 Green Two green spots in the top margin above the top left corner. Horizontal white line appears through the background through the word HEALTH. Doctor blade flaws Blue Horizontal blue lines appear through the stamps above the boys head. White Near horizontal line appears through the background above or through the word HEALTH Row 4 buffer bar error This buffer bar shows part of the design of the stamp in the lower right side. The printer, Harrison and Sons Ltd acknowledged this error and gave an account for this occurrence. In preparing this printing plate more images than needed on the final sheet were laid down on the large positive. The best portion of that positive was then chosen, with extra images masked out using tin foil. In this example, the tin foil strip had become damaged or turned back prior to carbon printing, thus revealing part of the design from the extra image. Retouches to stamps from column 20 on the large sheets of the 3d+1d stamp. During printing it was noticed that the stamps from column 20 showed prominent signs of wearing along the right edge of the sheet, with the stamps losing colour and definition. The cylinder was removed from the printing machine and at least four of the stamps were retouched, at R1/20, R3/30, R4/20 and R6/20. From sheet issued at Westport with advanced wearing, the stamps at R2/20 and R5/20 were also affected but were not recut. The availability of mint copies and sheets of the retouched stamps are not as scarce as the Postage Stamps of New Zealand volume 4, P329 would suggest.

R4 buffer bar Blue This buffer bar shows part of the design of the stamp in the lower right side. 36 PLATING THE 1958 HEALTH MINIATURE SHEETS It is a relatively straightforward exercise to plate the individual sheets from the 1958 Health issue. There are enough distinguishing marks to differentiate each miniature sheet from its neighbour. Although the 'distinguishing marks' and varieties may not be that spectacular, the use of a small magnifying glass will make the process much easier. On the 3d+1d sheets, five sheets received attention to recut the right side of the rightmost tent. This was the same problem that affected the main sheets of the same value, and these can be collected in two forms, pre-recut and in recut state. Miniature sheet 7 of the 3d+1d has three states, with a minor spot developing on the bugle as state 2, post issue, but pre-recutting. This document attempts to illustrate those differentiating marks for each sheet, by showing the miniature sheet (at the centre of the page) and displaying the identified varieties around it by way of a small picture and description of the variety. In some cases the picture may show a number of what may be considered differentiating marks (especially spots), please use those circled to correctly link the illustration to the text The miniature sheets for this value were printed from a large sheet containing 8 miniature sheets. The large sheet can easily be reconstructed by varieties occurring in each miniature sheet. 2d+1d layout of master sheet comprising 8 miniature sheets in positions as indicated R 3 3R 7 7R 4 4R 8 8R Miniature sheets from the 3d+1d value can be found in normal state and a variant that shows recutting to stamps R1/3 and/or R2/3, affecting the right side of the tent. The retouched state is indicated with R after the sheet number. The miniature sheets were cut from larger sheets that comprised eight miniature sheets arranged in two rows of four sheets. Each of the miniature sheets can therefore be given a number 1 through 8 to locate it to the 'uncut large master sheet' as shown above. The stamp position of the six stamps on the sheet is reference via the normal row/column format. All miniature sheets have their left and right selvedges perforated through. The top and bottom selvedges in each case do not have the additional perf hole as seen in the main sheets. The only selvedge marking that appeared on the miniature sheets was the miniature sheet value, Miniature Sheet Price 1/6 on the 2d+1d and Miniature Sheet Price 2/- on the 3d+1d. Stamps from the miniature sheets and main sheets were indistinguishable. Although Harrison and Sons Ltd. guillotined and trimmed the miniature sheets prior to delivery to the Post Office, they were still oversized, measuring 4¾ inches square, and had unprinted, perforated and watermarked paper of stamp size on the sides. The Post Office thought this to be a security risk and the Government Printing Office was commissioned to trim these further. What the Government Printing Office did not realise was that Harrison and Sons had not trimmed the sheets consistently and had left the side selvedges of unequal widths. Trimming these unequal sheets further, resulted in some having very narrow selvedges one side and wide selvedges the other, retaining the stamp sized paper that they wished to remove. These were issued regardless, and examples with wide/narrow selvedges are collectable. Some 2d+1d miniature sheets became damp and the selvedges stuck together. In order to recover these sheets, the Post Office trimmed them further, resulting in miniature sheets with narrow selvedges all round, and were smaller than most issued.

37 1958 Health Stamp Plating - 2d+1d Miniature Sheets 37 White streaks across miniature sheets Miniature sheets were more prevalent to be affected by white streaks across the face of the stamp, than large sheets. This is due to the larger amount of copper plate and smaller number of stamps to be wiped by the doctor blade. Errors 2d+1d Miniature Sheets Lower half unprinted Three 2d+1d miniature sheets were issued with the bottom half of the stamp almost blank, the top half being smudged. These were produced at the beginning or end of the print run and should have been removed as waste by the printers. Miscut sheet Cylinders for the miniature sheets contained eight miniature sheets arranged two rows of four. Each miniature sheet once guillotined had wide side selvedges of about stamp size on watermarked paper with perforations on three sides. This security exposure was enough to prompt the Post Office, via the Government Printing Office, to trim the sheets. Later it was found that 10 bundles of miniature sheets had been affected by dampness and were trimmed a second time, making them smaller than normal. Few examples are found with wide side selvedges due to poor guillotining. See 3d+1d below. 2d+2d examples of this error are rare. * CP NZSC Dec 1984

There is also an interesting scratch on the stamp at row 1/2, that runs in a haphazard manner from the bush left side near the base to a spot above the NE of NEW of the country name. This is like no normal long, regular, scratch but is jagged, changing direction much as a plate crack would appear. There is an eye visible spot after the S of Sheet in the miniature sheet value at top right that will help identify this sheet from others. 54 54 New Zealand Postage Stamps Errors and Varieties Errors 3d+1d Miniature Sheets 3d+1d Miscut Miscut Spectacular miscut, stamps intact, but showing an extremely narrow selvedge on the left side, but the right hand selvedge wide enough for an additional stamp which includes perforations all round. (Appears as though the sheet is missing two stamps on the right hand side). It was found that the printers did not guillotine the 3d+1d sheets to ensure that the side selvedges were of equal width. The miniature sheets when received from the printers had wide side selvedges. As a security measure, the Government Printer guillotined the sheets to remove the blank stamps either side. Some miniature sheets were issued with unequal side selvedges as a result. The 3d+1d sheets were relatively common, whereas the 2d+1d is rare Retouches to stamps from the miniature sheets of the 3d+1d value. Like the large sheets, the stamps from the right side of the miniature sheets began to wear, losing the shading of the design near the right selvedge. To avoid the right side of the tent becoming white, the stamps were recut. The following stamps were affected. MS #3 R2/3 Early sheets MS #3 R2/3 Retouched state MS #3 R2/3 Retouched state later sheets Miniature sheet 3 has one tent recut on stamp at R2/3. This stamp has the right side of the tent on the far right heavily recut to reinstate the shading lost on the earlier (normal) printing. The recutting has fine lines horizontally and some diagonally overlapping, with no distinct border on the right. Later printing has this recutting with signs of wearing, making them fade.

Like sheet #3 this sheet has recutting to the right side of the tent on the far right of stamp at R2/3. MS #6 R2/3 Early sheets MS #6 R2/3 Recut state MS #6 R2/3 Recut state later sheets Miniature sheet 6 has one tent recut on stamp at R2/3. The recutting to the rightmost tent of R2/3 has fine horizontal lines used to add the shading lost during printing, and is generally well done. Wearing of the plate does not appear to have affected this recutting as much as other stamps. MS #7 R1/3 Early sheets MS #7 R1/3 Retouched state Miniature sheet 7 has two tents recut on stamps at R1/3 and R2/3. On R1/3 the sky retains its' patch appearance but is still faint. The right edge of the sky above the trees is not straight, bowing inwards. The paleness of the right hand side of the tent is corrected somewhat by fine, near horizontal, lines of shading for the complete height of the tent. R2/3 has the sky above the trees on the right patchy (as in R1/3) and still pale, but not so pronounced as R1/3. The tent has had some attention, with the top half of the right hand side filled with very fine near horizontal lines. The lower part is uncoloured. The recutting at the top of the tent overlaps the existing shading screen dots. The bottom lines complete the shading of that portion of the design, to the margin. R2/3 has the recutting of the shading on the right side of the rightmost tent less bold to other examples. The top portion of the recutting has short fine lines evenly spaced. The lines at the bottom of the tent are at an angle and much more uneven. MS #8 R2/3 Early sheets MS #8 R2/3 Retouched state

As with other miniature sheets, some stamps show small flaws and retouching; such as row 1/1 where a small flaw is seen inside the loops of the bugle; row 1/2 with a retouch to the right of the mouth of the bugle and row 1/3 where there is a small retouch on the boy s cheek. Also look for the prominent blue spot next to the tip of the boy s nose on stamp at row 1/1. State 1 R1/1 Blue Dark spot in front of the boys' nose. E4 R1/1 Blue Small flaw inside the loops of the bugle, by the cord. F5 6 R1/2 Blue Tiny blue spot by the stay of the middle tent of the group on the right. K5 6 R1/2 Blue Small retouch in front of the mouth of the bugle. E7 R1/2 Blue Dark spot in the background below the 'A' of 'LAND'. B C6 R1/2 Blue Blue spot at the apex of the rightmost tent. J7 R1/3 Blue Small retouch on the boys' cheek. F3 4 R2/3 Blue Tiny spot on the middle of the boys' forearm. G4 5 R2/3 Blue Tiny spot on the side of the head near the hat. E3 State 2 Tent recutting MS #6 R2/3 Early sheets MS #6 R2/3 Retouched state MS #6 R2/3 Retouched state later printing Miniature sheet 6 has one tent recut on stamp at R2/3. The recutting to the rightmost tent of R2/3 has fine horizontal lines used to add the shading lost during printing, and is generally well done. Wearing of the plate does not appear to have affected this recutting as much as other stamps, but still looses definition on the right edge of the recutting that becomes wavy.

67 1958 Health Plating - 3d+1d Miniature Sheet 6 Map 67 3d+1d Miniature Sheet 6 Map R1/1 Small flaw inside the loops of the bugle, by the cord. R2/3 Tiny spot on the middle of the boys' forearm. R2/3 The right side of the rightmost tent is retouched. R2/3 The right side of the rightmost tent is normal.

68 68 New Zealand Postage Stamps Errors and Varieties 3d+1d Miniature Sheet 7 MINIATURE SHEET 3d+1d M/S #7 State 1 Miniature sheet 7 has two tents recut, that at row 1/3 and row 2/3, but not as extensive as those on other sheets. Other than this, look for the lesser blue spots that appear on many stamps, the most prominent of which is on the bugle of stamp at row 1/2 that developed prior to the tent recutting. This sheet appeared in three states as below. Sheet value Blue Small spot between the first and second 'e' of 'Sheet'. - Sheet value Blue Small spot at the bottom right of the hyphen between the words. - R1/1 Blue Blue spot in the left margin by the 'H' of 'HEALTH'. L0 R1/2 Blue Tiny spot near the boys' elbow. H4 R1/2 Blue State 1: no blue spot on the right tube of the bugle. E F6 R1/3 Blue Tiny white spot near the angle of the band on the boys' hat. D E 2 3 R1/3 Blue Spot below the mouth of the bugle. E F 6 7 R1/3 Blue The sky above the hills on the right is paler than normal, as is the tent on the far right. R1/3 Blue (Transient) There is a pronounced 'ring' in the sky above the hills on the right as if it were a watermark on the stamp. G6-H8 R2/1 Blue Blue spot at the centre of the large tent on the far right. J7 8 R2/2 Blue Dark blue spot on the boys' shoulder pointed to by the white diamond. G2 R2/3 Blue The area above the hills on the right has the sky pale due to absence of screen dots. This is more pronounced than on R1/3. The tent on the far right is very pale. G7 G6-H8 State 2 R1/2 Blue Blue spot on the right tube of the bugle, bottom left of the mouth of the bugle. This did not occur on early sheets, but developed prior to the tent recutting. E F6 State 3 Tent recutting Miniature sheet 7 has two tents recut on stamps at R1/3 and R2/3. On R1/3 the sky retains its' patch appearance but is still faint. The right edge of the sky above the trees is not straight, bowing inwards. The paleness of the right hand side of the tent is corrected somewhat by fine, near horizontal, lines of shading for the complete height of the tent. MS #7 R1/3 Early sheets MS #7 R1/3 Retouched state R2/3 has the sky above the trees on the right patchy (as in R1/3) and still pale, but not so pronounced as R1/3. The tent has had some attention, with the top half of the right hand side filled with very fine near horizontal lines. The lower part is uncoloured. MS #7 R2/3 Early sheets MS #7 R2/3 Retouched state

R2/2 Dark blue spot on the boys' shoulder pointed to by the white diamond. R1/3 Rightmost tent is retouched. R2/3 Rightmost tent is retouched. R1/3 Rightmost tent is normal. R2/3 Rightmost tent is normal.

70 70 New Zealand Postage Stamps Errors and Varieties 3d+1d Miniature Sheet 8 MINIATURE SHEET 3d+1d M/S #8 Look to the miniature sheet value where the hyphen and division bars are shortened on the right and at top respectively. This is similar to sheet 4 that has the hyphen shortened only. There are many blue and white spots to be seen, but look for the flaw on the boy s wrist on stamp at row 2/2 to confirm. As with sheet 7, two tents are recut, but this time for the full length of their right sides. State 1 Sheet value Blue The hyphen of the value '2/-' is noticeably shortened (as sheet 4). The top of the fraction bar is also short. R1/1 Blue Tiny blue spot on the boys' elbow. H4 R1/1 Blue Tiny spot between the '1d' value and the tent. K L7 R1/2 Blue Tiny flaw as a whitish patch below the tent on the left by the left margin. R1/3 Blue Two spots one either side of the 'E' of 'POSTAGE'. H1 R1/3 Blue Blue spot above 'LTD' in the lower margin. M5 R2/1 Blue Tiny spot on the middle tent of the three on the right. J K6 R2/1 Blue Spot on the boys' cheek. F4 R2/2 Blue White spot in the background bottom right of the 'T' of 'POSTAGE'. E1 R2/2 Blue Large flaw on the boys' wrist. F5 R2/2 Blue Dark blue spot on the boys' breast pocket. I3 R2/3 Blue Blue spot after the last 'N' of 'LONDON' in the lower margin. M6 7 R2/3 Blue White spot to the left of the boys' breast pocket. I3 R2/3 Blue Blue spot in the band of the boys' hat. D3 R2/3 Blue The sky above the tent on the far right and the tent itself is pale. G7-H8 R2/3 Blue Tiny blue spot on the edge of the stamp, just above the trees on the right. State 2 Tent recutting K1 H8 - Miniature sheet 8 has two tents recut on stamps at R1/3 and R2/3. R1/3 shows recutting to the top and bottom of the right side of the rightmost tent, with short faint near horizontal lines. The recutting at the top of the tent overlaps the existing shading screen dots. The bottom lines complete the shading of that portion of the design, to the margin. MS #8 R1/3 Early sheets MS #8 R1/3 Retouched state R2/3 has the recutting of the shading on the right side of the rightmost tent less bold to other examples. The top portion of the recutting has short fine lines evenly spaced. The lines at the bottom of the tent are at an angle and much more uneven. MS #8 R2/3 Early sheets MS #8 R2/3 Retouched state
