1 OREGON STEWARDSHIP 4015 S. Stage Rd. Medford, OR or Fall, 2017 JIM HUTCHINS DAY! On Thursday evening, October 26, Mayor Wheeler proclaimed November 1 Jim Hutchins Day. Oregon Stewardship and the City of Medford have honored Jim for 25 years of teaching stewardship to students in schools. On November 1 Oregon Stewardship hosted a gathering at Terra Firma Home in downtown Medford. Javier Cruz of simple.cafe catered the food. Southern Oregon University donated Raider Red wine. Thank you. BEAR CREEK RIPARIAN AND GREENWAY IMPROVMENTS Alan Frierson, MD wanted to see some improvements to an area of the Bear Creek Greenway. Last spring he sponsored a large section of the riparian area, replacing blackberries with native plants. He also wished for more trees to be planted along the Greenway. To that end, he donated money for seven 10 to 14 foot trees. We purchased the trees from Plant Oregon which gave a generous discount. The trees were selected and planted by City of Medford Arborist Adam Airoldi on November 3. The trees planted were one each of Port Orford Cedar, Bi-colored Oak, Hickory, and Valley Oak, and three Coastal Redwoods.

2 High School Student Projects Coquille students are restoring the planting areas along the Coquille Riverwalk. They removed weeds, pruned bushes, and planted six new native plants. Gold Beach fourth graders at Elephant Bar Trail with Jim and high school mentors. They studied stream and estuary ecology and enjoyed a fun hike. Pacific students maintain the Crooked Fir Trail created by Pacific students last spring. Illinois Valley students are removing Scotch broom from the East Fork of the Illinois River. They will plant Ponderosa Pine this winter. They have also helped with salmon counts on the Illinois River.

3 South Medford students are clearing blackberries from the riparian area at Bear Creek Park. After the clearing was done, they planted native plants on the creek bank. They also helped with the Bear Creek salmon counts. Myrtle Point students cleared front flower beds at the high school and replanted bulbs and winter color. They also mentored 4th grade students on their trip to view spawning salmon and study stream ecology at Camp Myrtlewood on the Coqulle River. Students in several high schools, take cuttings of willow, osier dogwood and snowberry for later use on riparian projects. To the left are South Medford students planting the osier dogwood cuttings they had just cut.
