1 632 AccuPro Set-up & Operation Always check: Reel & Roller bearings Bent or broken blades Make sure the reel spins freely in the frame Place the Reel Into the Machine There are three lifting options for reel placement on a 632 AccuPro: Manual winch, Electric winch The Workstation Regardless of which lifting option, you must lift and place the reel on the table where the front roller will rest in front roller brackets as illustrated above.

2 632/652 Quick Reference Set-up Procedures * 3 Main Switches OFF *Traverse Switch; Spin Drive Switch; Grinding Wheel Switch SPIN / RELIEF Selector Switch in Spin Mode STEP BY STEP 1.) Position the Reel into the machine: Horizontal Bracket - Position reel shaft to center of reel positioner gauge. This will get you within a tooth or two of where you need to be to relief grind. Vertical Bracket : Position the bottom of reel blade at the level, or approximate level of table top. This will dictate the vertical bracket position as illustrated to the right. These are the initial steps for positioning the reel into the machine. Once you fine tune your position, you will note the bracket positions for that particular reel and it will never change.

3 2.) Fine tune your reel position based on the desired relief angle: Put the relief grinding stone on first Pull T handle plunger pin on left side of grinding head and rotate the relief finger assembly forward in a counter-clockwise direction to the relief position. When pulling the plunger pin, place your thumb on the round knob and use it like a pry bar, this makes the plunger pin much easier to pull out Jog the grinding head up and trap the reel blade between the stone and the fixed relief finger. At this point, check three things: Clearance with the front roller. Clearance with the blade above the one you re reliefing. The actual relief angle. NOTE - If you want more relief angle, move the reel back toward the operator on the horizontal bracket a tooth or two (or more if needed). For example as pictured on the right, you would move the bracket from the 9 position toward the 8 or 7 position. If you want less relief, move the reel in toward the machine. If using the picture on the right, you would move the bracket from the 9 position toward the 10 or 11 position. When you have determined the angle you want, and you have assured that you still have stone clearance with the blade above the one you re reliefing and the front roller, you re now ready to note the bracket positions of that particular reel type. Ensure clearance with the front roller Ensure clearance with the blade above the one you re reliefing This initial process of determining where the reel goes may take several minutes, but it s a one-time exercise. The next time you bring that particular reel in for grinding, all you need to do is reference your bracket positions.

4 3.) Clamp and secure the reel for gauging and grinding Clamp the Front Roller with the two front mounting handles. There are two holes on the front mounting bracket, as on certain reels, the handle must be tilted to avoid hitting the frame of the reel or the front bar that goes across the front of certain reels. *Put the spin stone back on & put the relief finger assembly back in spin position Clamp the rear roller: Place the center support bracket under the roller and use the adjustable hand grip to securely clamp the reel Connect the spin drive You can raise and lower the adjustable scissor jack to the height needed by using the hand-wheel on the front of the assembly -By loosening the two T knobs on the right side of the scissor jack, you can align the spin drive to the center of the reel shaft. Grind all reels with the drive on the same side, this will eliminate moving the spin drive from one side to the other

5 4) After clamping the reel in, use the digital gauge from the front first Place the front alignment gage assembly on the front dowel pin: There is a formula reading the gauge that will speed the process and once understanding the formula, it should NEVER take more than two readings to align on either plane. Loosen the two locking handles on the pivot assembly on the right side of the traverse base, so that it can be adjusted in both the vertical and horizontal plane. Always start alignment on the left side of the reel. Push the gauge into the center shaft of the reel and press the ZERO re-set button on the gauge NOTE: The gauge reads to the ten-thousandths of an inch and the last digit will read either 0 (zero) or 5 (five) as pictured on the right. This is actually ½ of a thousandths, so DISREGARD THIS LAST DIGIT as if it did not exist!!! After setting the gauge to zero on the left, move to the right side of the reel and push the digital gauge into the center shaft of the reel for your first reading The example on the left indicates that you are at.0215" (remember to disregard the last digit, so reality is you are at twenty-one thousandths of an inch, NOT two hundred fifteen!). Adjust until you are opposite of the number, plus half SO, you will adjust to negative plus 1/2 of that measurement, (i.e plus = -.032"). Other Examples: If initial reading is +.050, then I am adjusting to If initial reading is -.030, then I am adjusting to If initial reading is +.075, then I am adjusting to This over-adjustment formula on the first reading speeds the process

6 5) Now use the digital gauge from the bottom of the reel Place the alignment gage directly on the front dowel pin: Follow the same procedures that were used from the front of the reel where you set the gauge to zero on the left, and move the carriage to the right for a first reading. Use the formula Whether doing the vertical or horizontal measurements, you want to make your adjustment until you go opposite the reading, plus ½ of that measurement. This should get you under.010 (ten thousandths) every time. After overcompensating with your first reading, go back to the left side of the reel: Re-set the gauge to zero and move the carriage back to the right and take the gauge back to the center of the reel for your final adjustment As a final reading, whenever you get under ten-thousandths of an inch, go opposite and pull the gauge off. There is no reason to conduct a third reading as you will be within the manufacturer s guidelines for acceptable cylindrical shape. NOTE: You will have disengaged the Belt Clamp Release Arm when using the gauge. Re-engage this traverse belt lever

7 6.) Turn on the Traverse and set your proximity switches. Position proximity switches where the reel barely, but fully comes off the reel blade: Using the speed dial pot, travel and stop at your desired position, and move the proximity switch by hand until it lights up. Conduct this process for both left and right proximity switches. NOTE: If you position the right hand proximity properly, there should be no need to move it when you make the transition to the relief grind. 7.) Jog the grinding head up so the stone contacts the reel blade. Use the rabbit mode to in-feed quickly to make the contact: Then use the turtle mode to barely back the stone off of the reel. This will enable you to begin your spin grind process with very little in-feed needed to make contact, and there is no guessing as to when you will begin contact with the reel once you start the process. 8.) Close the doors. 9.) Turn on the other two MAIN switches... - Spin Drive - Grinding Wheel 10.) Using the 632: Infeed to make contact and begin the spin grinding process. Ensure you have a spin speed that allows for an aggressive grind, yet a smooth grind

8 Key Points to Remember: KNOWING WHERE AND HOW TO POSITION A REEL INTO THE MACHINE: Always use the set up flag when setting up a reel for the first time. Remember the reel should be level with the table top. You can make adjustments to the desired relief angle using the horizontal set up brackets UNDERSTAND HOW THE RELIEF MECHANISM WORKS & FUNCTIONS: Have an understanding of the mechanical working of the relief mechanism, as this will simplify the transition to relief. UNDERSTAND HOW TO READ THE GAUGE: Make the adjustment to Opposite plus ½ of the number you are looking at. Disregard the last digit, as this is to the tenthousandths of an inch. Don t over-think the gauge, and once you are below ten-thou, and pull the gauge off. UNDERSTAND HOW TO LISTEN AND FIND THE CORRECT SPIN SPEED: Always start at the 200rpm for spin speed, and go up or down from there. You want an aggressive grind, but a smooth grind - a consistent spark pattern, and good sound.
