I want to do something new. Why don t you try baseball? Baseball?! What an exciting idea! But I don t know anything about baseball. It s a very popular summer sport in America. It s an old sport. The first American baseball match was in 1839 in New York. Can you play baseball? Of course I can. My dad taught me to play when I was five years old. Then I played in the school team. I gave it up when we came to Hungary. Why don t we organise two teams? Do you want to be our coach? Why not? How many people do we need? Nine for each team. Do you wear special clothes? You wear a baseball cap, special gloves and baseball boots. There is a special helmet too. Do you want to play baseball? Come to the school football field on Friday at 3 o clock. ADVENTURE HOLIDAY CENTRE Read about the children s first day at the holiday centre. The children had a short but tiring trip. They travelled by train. It was crowded and they stood in the corridor. They were happy when they arrived at the holiday centre. They put their things in their bungalows. (They had arguments about sharing the bunk beds!) Then they went to look around. They found the bathrooms and the lounge. The television didn t work but they didn t mind. They preferred playing hide-and-seek behind the bungalows. After a delicious lunch they met their group leader. Then they went on the adventure trail together. Cover the text and answer these questions. How did the children travel to the holiday centre? What did they play before lunch? Where did they go after lunch? Come to the AdventurA dventure Holiday Centre! e! It s ideal for young people who are good at ball games or want to try new adventure sports. Our centre is situated in the hills near a lake. We have a racket centre and facilities for water sports. You can try the adventure trail. When the weather is bad you can play table tennis and squash indoors. For more information please phone J PROJECT Work in pairs. You want to organise a sports camp. 7 80 L ADVENTURE HOLIDAY CENTRE The children decided to walk along a night adventure trail. Read the instructions. What did they need? Don t go over the rope bridge. Go down and look for a big grey stone. There s an arrow on it pointing west. Go west as far as a brick wall. Find your group leader. He s got a letter for you. Climb up the wall. Come down carefully, there s a small pond on the other side. Go to the hill with the rope bridge. There s a big oak tree with an old nest in it. You can find the next letter there. Go round the pond. The strongest swimmer Johnny Weismüller (the USA) won 3 swimming gold medals at the 1924 Paris Olympics. Later he became very famous he played the first Tarzan in films. The fastest cyclist In 1896 Aristidis Konstantinidis, a Greek cyclist crashed at full speed into a brick wall. He borrowed a bike from a sports fan... and went on to win. She lives and goes to school in Veszprém but every day she takes the coach to Balatonfûzfô. In the morning, when she puts her books in her bag, she doesn t forget her swimsuit and swimming cap. After school I have lunch quickly, then I walk to the station and take the 2 o clock coach to Fûzfô. I swim from 3 o clock to 5 o clock. I m lucky. Mum works at a school in Fûzfô. She is a teacher. We can travel home together. I do my homework after 6 o clock. I always read before going to bed. S She learnt to swim when she was 3 years old. Later she wanted to be a swimmer because she loves water. She likes going to the swimming pool. She thinks swimming is healthy and relaxing. Talk about Virág s day. 12 85 W Read Jessica s letter to her Veszprém friend about Challenge Day. How many points did they get? We met at 7 o clock in the morning and went jogging for half an hour. Then Harald and Anton cut the grass in front of the school. I swept up the classroom. It took 20 minutes. At 8 o clock we had PE. Everybody played volleyball for 45 minutes. In the breaks we played table tennis, Eila and Igor played badminton. So we collected three more points. After school Mark organised a baseball match for the boys. It lasted 2 hours. The girls weren t interested so we went to the fitness centre between 3 and 5. We met again at 6 o clock. We wanted to have the best score at school so we decided to go to the swimming pool by bike. We stayed there for one and a half hours. We cycled home it took 15 minutes tired but happy. Everybody did a 15-minute aerobics programme at home before going to bed. We hope we ll win!
