This was game that should have been won after the fine start with two goals and a point from Fionan Duffy after Ballinrobe s Joe Burke opened the scoring with a point in the opening five minutes. After that explosive five minutes, Ballinrobes Kenneth O Malley with two points, Dave Killeen and James Quinn, Crossmolinas Stephen Duffy Fionan Duffy and Brian Benson replied with points. As a game that had been nip and tuck all the way entered injury time with the teams deadlocked, a veteran Deel Rover stepped up to do the necessary and kick the winning score. PeadarGardiners late winner conjured up memories of a remarkably similar point six years ago to win the 2009 Connacht finalagainst Galway. Crossmolina had the better of the opening quarter, after falling behind they hit the next four points to take a three point lead. Brian Benson opened the account, Sean Kelly then added two before Kevin Mulhern got the fourth. Aghamore reduced the deficit to a single point and left the halftimescore 0-03 to After the break Cathal Freeman pointed and Finaun Duffy responded for Cross. Both teams then lost a man to the notorious Black Card. Cathal Freeman levelled things with a point before a fisted point from Finaun Duffy gave Cross the edge. Alan Freeman pointed and a Fergal Boland point on 55 mins gave the hosts a one point advantage. 60 seconds later Finaun Duffy won a hard earned free, which Conor Loftus duly dispatched. All square, time up. One last mighty effort saw Finaun Duffy earn another free, and his quick thinking set up Peadar Gardiner for the match winning score. This score line does not tell a true account of the opening 30 minutes, Crossmolina had far greater share of the possession but poor shot selection and a belief that the breeze would guide the ball over the bar saw the home side shoot eleven wides and couple of shots into the goalkeeper s hands. Few in the large home crowd could see their side turn this lead around considering the breeze freshened up but there is no substitute for hard work and a will to win. Further points from Shane McKinley and Colm McDonnell gave the winners a two points advantage with ten minutes still to play.
