5 I Believe in the FFA # FFA After seventy-five years, the Lexington FFA Chapter is still going strong. Consisting of thirty-four students, the Chapter is working hard to accomplish their goals and learn the most they can with the help of their advisor, Whitney Davis. This year, the FFA Chapter was given the opportunity to instate renovations on the greenhouse. Before the renovation, the greenhouse was low to the ground, had more weeds than plants, and had no cooling system. After lots of hard work and determination, the greenhouse can now boast cleanliness and organization, along with a new cooling system and more workspace. Makenzie Hammond described the benefits: "The new greenhouse helps us learn about plants and how they grow." Thanks to the new greenhouse, the Chapter was able to sell some of the produce that was grown in it, and was also able to rent out growing space to those who would like to grow their own plants in the greenhouse. The greenhouse is not the only exciting thing about FFA this year. Over two-thirds of this year's Chapter went to State FFA for various events; this is a huge accomplishment, especially since almost everybody earned a ribbon. FFA is beneficial to those who participate. Erik Lemus said, "Being in FFA can be more beneficial than anything else because it shows you how to work hard, and nothing is ever easy." A major event that the FFA Chapter participated in this year was National FFA. Although nobody from the Chapter qualified to compete at nationals, five students went to Indianapolis, Indiana to support teams from Nebraska. Jose Tecla had this to say about National FFA, "It was breathtaking to see how many members there are in this organization nationally, and that wasn't even Color Gaurd everybody!" FFA Advisor, Whitney Davis said there were about 25,000 students at the competition. This year's inducted senior officers are all juniors and there is not a single new officer who has previously held an office.the FFA considers this year and next year "rebuilding years." The Chapter is rebuilding by adding members and trying to become more known in the community. They are doing numerous community activities such as the previously stated Greenhouse Sale, Community Garden, Children's Garden, AgFest, Baby Animal Day and more. Doing those services put the Chapter on the radio, in the newspaper, and it became something people would talk about more. 8 Defeat Does Not Define # At the beginning of the football season, the Minutemen Football Team was hungry for excellence. You could see it in the hardwork they put in during practices. In the sluggish walks after practice, with helmits in hand, from the field all the way to the locker room, only to repeat the same process all over again the next day. They felt that the only way to have a good season was to work for it. A highlight in the season was the Lexington versus McCook game. The game demonstrated to the team, that when they work as one, they can achieve big accomplishments. The entire team fought exceedingly hard throughout the game. "We had the motivation to play our hardest because we were the underdogs. People thought we were going to get destroyed because McCook was a division I class B school. We had a very positive attitude," stated senior, Jose Muniz. The final score for this game was at 13-16, but losing wasn't the end for September 30 Seward October 7 McCook Record Does Not Channel Fundamental Success October 14 Holdredge the Minutemen. "It was frustrating because of all the chances we had to win, and it would've been a great win for our team. It just hurt because it just came down to one last field goal to win. It did feel good though, being able to say that we took on the number two team in double overtime," stated junior Danny Ibarra. Victory, only being a field goal away, was hopefully a wakeup call for the Minutemen to try harder for the next football season. Head football coach, Phil Truax, announced he will not be coming back next season to coach the team. He will be very much missed by everyone. Overall, the team had an excellent season in both mental and physical aspects, which set the bar high for next years football team to meet these expectations.
