5 Battle Lines Drawn Seniors Sweep the Classes Homecoming week was filled with competition leading up to Friday s football game against Alliance. The week started off with each class wearing a specific color. The colors distinguished the classes teams. During the dodgeball game that evening, the seniors ended up winning. By winning tugof-war, the juniors found inspiration to participate in the remaining events of that week. The following day, the students dressed up as Disney characters and played in a volleyball 8 Homecoming "Having played the games one last time with my classmates was very special" 1. tournament against each other. "I performed well but I can't be satisfied with well, there is lots to work on," said DeSantiago. photos by Corby Dorsey A Step Ahead Leading the chase, senior Ana Hernandez stays ahead of her teammate, Yailin Santoyo. Hernandez was the only senior girl on the team. "I felt I had to step up and become a leader and lead the girls through the season," said Hernandez. WHERE'S MY HAIRSPRAY? Hair in the air, freshman Cecilia Rios races toward the finish line. As a freshman, Rios' personal best for the 5K was 21:31:00. "I don't know what it is, but I just love running. I'll be tired while running in a race, but at the end I always just want to run. I love it," said Rios. ELBOW ROOM On pace with his competition, junior Policarpio Calmo stays with his Gering opponet. Calmo helped his team with a 33rd place finish."i will lead with my mind [and] heart and [my] body will follow," said Calmo. 40 Cross Country "Pre-Season is always really hard. Its a lot of conditioning and getting back into the running routine. A lot of time people had to work so they didn't make it to practice. Without them there the team isn't as successful because you need someone there to push you to get better." junior Zury Aguirre. "This cross country season was one of the most unique seasons I have been apart of. We only had five boy varsity runners and only two returning runners from last year to overcome a lot of adversity. In the end, each of us came together as a family to finish strong as a team at state. It was also incredible to achieve my goal of medaling at state with a ninth place finish." Chandler Flynn EYES ON THE PRIZE At the State Meet, junior Ruby Gomez moves to get ahead of the competition. In her second year on the team, Gomez's personal best was 21:29."Running at state was hard because I tripped in the beginning but then I just kept going," said Gomez. "It was nice to see Ruby stay committed throughout the season and it was also really great to see her be successful." said head coach Sam Jilka. photo by: Paul Pack ARMS IN MOTION On Oct. 24, senior Chandler Flynn continues his race at the State Cross Country Championship in Kearney.Flynn finished his last high school meet in 9th place."it's not the achievement of the dream that matters most, but rather the pursuit of those dreams that are born within us." said Flynn. FIRST APPEARANCE On route, junior Bianca Hernandez strides in the direction of the finish line. This was Hernandez's first year competing at state. "My mentality changed towards working harder towards what I want to achieve," said Hernandez. THUMBS UP On the course, junior John Mark Shields continues the race. Shields placed 10th at the State Meet and is a three time letter winner. "Each year it is a new team and a new family. We experienced heartache, growth, fun, and joy," said Shields.
