November 29, 2016 THE TIGER TRIBUNE I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : School News 1 News 2 News/Sports 3 Sports 4 Sports/Opinion 5 Opinion 6 L O C K W O O D POLL F AV O R S TR U M P B Y W ILL B E E R L Y On October 27th, 12 days before the nation will cast its ballots, the students of Lockwood High School participated in a poll on who they would want to be their next president. All of the students were polled, and the results did not leave a doubt on where their support lied. We will wait and see whether or not Trump's success at Lockwood High School correlates to success at the national level. A Local Study Shows a Neotenic Preference When It Comes to Superheroes All superheroes are different. Students at Lockwood High School have come to the conclusion that Marvel superheroes appear more childlike, while DC superheroes appear more adult-like. To determine this, students used neotenic traits such as head size, eye size, face shape, defined jawline, and amount of facial hair. Neoteny is retaining physical traits from your childhood that did not change as you went into adulthood. In girls, the profile flattening is less dramatic because, although all the changes in the soft tissue are similar, they are less in magnitude than those in boys, and the average backward rotation mitigates the flattening. One way to determine if your favorite superhero is neotenic is by their amount of facial hair. -Continued on Page 2

Page 2 Continued from Page 1 If they don t have facial hair, that is more of a neotenic feature. Typically, children don t have hair on their body. For example, Spiderman, Superman, and Batman don t have any body hair. You can also determine if your favorite superhero is neotenic by their forehead size. If they have a large forehead, that is more of a neotenic trait. One way to measure is to horizontally align your four fingers (all but your thumb) across your forehead. If you have extra room outside of your four fingers, you have a neotenic feature. Some students have weighed in on what they like, including Junior Logan Sparkman who said, If you are a guy you probably would prefer a woman with neotenic features. I personally am that way; I m just not attracted to women with big arms and legs and facial hair. That s just me, but I m not going to judge. I prefer my women to have more neotenic (child-like) features. In Mrs. Jones's class, students use student handbooks to create constitutions By Tyler Aldridge The path to the future is paved by us. In Mrs. Jones s Government class, students are given the Lockwood High School handbook and are making a constitution out of it to show how they would structure the school. This could end up a fun and exciting experiment; as a guide, they can use the U.S. Constitution and our school handbook. They can add or change amendments however they choose. This project sounds fun and interesting. Students created preambles of their goal for the constitutions. Then, the next articles connected parts of the school to government branches; for example, the Legislative branch compares to the student senate, the Judicial branch equals the Student Council, and the Executive branch equals the superintendent and/or principal. The next student created rules to better the school. One student exempted finals for anyone with over 95% in their grades. These creative constitutions are waiting for ratification, but only one will be ratified. The team who gets ratified wins a pizza party. Halloween Safety at the Trunk-or-Treat By Tyler Aldridge At this year s Trunk or Treat, people had a blast going car to car trick or treating. Trunk or Treat was created a few years ago as a safer way to trick or treat. Continued on Page 3

The Tiger Tribune Page 3 Every year people and their vehicles gather by the Methodist Church with candy and allow kids to trick-or-treat. This method creates a safer trick-or-treating experience because children aren t crossing the street or trick or treating in unfamiliar neighborhoods. This, along with the trick-or-treat hayride, is used to make an enjoyable, but secure, trick or treating experience. In other news Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton came to Lockwood on Oct. 31, 2016, and were seen partaking in the Trunk or Treat fun. Oh Deer The Missouri firearm season started on November 12th during the sunrise. It is said that opening weekend was a success as they say 96,131 deer were harvested during the opening week. Over 55,000 of those deer killed were antlered bucks and over 31,500 were does. The amount killed this opening weekend was slightly above the number of the amount killed last year. The Monday after opening weekend the total of deer killed rose to 100,777 deer. With only two weeks of the season the numbers should be sky rocketing. Deer season is one of the biggest things that goes on in the State of Missouri. It's a tradition that has been in most families for generations. That is how the 2016 Missouri Firearms season is going so far. Sports Section On Friday, October 28th, 2016, the Lockwood Tigers faced off against the Adrian Blackhawks in a district semifinal showdown. The Tigers started off a little slow as the Blackhawks scored first to make it a 7-0 lead. The Tigers finally scored towards the end of the second quarter. At Black Hawk Down halftime, the score of the game was tied at 7-7. The Tigers are known to be a second half team, and that's just what they did. The 3rd quarter was scoreless by both teams, but early in the fourth, the Tigers scored to make it Towards the end of the fourth quarter, they scored again to make it That score stayed the same the rest of the game which called for a Tiger victory. The Tigers will be travelling to Cass-Midway on Friday, November 4th, for the District Championship game. The future does not fit in containers of the past. Season Finale The Tigers travelled to Cleveland, Missouri on Friday, November 4th, for the District Championship game against Cass Midway. The Tigers came into the game fired up and ready to play. The seniors were not ready for their final season to be over with. Continued on Page 4

Page 4 The Tigers came out and played hard in the first quarter, with a tied 7-7 score going into the second quarter. The second quarter was another classic; the score going into halftime was 21-14, with Midway ahead. The Tigers came back from halftime and seemed as if they were ready to play. Cass Midway s coach must have said something to his players because the Vikings came out and played an amazing 3rd quarter. The score at the end of the 3rd quarter was Midway 42, Lockwood 14. The final score at the end of the 4th quarter was with Cass Midway on top. It was an emotional night for the Tiger seniors, most of them will never step on another football field again as players. It was an amazing season and the town and community is looking forward to next season. Lockwood Lady Tigers vs New Haven If not us, who? If not now, when? The Lockwood Tigers played for the sectional championship on October 22, 2016, against a very good New Haven team. The Tigers came out of the gate hard and played very well against the powerhouse New Haven team. The Tigers stayed with them for a little while until New Haven sealed the first set with a score of The second set was a little more exciting with Lockwood leading some of the game, but New Haven took that set too, with the score being The Lady Tigers volleyball team had accomplished so much this season including a District championship. The Lady Tigers will be strong next year as they will only lose two seniors. Congrats on one heck of a season Lady Tigers. Boys Basketball Preview By Will Beerly Football pads and gear have been turned in, and it is now time for basketball season. With only a couple weeks for the Tigers to get ready for their opening game Friday the 18th, the defending conference champs have a lot of work to do. 3rd year coach Aaron Shockley had this to say about the coming weeks leading up to the first game, We need to come in, work hard, and have good attitudes every day if we want to achieve the goals we set for this season. I feel this group has a lot of potential, if they can come together as a team and play as one. When asked about what he wanted to accomplish in his senior season, Brady Waters quoted the late, great Al Davis by saying, Just win baby The Tigers first tip off Friday, November 18th, against the Dadeville Bearcats.

Girls Basketball Preview The Lady Tigers are going from a tremendous volleyball season to what looks to be a solid-looking basketball season. The Lady Tigers lost literally nobody from last year s season and are looking to be a pretty solid contender in the SRVC. The Lady Tigers have two seniors this year, and they are Noble Foster and Olivia Nentrup. Noble had a minor surgery before the start of the season but should be ready to go in a few weeks. The Tigers are 2A this year and are ready to make a run at the SRVC crown. The Lady Tigers first game will be Friday, November 17th, at Dadeville High School. Tigers Drub the Bearcats in Opener Find editions at lockwoodschools.org! The Tigers got off to a hot start in their first game of the season. They cruised to a victory over the Dadeville Bearcats. With it being the first game, there were areas that the Tigers Veterans Day Editorials Veterans Day By Will Beerly needed to improve in. Coach Shockley said this about the boys performance, I m happy with our effort, but there are some fundamentals we need to improve on moving forward. Junior Cade Holman, first team all conference guard a year ago, had a standout performance scoring 19 points for the Tigers. The Tigers will have a break before their next game. They start back up December 1st, at our home tournament the Dennis Cornish Classic. See what the Tiger Tribune staff has to say about the Veterans Day assembly, as well as the importance of this special day. Friday, November 11th. It is a special day to many, including me. At Lockwood High School we had our annual Veterans Day assembly. Many people gathered, including students, people within the community, and most importantly veterans. The assembly was very well done. From the musical numbers put on by Mr. McKinney to my favorite part, the video made by Mrs. Allison s Computer Applications class, it was very well made and touching. I m not going to lie, I teared up a little bit. I thought those who put on the assembly did an amazing job of honoring our Veterans. Once again, I m very proud to be a Lockwood Tiger. Remembering Veterans By Tyler Aldridge Every year on November 11th, America celebrates Veterans Day. Everyone has their own yearly traditions for Veterans Day; our school chooses to host an assembly. Continued on Page 6

Page 6 -Continued from Page 5 At the beginning of the assembly, the Lockwood choir sung our national anthem. Then, we recognized every single veteran there. Finally, the band played Armed Forces on Parade, a medley of many military themes including Anchors Away, The Caisson Song, Marine Hymn, and the Air Force Song. Veterans Day is a day to not only thank veterans, but to try to understand the courage it took for the brave men and women of our armed forces to leave home and to fight for their country. What I ll never understand is why innocent people have to fight and die when countries wage war, but I m glad that our veterans answer the call despite the tremendous sacrifices they make. On Veterans Day, you should thank veterans for their service and for the freedoms we take for granted. Veterans Day If not us, who? If not now, when? The Lockwood High School had an assembly over the wonderful day known as Veterans Day. At the assembly, we had student speakers talking about what veterans mean to us. We had a video that had recording of what people thought the words bravery and patriotism meant to them. They were also asked what they thought a veteran meant to them. We had the choir singing and the band playing as well. The assembly went very well, and I thought it was well planned and thoughtful. Veterans day is, in my opinion, one of the best holidays. It represents how we got the freedom that we as Americans are blessed with today. Thank you to the American veterans; you are greatly appreciated.
