Recently, our school chose a new superintendent. In order to be qualified for this position, an applicant must have a master s degree that allows them to teach, have been a teacher and principal for a certain amount of years, and must fill out a resume. Afterward, five resumes are chosen and applicants are interviewed; next year, our superintendent will be Mr. Lasater, B Y T Y L E R A L D R I D G E Future Lockwood R-1 Superintendent, Mr. Lasater the current high school principal. The board meeting to hire a new principal will be the last week of February. We have yet to see who it will be. Lockwood High School Students Get Reward for Attendance On Friday, January the 20th, Lockwood allowed students who did not miss at least three school days during the quarter to go to on a field trip to watch a movie. It was a delightful trip and worth going to. The movie that was chosen was The Giver and is based on a book by Louis Lowery. It takes place on a flying island where nobody can see color, everyone must take morning injections every day, and it is ruled by an extreme government where 80% of life aspects are regulated. Every year at graduation, the recent graduates have jobs assigned to them. Jonas is chosen to be the receiver, which is the most important job. From then on, it s up to Jonas to escape the island and save his people from their curse. The students had a great time watching the movie. Hopefully, we will do the same next year.

2 Page 2 Volume 5, Issue 5 We have decided to interview the Lockwood cheerleaders and feature them in the school newspaper. This week, you will be learning about one of the junior cheerleaders, Rachel Schnelle. Cheerleader Feature: Rachel Schnelle Rachel was born on December 20th, 1999, at St. John s Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Rachel has two siblings, Ben, her older brother, and Katie, her younger sister. Rachel's parents are Mary Mr. Rockwood s Anatomy Class Assisting in Mock Trial and Eric Schnelle. Rachel has been cheering for 3 years, not cheering in middle school, but starting as a freshman. Rachel will be a senior next year and a hopeful for the captain of the cheer team. The path to the future is paved by us. Mr. Rockwood s anatomy class is simulating an autopsy report for the mock trial assignment in Mrs. Jones s Street Law class; it is a very important part of the courtroom and can make or break any case. Students will need to know medical terms and common brain injuries, as well as the procedure for brain dissection. The assignment is worth 25 points and serves as real life application. More on the investigation and trial to come. Sports Section Tigers Fall in Anticipated Homecoming Bout Junior Brady Oeltjen blocking out as a Greenfield player takes a shot. On January 27, the Tiger faced their fierce rival, the Greenfield Wildcats. This game had a lot of hype and was perceived by many as a big game in the conference landscape. This game, unfortunately, did not live up to the billing. The visiting Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and never let the underdog Tigers back into it. The Wildcats cruised to a 24- point victory, with the final being This game cemented Greenfield as the top contender in the SRVC. The Tigers will have a chance to bounce back quickly as they play Dadeville tomorrow for third place in the Golden City Tournament. Tigers Stumble to a Relatively Unknown Opponent On Saturday, February 4th, our Tigers fell by a score of to the Eminence Red Wings.-Continued on Page 3

3 The Tiger Tribune Page 3 The game was held at a neutral site, the home court of the Drury Panthers in Springfield, Missouri. This was a very cool experience for all of the players involved. Senior Dalton Manke said this about the venue, It s big. The Tigers will look to get back in the win column with a trip to Miller set next for Tuesday, February 7th. On February 14th, our Tigers faced off against the visiting Liberal Bulldogs. The game might have been played on Valentine's Day, but there was no love between these two teams which had met once Tigers Win One for the Seniors before this season. The Tigers ended up on the short end of the stick in that game. The Tigers proved to be on a mission jumping out to an early lead. Junior Cade Holman got the Tigers going with some early buckets. The Tigers Lockwood Wins Districts kept this momentum and headed to the half with a ten point lead. Lockwood struggled from the line down the stretch, but narrowly escaped with a win. This game was the last on the home court for the four seniors, Will Beerly, Brady Waters, Ethan Bates, and Dalton Manke. This past Saturday, February 25th, Lockwood topped the Adrian Blackhawks to bring home the program's first district title since The Tigers dominated from start to finish and eclipsed the Blackhawks by a margin of 19 with a victory. Recently, the Tigers have come close to mounting this feat. They have played in the championship game each of the last three seasons. This year, no team could spoil their parade. It was easy to tell the Tigers were on a mission. I asked Coach Shockley his thoughts about this team and their accomplishment: They bought in and believed they could do it, and they did. I am so proud of this group. Cade Holman kept his great district performances going with a 23 point outing, leading all scorers and propelling the Tigers to victory. The Tigers will play in Clinton Wednesday, March 1st, for the sectional championship against Sacred Heart. Go Tigers! Lady Tigers Face Off Against Jasper Eagles Senior Ethan Bates goes up for a score against the Blackhawks. The Lockwood Tigers headed to Jasper to take on the Eagles. The Jasper Eagles did not want to lose a game on their Senior Night, but the Tigers didn't want to lose to a fellow conference opponent. Jasper played tough and never let up; it was a pretty rough and physical game, senior Noble Foster said. The final score to the game was , with Lockwood ending up as the victor. Rylee Neill had 22 points and Noble Foster had 20 points.

4 Page 4 Volume 5, Issue 5 Tiger Golf Preview This coming spring, Lockwood High School will be introducing a new sports program, with that sport being golf. There s a lot of buzz around the school, and I went around to see what it's all about. Sophomore Roy Snider was asked about the golf team, and he said, I m looking forward to repping my city out on the links next year. He sounds pumped. In a sit down with coach to be Jim Scott, he expressed his thoughts about this opportunity, saying, It ll be fun to take on this challenge with this great group of kids. The golf team will tee it up on the 20th of Monett. Hit em straight! Lockwood Tigers Baseball Preview The Lockwood Tigers are looking to have another fantastic season, just like the one they had last season. The Tigers won a district title and finished the season with a record of The Tigers did lose 7 seniors as well, including ace pitcher Ben Schnelle, who paved the way for the Tigers last year. The Tigers will have some struggles early on fighting some injury and also bumping up to class 2. The team also welcomes a new head coach, Jonathan Nash, the assistant baseball coach from last season. With the pieces we have and the work our players are willing to bring, we're going to be able to accomplish our goals, Coach Nash said. Some returning and new players are going to have to step into some very big shoes after last year s tremendous season. Track Season is Coming Up The 2017 Lockwood High School track season is quickly approaching. In addition to the track events, such as the 100 meter, the 100 meter hurdles, 400 meter, and the mile, Lockwood s program includes long jump, triple jump, shot put, and discus. Recently, the track program has added a new event, the javelin, which at the moment is only allowed for juniors and seniors. It has brought some excitement from members of the track team interested in trying out for the event. It seems this season is starting on a high note already. Track meets will begin later in March. Opinion School Begins Stricter Cell Phone Policy See what the Tiger Tribune staff have to say about a variety of topics in our opinion section. At the beginning of this month, I and many others have noticed a more rigorous enforcement of the no cell phones during class policy. I assume this change has come from the top during the monthly staff meeting. I reached out to several student to get some feedback on the change. Their responses were pretty much unanimous in agreement with the changes made. They cited reasons such as the ability to focus and the overall involvement in the classroom has went up since the change.-continued on Page 5

5 I view the changes in the same light. If they help the learning process for all students, then why not? Find editions at lockwoodschools.org! My Brother s Keeper Having a sibling is not something I would recommend if you want to feel superior. Chances are, if you have a sibling, you will feel anything but superior. In my personal experience, I ve been bullied by my brother a lot; one side effect of this was that I use to be extremely sensitive, which made me look like a weakling and resulted in being bullied at school too. My brother honestly did things that made me wonder how we ended up like we did; I have always been a fan of Power Rangers and Transformers, but my brother hates both of those franchises. So to be polite, I only watched them early in the morning when he was asleep. I have no idea how he got this impression, but he thought I had agreed that I was only allowed to watch my shows when he s asleep, but one day, I just sat back and watched Power Rangers on the TV while he was up. He couldn t do anything about it that didn t make him look mean. That day I gained back a lot of confidence I lost when he bullied me; from then on, I never let him be superior to me, but my description of this event made me realize why he was so mean to me; he also felt like Luigi from the game Super Mario. Both of us thought the other brother was the Alpha Brother. Boy, were we wrong. I guess the moral of the story is siblings aren t good or bad; you may need them one day. Flagball American football has been in this country for about 100 years, and the sport isn't going anywhere anytime soon. But, the rules may be changing. The rules, in my opinion, are getting softer and softer. It's so common to see a flag that, when one isn't thrown, you re surprised about it. I know they are trying to make the game safer and all, but it's almost like it's not even football anymore. I m not saying don't throw flags for things that are clearly a penalty like offsides or jumping the snap. What I m talking about are the big hits; why call a penalty for laying somebody out? What happened to good, hard-nosed football? Honestly, the game is changing whether we like it or not, but that's just my opinion on it all.
