It was released in theaters on July 21st, and debuted as the number-one film in the world. Famed British director Christopher Nolan took on the telling of the infamous Miracle of Dunkirk from World War Two. At CinemaSalem to see Dunkirk It s not your typical war movie. It s not chock-full of blood and guts and gore. It focuses more on the human aspect of survival and the spirit of a nation. A small history lesson: The Allied soldiers from the British Empire, Belgium and France were all stranded and surrounded on the beach of Dunkirk, while the Germans had begun to attack said Allied forces on said beach from the air. Word was sent to the civilians of the British Empire for those who owned boats and ships to sail across the English Channel to rescue the soldiers. And sail they did. Civilians sailed through the treacherous waters to reach the Dunkirk Beach and managed to rescue and save over 300,000 of the 400,000 stranded soldiers. Hence the often-used term, The Miracle of Dunkirk. For this special film, we had an extra-special offer for our community s veterans, Richard, Leo and Leonard. We treated them to this movie for free. One of our veterans, Leonard, who was in The Battle of the Bulge, said of the film, I thought the movie accurately portrayed the tenacity and bravery of the English people of the time.
Decorative Painting with Bobbi Want to join in on an Art Class but fear that you lack the skill? No problem! We have exactly the class for you! Resident Bobbi Hendee teaches an art class called Decorative Painting or folk art, which is the perfect place to start. Can t even draw a stick figure? Not a worry, this class is not about becoming an artisan, it s about adding your own unique and personal touches to already pre-made items. Bobbi acquires many different types of wooden crafts, and those who attend the class are able to select one to decorate. But fear not, Bobbi is there to assist you in every step of the way! She offers advice, shows previous examples and samples, and can show you the little simple techniques that go a long way! So come on down to the Activity Room on Monday morning at 10 a.m. and see what it s really all about! Smoothies: Both Nutritious and Delicious! On a Thursday in August, we had a woman named Bonnie who s from Private Home Health come in to tell us all about smoothies, nutrition and how what we eat affects our brains. First, she made some smoothies for us all. Two, in fact! One was chocolate and banana, the other was triple berry and vanilla. Both, as we all can attest, were scrumptious! The ingredients seemed simple. A protein powder either chocolate or vanilla some almond milk, and whichever fruit you ve gone with to add in. Fresh fruit is best. You can add some ice to it to make it more of a frozen drink. After we all tasted and enjoyed our sample of each smoothie, Bonnie began her presentation on the benefits of nutrition for our brain. And just as everything we eat affects our body, it affects our brain as well. Cheers! Yummy ingredients A sample work Bonnie teaching us about nutrition and our brain Taste test approved
Calling All Bridge Players! Have you recently moved into our community and are an avid card player looking for something to do in the afternoon? Well, look no further! We have a Bridge group that meets every Monday at 2 p.m. in the Card Room on the Second Floor. So come on down and join in! Again, that s every Monday at 2 p.m. in the Card Room on the Second Floor. We play till 4 p.m. We look forward to seeing you! Skip and Barbara Return! Have you been missing your weekly Bible Class? Well, the wait is over because as of this month, September, both Skip and Barbara are back to lead the class! Join me in welcoming them back to Colonial Gardens and asking how their well-deserved and earned vacation went. Skip and Barbara s Bible Class returns to its usual designated day and time, which is Tuesdays at 10 a.m. The class is held in the Conference Room on the Second Floor. Enjoy Spelling Games? Come Play Quiddler! You may be asking yourself, What is Quiddler? You may have heard Maggie mention this in the announcements or seen it posted around on the bulletin boards. If you like Scrabble and card games, this is the game for you! It s a card game, but instead of cards with numbers, the cards have letters. Players compete by spelling English words from cards in hands of increasing size, each card worth various points. The game combines aspects of Scrabble and gin rummy. So, if that piques your interest, stop on by the Fireplace in the Dining Room on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. and Fridays at 3 p.m. We d love to teach you how to play! National Grandparents Day It is only right and fitting that one day of the year is set aside to honor grandparents. It is time to celebrate those special people who are always there with a hug, a kiss, a cookie or something extra special. Did you know that National Grandparents Day originated in 1978? Then President Jimmy Carter declared it to be the first Sunday after Labor Day. It s been a tradition ever since. So to all residents here at Colonial Gardens, Happy Grandparents Day!

Singing the Afternoon Away We had ourselves some Karaoke on a Friday in August. There were snacks, singing and lots of encouragement from those in attendance. Residents braved the microphone and belted out their favorite tunes!
Good Neighbor Day Ah, Good Neighbor Day. Which is celebrated every 28th of September. It s definitely a good thing. Being a good neighbor is an important part of the social fiber that makes all communities great. Therefore, it seems only fitting that one day a year honors our good neighbors! A little history and background on this happy holiday: In the early 1970s, Mrs. Becky Mattson from Lakeside, Mont. recognized the importance of good neighbors and started the effort to make this a national day. With the help of congressman Mike Mansfield, she succeed in getting three presidents (Nixon, Ford, and Carter) to issue proclamations, along with numerous governors. In 2003, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution, sponsored by Montana Senator Max Baucus, making September 28th National Good Neighbor Day. Previously, this day was celebrated on the fourth Sunday of September. To be clear, this day of recognition is not to be confused with other forms of Good Neighbor Days. Stores proclaim Good Neighbor Days to promote sales, a wide range of organizations announce Good Neighbor Days to promote their causes, and local municipalities and governments proclaim Good Neighbor Days for a variety of reasons. Rather, this day is to truly recognize and appreciate your good neighbor. Hopefully, one of those good neighbors is you! I can say with confidence I have seen many good neighbors here at Colonial Gardens. I have seen people press the elevator button for a neighbor, seen someone pick up an item such as a pair of keys someone has dropped and either returned it to the owner, or brought it to the front office so it could be delivered to the proper owner. I have seen neighbors offer their assistance to those struggling with completing a task. I have had my neighbors here assist me in cleaning up after an activity without me asking them to do so. These little acts of kindness may seem small, but are infectious and when many people perform these little acts, it makes the community a brighter place. Happy Good Neighbor Day, neighbors!
