1 The Word THE BEST FROM EVERYONE, ALL OF THE TIME 10 TH NOVEMBER 2017 Headteacher s Round Up We observed two minutes silence today at am in order to remember all those who have lost their lives in conflict. Mr Brookes has led very poignant assemblies this week, with remembrance as their theme. Years 8 and 10 have completed their studies about living in the wider world this week as part of their learning for PSHE. Evaluations of the work done by all of our students on this theme have been very positive. Health and Safety Reminder We would be grateful if parents could reinforce the dangers of running around with pointed objects such as pens and pencils in pockets. Pens and pencils are best carried in an appropriate pencil case in an appropriate bag. As per the uniform policy, earrings must be removed for P.E. Plea from the English Department Thank you from Ms Latham for all the second hand books that have been donated to school. More are still needed so if you are having a clear out before Christmas, please feel free to send unwanted books to G204 We are all looking forward to Spotacular next week in support of Children in Need. More details are available later on in The Word. Well done to everyone for such a productive week, I have seen some excellent work in all the classes I have visited. Have you had any thoughts about where you would like to go, or what you are interested in doing? Around the world, week commencing 13 th November is Global Entrepreneurship Week, the aim is to get people thinking about entrepreneurship, and celebrate everyone from sole traders to the large corporate firms, created and run by the likes of Richard Branson at Virgin. What is an entrepreneur? Definition - a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit. Example - many entrepreneurs see potential in this market. Entrepreneurs fuel economic growth, by creating jobs and improving communities through the creation of new products and services. But in the UK, although around onethird of the adult population say that they would like to set up their own business, only 7% ever do. Have a think about why, and what could we do to increase that number? Key questions: Have you thought about your next steps? Could you be an entrepreneur? What decisions have you got to make and how do you make decisions?

3 Sports Hall External Refurbishment The school has been successful in securing some funding to replace the roof and external cladding on the sports hall. The work will commence on the 11 th December and the hall will be closed until the end of February. This work is the first phase of improvements required in the sports hall. We will be bidding again next year for the internal work to replace the heating system, install LED lighting, new floor and decoration throughout. There is no guarantee this funding will be secured, however, we are hoping that now the money has been invested in improving the external parts of the building, the internal funding will follow. Alternative arrangements have been made for the PE curriculum during this time. Rugby success for Year 8 On Friday 3 rd November, the year 8 rugby team was invited to take part in a rugby session by the Wasps Coaching team, along with five other local schools at Camp Hill Rugby Club. Paul Sackey, a former Wasps player was in attendance, and helped lead a 30 minute coaching session with the teams. The Light Hall team then played 2 games of 10 minutes, drawing the first game 2-2, and winning the second game 6-0, with all the points in the second game being scored through tries. To end the session Toby H and Casey B were picked as the two best players on the day by the Wasps team. Well done, and we look forward to hearing of more success. On Friday 17th November, Light Hall School is going SPOTACULAR in support of the Annual Children in Need Appeal. Now a regular feature of our calendar, the BBC s Children in Need Appeal is an opportunity for us to take a moment to come together as a community to help those less fortunate than us. these! However, could we please remind students and their parents that core school uniform must be worn and students are not permitted face paint nor coloured hair. No hoodies are to be worn either. We look forward to building on the success of last year s appeal and encourage everyone to take part in the SPOTACULAR fun. Students are invited to bring along 50p and wear a spotty accessory for the day, Friday 17 th, with all monies raised being donated to the appeal. Students have been informed already and there will be notices in weekly form PowerPoints and also in House Assemblies next week. Examples of accessories that pupils might wear include belts, hats, scarves, ties, hair bands, tights, socks, brooches, nail paint/varnish, watches or a combination of

Students are expected to adhere to the uniform rules and present themselves smartly every day as they would in the world of work. SHOES We do appreciate that shoes can be an expensive item for parents to buy and we are therefore keen to ensure the correct version is purchased. Your child may tell you differently. Trainer type shoes are not permitted, nor are canvas pumps, trainers or mules. For girls, there should be no added bling in the form of glittery stones and studs. Shoes should be flat or with a minimal heel, sensible plain style. Black, clean and polished. Below are examples of shoes the school deems unacceptable. JEWELLERY & PIERCINGS A watch and one small plain metal stud in each pierced ear lobe are permitted. These must be removed for safety reasons during PE lessons. No large earrings, glass studs or stretchers. Only one plain stud per ear lobe is permitted for pupils with pierced ears. No other body piercings are allowed, or piercings covered with plasters. If your child is going to have their ears pierced please ensure this takes place at the beginning of the six week holiday so that pupils are able to remove earrings if requested without still undergoing the settling in period. MAKE-UP, NAIL VARNISH & FALSE EYE LASHES Make-up is inappropriate with school uniform and should not be worn. No nail varnish or false nails to be worn. False eyes lashes are unacceptable due to Health & Safety concerns. HAIRCUTS & ACCESSORIES Conventional hairstyle/colour. No coloured hair/stripes shaved in. Hair not be shorter than a No. 2. cut. Hair accessories must be functional, small and black.
