4 The Gill Wetter October 25, 2005 page 4 Saltwater Fishing Reports New Hanover County Wrightsville Beach Capt. Rick Bennett reports: Fishing this week has been heavily impacted by persistent northerly winds and then torrential rains. Some areas saw 12 inches of rain. The poor weather has limited boating and fishing activity, but as things settle back down, fall fishing should be in full swing. Inshore: Thus far this fall the red drum fishing has been outstanding. You can find the reds in the inlets, the ICW and the creeks. Best bait is live menhaden or finger mullet or fresh chunk bait (mullet) fished on a carolina rig. Flounder fishing while not as good as the reds, has been good as well. The best fishing has been in the inlets, the cut and the river. Sheepshead are biting around the bridge pilings along with a few black drum. Nearshore: High seas have limited ocean fishing. The spanish mackerel catches that have been so good all summer long are diminishing and being replaced by bluefish. Gray trout are biting at the nearshore reefs using live bait or jigging spoons. Got Pic s... Get Braggin Rights! Send us your big catch... photos@gillwetter.com Keep your eye out for our official Gill Wetter merchandise coming soon Pocket T s Golf Shirts Hats Offshore: King mackerel are biting in the 10 mile areas. Live bait is typically best, but dead cigar minnow and /or ballyhoo will work also. Be sure to fish a downrigger so you can attract the big fish that are a bit deeper. Gulfstream: It s tuna time! Yellowfin and blackfin tuna are the main targets in the stream. Wahoo will add an interesting challenge to the mix. It s that time when mono leaders will catch more tuna, but wire is necessary for wahoo...take your chances or play it safe??? With the moderate temperatures we are experiencing look for fishing to be good and get better for a long fall season. For those of you looking for something fun to do this winter, please visit my website to see about my annual fishing school coming up March 4, Seating is limited so early registration is recommended. Let s Go Fishing!!! Gary Seine with a nice Black Drum caught with Capt. Rick Bennet of Rod-Man Charters. Cliff Mathews with a 4 lb. Red Drum relaxing on his day from fighting crime.

5 The Gill Wetter October 25, 2005 page 5 Saltwater Fishing Reports Brunswick County Oak Island - Southport Will, from Oak Island Sporting Goods reports the kings are still being caught near shore using live bait. the best areas have been the cape fear river channel from bald head island to the lighthouse rocks 1 & 2. kings are also being caught between the ocean crest pier and the lockwood folly inlet, with others being caught at ar425(yaupon reef). some nice trout are being caught on all of the oak island piers using, both live and artificial bait.red drum are making a nice showing in the intercoastal waterway and the southport waterfront using live and artificial baits near grass beds or your deeper holes. the southport waterfront has also seen flounder being caught using live bait and bucktail jigs. catches are being produced from the city pier all the way to snows cut. surf fishing is starting to pick up with spots and blues being caught on oak island between caswell beach lighthouse to 58th street in oak island. the oak island point is also producing some nice catches as well. the best bait would be bloodworms and shrimp for the spots, with cut mullet and plugs or jigs for the blues. 6 The Gill Wetter October 25, 2005 page 6 Saltwater Fishing Reports Brunswick County Ocean Isle - Holden Beach Barrett McMullan reports: Inshore report: As each tide passes the water continues to clear up from last week s downpour, which left both inshore and nearshore waters a tea brown color. Despite the less than perfect water clarity it is Fall and the fish are here. The red drum bite has been the best in recent memory going on now for over a month. Both size and number of fish caught have left inshore anglers scrambling for heavier gear. Capt. Stan Gurganus who runs his charter boat the Stori Teller out of the Ocean Isle Fishing Center explained that the technique of choice is pretty simple right now, put a mullet minnow on the bottom and hold on. The most recent hot spots for the drum have been the offshore tip of the Little River jetties, the Craven street intracoastal docks on Ocean Isle and the mouth of Shallotte inlet. In addition to the red drum a decent number of flounder are also around. With larger mullet minnows migrating in abundance right now it seems like there might not be as many flounder around as there are in Spring, but the one s that are being caught are much larger than average. One final note on the inshore fishing is that the spots have arrived as evidenced by the shoulder to shoulder pier fishing activity that can be seen on every pier along the North Carolina coast. Nearshore report: The same theme runs true for nearshore as it does for inshore fishing. Water clarity is a big issue. The rough seas and heavy rain that pounded us for a couple weeks has let up but we still are seeing its affect. Once again though, it is Fall time and the fish don t seem to be terribly concerned with the poor water clarity like they might be during other times of year. The pogies have arrived in full force off our beaches in the past week. From south Myrtle Beach all the way to the Cape Fear River and anywhere in between the pogies are here. In addition to the pogies, Fall mullets and spots are also migrating down the beach. The prevalence of bait nearshore has set off the dinner bell for the beach king mackerel bite. The best kingfish action seems to be closest to wherever the most bait is. In the past two weeks the most bait started up around the Cape Fear River and has slowly moved its way south and is currently holding at Shallotte inlet. The king mackerel have followed the same track. Fishing was great at the end of the Cape Fear River, then off of Lockwood inlet and now it is best off of Shallotte inlet. If you are going to focus your fishing day around certain times, it is important to watch the tides. When fishing close to shore for king mackerel the tide will effect when the kings are biting best. The best bites seem to be occurring around any tide change. Shallotte inlet, Shallotte ledge, Little River tideline and Myrtle Beach rocks are the places to be as of today. As the water continues to clear, expect a big concentration of kingfish to move into the 55 to 65 depth range as they always do this time of year. Besides the king mackerel, as I sit here typing I am flicking the grouper scales off the keypad. Capt. Brant McMullan, Rube McMullan, Amy McMullan and York Pharr crushed the grouper today in 75 of water off of Ocean Isle. They reported live pogies as the bait of choice and said the bite was on fire. This time of year king mackerel are not the only type of schooling fish, grouper will bunch up over ledges making them and easy target for experienced bottom fishermen. Offshore report: Most boats in this area are focusing on king mackerel fishing this time of year leaving us with little information on the Gulf Stream bite. A local Ocean Isle Beach boat the Crews Missile did venture out to the stream on Friday and fished from the Steeples south to the Black Jack hole and 100/400. They reported a decent bite of fish and encountered Yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dolphin, and released a sailfish. As the water temperature continues to cool the wahoo fishing should reach outright pandemonium phase soon. Capt. Brant McMullan s Showtime will be in the Gulf Stream at least one day this week so we will have a better report next week. 7 The Gill Wetter October 25, 2005 page 7 Saltwater Fishing Reports Pender County Surfcity - Topsail Hello folks Capt. David with this outdoors report.the recent strom dumped a lot of rain on us and it has slowed the bite and made it tough for us and the fish.the water is dirty and muddy but the fish are still here and will bite. The spots are here and are being caught on the pier and beaches. Reds are running the surf and a lot of slot size and overslot fish are being caught.there are some trout running the beach and flounder are biting as well.early morning and late evening are the best time for them. Some decent trout and drum are around the dredge dock on the south end and specks and flounder are at the swing bridge. Some folks at the park beside the swing bridge were tearing up the spots this weekend. I ve said it before and I ll say it again. GO FISHING!! Offshore has been rough lately and everyone who goes out comes back in because its just plain rough outside.one thing I would like to stress is safety and common sense. Check with the national weather service in Wilmington for a marine forecast and use your head. A small craft advisory or warning is for vessels 60ft and under. Look before committing to go out the inlet, if it looks bad it probably is! Breakers all the way across the inlet is a danger sign. Think! It s not worth the risk to you, your passengers,or your boat. If you dont have a marine radio, get one. You can get a good handheld for about a hundred bucks and the have a weather channel. If you re wondering why I m writing about this the local news had a story on a boat in Carolina beach inlet that capsized and one person was killed. Please be safe on the water,it could be my life or yours that we save. Capt. David - Headhunter Outdoors Got Pic s... Get Braggin Rights! 10 The Gill Wetter October 25, 2005 page 10 Hunting that Door Mat by Adam Burton The most frequent question asked to me at my Dad s bait and tackle shop would most definitely be, What s the best place to catch flounder and, what do I use? Well here s where it gets tricky. You want to give your customer the best advice, and not step on too many toes. I usually start with the realistic approach of letting them know that the information I m going to provide isn t written in stone. I usually approach the question asked by finding out if they are going to fish from the hill or take a boat ride. Sometimes that will affect the bait and tackle situation. If going out on the boat, you should go with at least two to three dozen mud minnows. Hook the mud minnow through the lips, if not you ll drown the minnow in the process of reeling back in. You will need to ever so often take back in one to two feet of line to keep your minnow from burrowing back into the mud. (Note: they call em mud minnows). If your local tackle shop is out of these little flounder delicacies, my personal favorite would be the ole mullet minnow. A lot of guys swear by live mullet minnows, whereas myself, I tend to prefer the precaught frozen ones. In my book there s nothing worse than spending any fishing time hunting bait. Also with frozen mullet there s no need for extra equipment, no bubble box, no cast nets, no turbo trolls and save gas not having to look for bait. As far as the rig I fish with, the ole trusty multy species Carolina rig is my choice. Probably the easiest and cheapest rigs in salt water fishing. Carolina rigs consist of four basic parts, weight, swivel, leader and hook. In years past, I was partial to the egg weight, until last summer when a fisherman and his buddy came into te shop. The fisherman was using a quarter ounce bullet weight and his buddy was using the same set up except he rigged on an egg weight. They fished together all day using the same bait fishing the same spots. The fisherman using the bullet weight had out fished his partner in crime, bag limit to five. After trying this method, I can testify that my flounder strikes have increased by at least ten to fifteen percent. Part two of the Carolina rig would be a # 7 barrel swivel. I prefer a black swivel to try and prevent a lot of useless bluefish hitting my bait. Nickel and brass tend to reflect and sparkle in the water attracting the blue fish. The third thing to figure out is what kind of leader to use. I prefer to use a 20lb. test Cajun Red Line, 18 to 24 inches. Some people prefer braided, steel, titanium, or iron silk. Just give me the Cajun red line, cause I can get 16 to 17 leaders off of one 300 yd filler spool for around $ Can t beat that! Probably the most important piece, I d say, to the Carolina rig is the hook. The most commonly used hook by flounder fisherman in my area is the # 2 Lazer Sharp Eagle Claw. But just to keep myself honest, I do sometimes tie on a 2/0 L042/G Eagle claw hook while I m trolling. It seems to work better because it s a bit bigger. Try and run at least an eighth of an inch out of the mullet minnows head. It seems that with the a little extra hook, it helps to hook the flounder s top jaw on the strike, giving you precious seconds to try and set your hook while the fish is trying to spit your minnow out after that initial pull. When fan casting, the #2 L042/G works just fine, when you feel that bite fan casting, you need patience to prevail. You may wonder why patience plays such a roll in flounder fishing. Well, a flounder is an ambush predator. It sneaks up and hunts its prey like a cat does a bird, waiting to pounce. When you feel the bite, do yourself a favor, flip your bell housing giving out about 2 to 3 feet of line, let him get the bait, Grab a drink or tell a fish story to a friend. Some people like to wait until they see their line moving. A sure sign that a fish is on, but has probably swallowed your hook. That s okay if the fish is legal size, and you re gonna eat him. But what if he s not and you re using a stainless steel hook? That could be

11 continued from page 11 fatal to under sized fish thrown back and less citations for future flounder fisherman. So from my point of view, let s stay away from stainless steel hooks if you use that type of fishing style. As far as where to fish...the first area that comes to mind would have to be Snow s Cut. The flounder capital of North Carolina. The North Carolina state record was caught in this little slice of heaven. Snow s Cut has an array of hard structures for the ambush of a big flat dog. The Cut, as we call it, is a spot that usually holds a consistent bite. But there are days when the biting slows and on days like that, I make my way toward the north courtesy of the ICWW. Traveling in the direction of Wrightsville Beach from Snow s Cut, working my way towards the Carolina Beach Inlet, I try most of the docks, pilings and piers. If I don t catch any keepers within 6 structures, I move to the east side of the ICWW, more toward the sand bars, shell bottoms, and marsh grass, and just keep working my way towards the Inlet. If you use a depth gauge or fish finder, go halfway up into the inlet and begin looking for the drop off. A good friend, Joe Cox, and I work that drop off like no tomorrow, and almost always pleased with the time spent there. So go try it! Well, enough of my rambling, hopefully some of this info will help you land your first one or the Big one. Till next time... keep your gills wet. Adam Burton The Gill Wetter October 25, 2005 page 11

14 The Gill Wetter October 25, 2005 page 14 Hold the Salt Freshwater Fishing Reports John Ameri, from County Line Bait & Tackle (910) reports: The river is unusually high causing the fishing to be not all that great. Last Wednesday was the first day he had seen the landing above water in some time. At this time private ponds have seen some Catfish and Panfish. The main river however, has had perch, bream, and a few catfish in the 12 to 15lb range. The Black river is also very high, but with last weekends warm weather things are going to start looking up. Hopefully, with the water slowly trying to get out of here and a recent full moon, some better fishing will settle in. The crappie should begin to come to the top when the water temp. comes down to around 70 degrees, but with last weeks weather still in the 80 s, the Crappie may not start to bite. However, with the bit of luck and a bit of rain the water temp. may come down sooner and the bite pick up. Outdoors Sportsman Capt. David - Headhunter Outdoors, Now lets talk about hunting. General gun deer season started Oct.15th. Remember to wear your blaze orange, its the law. If you still hunt it s time to give your stand and safety harness a good checkout before heading to the woods. If you don t have a harness, get one.a fall can at the least ruin you re day and could cost you you re life.be sure of you re target before you shoot too. Dog hunters take note too. The excitement of the hunt can sometime get to you so be sure of what s behind that deer you re shooting at. You re buddy won t be happy with a hole in his truck and it s dangerous as well. On one other note folks, deer hounds can and do get lost from time to time.if one shows up at you re place don t run it off.give the hound some water and check it s collar for the owners phone number. A good hound is worth it s weight in gold to the owner and you will probably make a new friend by taking a little time to take care of the dog for him. A buddy of mine had a dog show up in Burgaw and they were hunting in Hampstead. Well that s it for this week folks, remember take a kid hunting or fishing it s worth it. Capt.
