September Guest Speaker: The highlight of the September meeting was the informative presentation by our own John Carman about where the hot spots are that we often hear about from other guests speakers. Carm s program showed via Google earth photos where the key, often referred to, fishing holes, were from just north of the TECO station down to just beyond the Skyway bridge. Not only were these locations shown, but Carm also talked about the kind of fish you would most likely find there. While most of the locations were primarily accessible by boat, other spots such as E. G. Simmons Park was discussed showing the popular wade fishing sites which is another of his areas of Carm s expertise. Kudos to Carm for another outstanding presentation. Minutes and Financial Report: The minutes from the August meeting and the Financial Report for September were approved by the membership. (Continued on Page 3, see Fish Stories) Are you in business? Doug Martin, of Red Devil Fishing Charters reported that the rain has slowed things down a bit. However there are plenty of trout, snapper and grunts at the reefs and other locations.

Doug talked about one of his customers who wanted to catch a shark until she hooked one and ended up with only the head of a large jack on her line. Doug also runs a program to take veterans fishing.

Cast Net Instructions: There seems to be an interest to conduct cast net instructions again. We will plan to do so after the time change and when the weather gets cooler.

Doug Martin, of Red Devil Fishing Charters reported that the rain has slowed things down a bit. However there are plenty of trout, snapper and grunts at the reefs and other locations. Tarpon are still in the bay and near the Skyway fishing pier. Various species of sharks can be found just about anywhere. Doug talked about one of his customers who wanted to catch a shark until she hooked one and ended up with only the head of a large jack on her line. Doug also runs a program to take veterans fishing. Most of the usual suspects that are called on for fish stories reported: Too hot!, or Too rainy. With everyday temperatures in the mid nineties, that is understandable. Cast Net Instructions: There seems to be an interest to conduct cast net instructions again. We will plan to do so after the time change and when the weather gets cooler. Rod and Reel Raffle: There are about 16 tickets left for the rod and reel raffle. We expect all tickets to be sold by the end of the October meeting and will draw the winning ticket at that time. Freedom Boat Club Charters Program: This has been a very popular program since it started a few months ago. The Captains that operate the Freedom Boat Club program at Little Harbor, who are also licensed guides, take four anglers out to show how, where, when to catch various species of fish. One of the anglers must be a Freedom Boat Club Member. Club Fishing Towels: Did you get yours? Each member is entitled to one club fishing towel. Additional towels are available t $3 each. HELP WANTED Nominations: Mark Twain once said, Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason. The same can be said about the leaders of any organization, including our club. Nominations of any individuals for the positions of President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary and two Directors-at Large must be presented to the Nominating Committee by the November meeting. Nominations from the floor will be honored during the November meeting as well. Winter Coats for Homeless Veterans: Capt. Doug Martin collects winter coats for homeless veterans in the Tampa Area. If you have any men s winter coats or jackets that can be used for this worthy project, please bring them to the October meeting, Useful Information: The follow excerpt was produced for the Sun City Center area, however there are some interesting tidbits included that might be useful to all. Go to and click on the third item that appears on your screen. There are tax exemptions for widows, widowers, disabled, blind.. a whole variety of categories we should all know about. Charter Trip November 17: Terry Ricket has arranged a charter trip on the Gulf Star, out of Tarpon Springs. Ideally, we are looking for 25 anglers to take part in this trip. This is a 5 hour charter trip leaving the dock at 11 am and returning at 4 pm, so we must check-in by 10:15 am on the day of the trip. Carpooling can be arranged. According to Gulf Star, this trip is action packed fishing for reef fish in feet of water where we can catch Key West snapper, black sea bass, porgies, grunts and some possibly some keeper Grouper. The cost is $87 per member. Once we have 50% ($1,188) of the required amount to lock in the charter, we will have the date locked in. Make Checks payable to Cast Away Anglers and bring to the next meeting. Enter November 17 Charter in the memo section of your check. There will be will a sign-up sheet at our October meeting. Everything is included in the cost of the trip: fishing and rigging advice, frozen and live bait, rod and reels (or you can bring your own), hooks, sinkers, swivels, fishing license, fish cleaning, parking, ice for your filets and all gratuities. Club Dinner September 24th: We had 46 members and guests attend the club dinner at Romano s Macaroni Grill in Brandon. A nice selection of entrees was offered and since we arrived during happy hour, the crowd was jovial, to say the least. Pam Tebbetts won two raffles and took home a bottle of white and a bottle of red. Sally Bodmer took home a bottle of wine from the raffle as well. The 50/50 garnered $155 which put $78 in John Mayoka s pocket. Or did it go in Linda s purse? The food was good, the crowd was happy and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Thanks to the Program Committee (Greg Franczyk, Jack Banther and Terry Ricket for setting up the evening for us. (See page 5) Punography: All the toilets in London police stations have been stolen. 5 Page 5 Jay Rosenblum, Greg Franczyk, Tom Deptula and Bob Preston went fishing with Capt. Matt Morrison on Monday, August 21st. The day s catch include puffer fish, mangrove snapper, snook, flounder, Spanish mackerel, sheepshead, stingray, shark, jacks and the proverbial pin fish. Tom Deptula caught his first snook of his life and then caught another a few minutes later. Greg Franczyk bagged this keeper gulf flounder. He said it was gong to the dinner table. Bob Preston landed this 26 inch Spanish mackerel after it ran the line off about thee times. Dinner crowd at Macaroni Grill on September 24th
