1 SOME OF THE LUCKY DOGS OF OLD MARSH SECURITY UPDATE By Kerry Finn Director of Security and Community Operations Manager A big thank you to all within our gates who help us to make safety and security a priority. We have had a considerable number of additional residents hook up their alarm systems to our gatehouse. This will help to ensure that they have a fast response to any alarm, and that they will reduce unnecessary service fees. If you would like information about this free process, just give me a call,. My direct line is We also appreciate travel notifications and updates. Not only can we help with mail and papers, we will help monitor packages and will give your property an extra security check while you are away. There have been a few recent reports of drag racing on Jog Road. Please continue to contact the gatehouse should you hear or see any dangerous activity, whether inside, or alongside, our property. The phone number is In closing, I would like to share a photo, below, of a recent visitor to Old Marsh. How wonderful it is to experience such unusual sights! Have fun and stay safe in the new year ahead. COMMUNITY UPDATE By Deborah Price Community Association Manager This time of year calls for reflection on the past year and looking ahead to the future. I want to take a moment to thank our wonderful property owners for their participation in making this community so unique. You have warmly welcomed new homeowners, actively participated in property activities and events, and have kept communication lines to staff open. In addition, your support of our Resident Services Program has helped us to expand our offerings and our staff. We are all, indeed, fortunate to have Old Marsh in our lives. As we sprint into 2014, I look forward to this new year as a continued opportunity to further serve our property owners and all who enter our gates. HOLIDAY FUND THANK YOU All of the members of the HOA Team give our property owners a warm thank you for their generous contributions to our 2013 Holiday Fund. We wish you:
2 AREA ACTIVITIES SEEN ENJOYING THE FLORIDA SUNSHINE THIS MONTH FEATURING: - ANIMALS - If you are looking for some fun activities for yourself, your friends, and your family, consider some of our area attractions, below. Palm Beach Zoo - See a wide variety of animals, birds, reptiles and amphibians in naturalized habitats. Located in West Palm Beach, there are daily shows, Safari Nights, and lots of special events. Go to palmbeachzoo.org or call for information. Photo credit: Taken at the zoo by OMGC resident Bob Gollance Busch Wildlife Sanctuary - Learn about Florida s wildlife and natural environment at this unique refuge in Jupiter. With a nature center, wildlife hospital, and nature trails, this facility has something for everyone. This worthy organization has been a great help to Old Marsh consulting on our property and guiding our annual nature walks. Go to buschwildlife.org or call for information. Lion Country Safari - Go on a drive-through safari and enjoy a walk-through amusement park in western Loxahatchee. See over 900 animals, but go early when they are being fed. They nap in the hot afternoons. Go to lioncountrysafari.com or call for information and to find out about the newest babies.
3 FLORIDA STATE SYMBOL The Largemouth Bass The 1975 legislature designated the Florida largemouth bass as the official state freshwater fish. One of America's most-prized game fish, (Micropterus salmoides floridanus) seems to grow to unusually large size in Florida waters. It can reach a length of more than twenty inches and weigh more than fifteen pounds. This black bass is an elongated sunfish, whose distinguishing feature, aside from its exceptionally large mouth, is a deep notch in the dorsal fin. Largemouth bass usually live in quiet waters that contain bountiful vegetation, like those of Old Marsh. You will see fisherman trying their luck on property, where a catch-and-release policy is embraced. RESIDENT WELLNESS Consider starting the New Year off by helping others. When you donate blood you could save a life. Look for local buses or contact the Red Cross for area centers. We have a four-page flyer in the HOA Office, also, if you would like more information. JANUARY 2014 COMMUNITY CALENDAR - JANUARY - CHRISTMAS TREE PICK-UPS Regular trash days, Tuesdays and Fridays Trees will be recycled at the landfill. Be sure all decorations are removed. 4 LANDSCAPE SERVICES By Keith Cote Landscape Director JANUARY 2014 low turf with brown, dead, leaf blades in the center of the ring. The disease can be treated with a fungicide, and with supplemental fertilizer, the grass will recover. You can reduce the chance of getting Brown patch in your lawn by not overwatering your grass. Neither of these diseases are fatal if treated quickly and adequately. They are both more of a cosmetic issue in the landscape. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. COMMUNITY SERVICES By Kathy Arnowitt In-Home Specialist There are a few fungal diseases prevalent in the landscape this month due to the atypical weather we have been experiencing. The warmer than average temperatures in combination with the higher humidity and unseasonable rain showers have created the perfect environment for disease outbreaks usually only seen in the summer months. Awabuki Viburnum are defoliating due to a leaf spot fungus. The fungus can be treated and the Viburnum will recover, however if it is left untreated, the plant s overall health can decline if the cycle repeats itself multiple times. It is important to remove and dispose of the fallen leaves as they contain spores that can spread to uninfected plants. The disease can be prevented by treating Awabuki Viburnum with a systemic fungicide every days and keeping it well fertilized. Brown patch is a fungal disease commonly seen in golf course turf, and not frequently seen in home lawns of St. Augustine grass. It is easily identified by a circular ring of bright yel- Awabuki Leaf Spot Kathy Arnowitt Office: (561) Cell: (561) karnowitt@oldmarshgolf.com Keith Cote Office: (561) Cell: (561) kcote@oldmarshgolf.com Kerry Finn Office: (561) Cell: (561) kfinn@oldmarshgolf.com Deborah Price Office: (561) Cell: (561) dprice@oldmarshgolf.com Tile and Grout Cleaning Along with tropical prints and outdoor entertaining spaces, tiled floors are part of our Florida décor. Unfortunately, porous tiles and grout can become imbedded with dirt, cooking oil, grease and detergent residues. A regular professional cleaning and sealing is recommended to keep your surfaces looking bright and fresh. The process begins with a cleaning agent to loosen contaminates. The surface is then cleaned and prepared for sealing. A protective sealant makes the surface more resistant to spills and stains, easier to clean, and will make the surface look great longer. If the grout is stained too deeply, or if you are redecorating and want a new look, a new application of grout in a different color will give the appearance of being brand new! Before After
