1 O n the Water TWIN CITIES CHAPTER OF MUSKIES, INC. Volume 14, Issue 4 APRIL 2011 Dave Knutson is Men s Division Top Angler in Chapter s Members Only Contest This 51-incher from Forest Lake was Dave Knutson s longest fish of the season. Dave was the first place winner in our chapter s Members Only Contest with 32 fish and placed 20th in the International contest. Contest chair Eric Bakke presented plaques to the winners of our chapter s Members Only Contest at the March meeting. Dave Knutson earned top place in the Men s Division. Dave retired this year and fished from June until freeze-up in November only taking time off to go bowhunting. He fished several metro area lakes as well as taking trips to Vermilion and the Winnipeg River. Most of the time he fished with one of Pat McAllister s coot lures. Dave will now move to our chapter s Master s level. Pat McAlister, also fishing with the coot, took second place. Marko Brinatte, who also fished as many days as possible during the season, came in third. The Women s Division was won by Carol Janik with a 51- incher being her longest fish. At the our chapter s Master s level, Kris Astorp with a phenomenal 64 fish took first place. Kris placed second in the international contest. Last year s winner, Dave Roll with 50 fish came in second. Cindy Hegdahl took first place in the Women s Masters Division, and Linda Knutson s took second place. Zach Weyland won the Junior s Division. Greg Batina and Tom Batina took second and third place. A complete list of fish entered and winners can be found at twincitiesmuskiesinc.org, the chapter website Congratulations to all our 2010 winners!! 2011 Sportsman s Banquet Another sold out crowd attended this year s 2011 Sportsmen s Banquet. It was a great night to come out and support this major fundraising effort for our club. Over $22,000 in prizes were taken home that night. The final amount that was raised will be announced in the coming months, but we are hopeful that it is close to last year s amount. In addition to the raffles, contests and fun, there were several awards presented. The first-ever President s Award was given to Frankie Dusenka of Frankie s Live Bait and Marine. This award is given to a person that has shown incredible support of our chapter year after year. This year s Muskie Award was presented to Greg Ide (see page 4), Brent Hirsch was presented Lunker of the Year and Kris Astorp received awards for his participation in the 2010 Members Only Fishing Contest. Thank you for everyone that attended the banquet. It takes your support to make this a successful event. And a special thank you goes out to all of the banquet sponsors. Without them, there would not be a banquet, so please consider them in the future when buying equipment, resort stays, guide trips, and boats. Banquet photos on page 7 Frankie Dusenka accepted the first-ever President s Award for his tireless support of our chapter from his efforts in raising muskie fry to working with the tournament for a grand prize boat.

2 F rom Our President: TROY ZEULZKE Spring is fast approaching. It s time start prepping the rod and reels and take your spring inventory on tackle. There are plenty of activities coming up before our muskie season even starts. Restock your tackle inventory at George s Minnesota Muskie Expo April 8-10 at Concordia University in St. Paul. A poolside demo of new lures hosted by the North Metro chapter will be April 13. Our annual Minnesota Veteran s Home Opener is scheduled for May 7. Once the season starts, look for the Metro Muskie Tournament June 11; the Capable Partners Outing, held in conjunction with Lucky Libby s Muskie Fishing Event with veteran s families, on June 12; and the Military Fishing Day co-sponsored with Fishing for Life on June 24. We certainly appreciate the support from our members in attending these events. Without you we would not be where we are today. It would be impossible to keep running events like our Vet s Home Opener, Capable Partners Outing or Military Fishing Day. Please go out and recruit some friends. Let them know what Muskie s Inc. is about. It s much more than just fisherman that meet and swap stories. Let s get more people involved from youth on up and keep growing our sport. Hugh C. 4 Greg Ide Honored with Muskie Award Greg Ide was pre sented the chapter s Muskie Award at the Sportsmen s Banquet. This honor is bestowed each year to a chapter member who has consistently and unselfishly devoted time and energy over the years to promoting and improving the goals of Muskies Inc. Greg has served as a board member for a number of years. He selects speakers for our club meetings and organizes sport shows. He sets up our booth and mans it. Greg also serves on the tournament committee. He was involved with the MMA for many years as the Chapter representative. Greg is our resident biologist and has attended various fisheries seminars and responds to scientific concerns involving from Youth Co-chair Tom Keith This will be the third consecutive year that the Twin Cities Chapter of Muskies Inc. has co-sponsored Military Family Fishing Day with Fishing for Life. It will be on Friday, June 24th, starting from Maynards on Lake Minnetonka. People typically launch out of Gray's Bay after 6:00 a.m. and arrive at Maynards shortly before 7:00 a.m. Volunteers meet up with their military families and then take them out for a morning of fishing. Every one returns about noon for lunch and an awards program. It is a multi-species event, so everyone catches fish. Fishing for Life provides worms for people interested in pursuing panfish. If you would be willing to be one of the volunteers, who will take military families out fishing muskies. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Hugh Becker C. Foundation acting presently as its secretary. He has been involved in almost every Chapter activity over the last four or five years and he unselfishly shares his boat with many. Congratulations to a most deserving person. Military Fishing Day June 24 that day, please contact Tom Keith at tomk@usiwireless.com We need at least 20 volunteers to meet the needs of the families. All kids will be given a complimentary package of lures from the TC Chapter of Muskies Inc. We are inviting legislators and if you know of a legislator, who would like to fish, please contact me. We will have people there, who can provide you with good ideas of where you should fish. Last year, the three boys I took out fishing had parents serving in a war zone. It was a special morning, doing something nice for families that truly serve our country. If you cannot volunteer that day, but would like to donate some lures to the kids or if you have any questions, please contact me at tomk@usiwireless.com George s Minnesota Muskie Expo George s Minnesota Muskie Expo is April 8-10 at Ganglehoff Center, Concordia University in St. Paul. The Expo was founded 17 years ago by George Wahl, inventor and manufacturer of the Eagle Tail. The three-day event is dedicated to muskies and muskie fishing featuring some of the world s top muskie anglers sharing secrets of success in seminars, retailers offering great sale prices, as well as guides and resorts. The Expo is the place to connect with the factory reps from industry giants with questions and suggestions. The unique aspect of the Expo is being able to buy direct from lure manufacturers, getting low prices, custom colors and the newest prototype baits. Again this year, if you bring an Abu Garcia or Shimano reel, company reps will be available to help clean or repair one reel per person. Fish-A-Thon will sponsor a large Kids Midway area with games and prizes for kids. At George s Tackle Box kids will be able to make their own lures and take home $30 worth of baits. Seminars feature Bob Mehsikomer, Gregg Thomas, Luke Ronnestrand, Tom Dietz, Steve Heiting, John Hoyer, Bob Turgeon, Steve Worall, Larry Dahlberg, Tom Gelb and Bob Landreville. The Expo is open from 2 to 9 pm Friday, from 10 am to 7 pm on Saturday, and on Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Kids 12 and under are free, so bring the whole family. Adult entry for the Expo is $10, a three-day pass is $17. Expo information can be found online at: minnesotamuskieexpo.com. Volunteers are needed for George s Tackle Box. Help kids assemble bucktails, custom painting of soft body plastic lures, assemble wire leaders, and hand out any donated jigs or lures. No experience needed plus free entry to the Expo for a couple hours volunteering to help future fisherpersons. Contact Dave Knutson at or to volunteer. 4 On the Water

5 Big Muskie Smiles So who wouldn t want to catch a muskie anyway? They re big. They fight like crazy. Just getting a follow can sometimes change a person s life forever. Why wouldn t anyone want more opportunities to have an encounter with one of these creatures? These are the tenants of a new movement in the muskie world called Big Muskie Smiles. Why do so many people out there have a deep hatred for muskies? It seems that no matter how much data we provided people the negative emotion toward muskies would overrule logic and science more times than not. With help from a gentleman from the ad firm of Pocket Hercules, we ve set out to create a PR campaign for muskies. The goal is to improve the public image of muskies, specifically in areas where the DNR is looking to add new muskie water. The Big Muskie Smiles campaign is a separate effort outside of Muskies Inc. We in MI are very good Watch for billboards around the state and the Big Musky Smiles board at sports shows and other events this summer. at targeting the 10% of hard-core muskie fishermen, but quite frankly we re terrible at communicating our message to the rest of the 90%. It s this 90% that BMS is planning to target. In 2011 one part of the plan is to have signs like the one in the picture at all the state s major sports shows. Another is to have billboards strategically staged around the state, and specifically in areas where there is a chance for muskie expansion. There will also be several photo contests for people to show off their Big Muskie Smiles for those who have taken their picture with the signs like that pictured as well as with real muskies. These pictures will be shown in the BMS Facebook page as well as the website that is currently under construction. If anyone would like to volunteer for the Big Muskie Smiles campaign you can contact Jack Supple at: jack@pockethercules.com Minnesota DNR to Expand Muskie Fishing Opportunities Roosevelt Lake in northern Crow Wing County and the Sauk River chain of lakes in Stearns County southwest of St. Cloud will be stocked with muskellunge this fall in response to growing angler interest, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). This decision is a positive step consistent with our long-range management plan for muskie and northern pike, said Dirk Peterson, DNR fisheries management chief. Many people representing a wide variety of interests helped create that plan, and the desire to develop new muskie fisheries was clear. Muskie will not be stocked this fall in three other lakes the DNR was considering. Upper and Lower South Long lakes near Brainerd will not be considered further for muskie management. Stocking in Lake Tetonka west of Waterville has been put on hold indefinitely pending resolution of local issues. Although physically and biologically suitable for muskie management, the lakes initially proposed in the Brainerd area have public access issues that raise public safety concerns, said Tim Goeman, northeast regional fisheries supervisor. Their combined 2,100 surface acres also would not meet muskellunge fishing demand in the Brainerd area, so we will continue to look for a larger, yetto-be-identified lake for future consideration. DNR will collect additional information on recreation use and user attitudes in the Lake Tetonka area and expand its public outreach efforts before re-considering stocking muskie in Tetonka. Stocking muskie in Roosevelt Lake and the Sauk River chain is a step toward fulfilling a goal in the longrange management plan that calls for up to eight new waters to be stocked by 2020, focused on areas of the state without nearby muskie fishing opportunity. Anglers have become increasingly interested in muskie now that 50-plus inch fish can be caught in Lake Mille Lacs, Lake Vermilion and other waters that have been stocked since the 1980s. About 14 percent of Minnesota's licensed anglers target muskie, and the quality experiences Minnesota offers attract muskie anglers from across the nation. On the Water 5

6 Youth Project from Tom Keith Youth Co-Chair All of us have bucktails, spinnerbaits, or buzzbaits that are not getting used. We also need to get more youth involved with musky fishing and attending our MI meetings. If members would bring in old lures to the meetings, we will either refurbish them or take the usable components and rebuild them. The plan is to give one away to each child under the age of 18 at each meeting. That might help encourage them to attend more meetings. If you have bucktail, flashabou, beads, blades, clevises, or bodies that you are not going to use, we could use them to expand this program. Please bring anything you would be willing to give to the next chapter meeting you attend. Thanks to everyone who is donating lures for this project. The lures you are donating are wonderful and are getting to kids! The general meeting attendance of kids under the age of 18 is increasing. I am grateful to Hedron Industries, the Hugh C. Becker Foundation, and the Board of Directors for the Twin Cities chapter of Muskies Inc for their donations to this project. We are also using some of the donations as prizes at the Minnesota High School Muskie Tournament and the Armed Forces Family Fishing Celebration. If anyone is a lure painter and would be willing to paint a couple of crankbaits and jerkbaits that were given to us, please contact me. If you have any questions, contact me at tomk@usiwireless.com this n that START YOUR MUSKIE FISHING IN APRIL Soon the water will be turning soft bringing on the fever of muskie fishing. 8 A Muskie Tale from Elaine Randolph It s Sunday, September 6, at Leech Lake. Denise Olson and I are going out with Muskie Guide Terri DuBe. Terri said we would hit the water early. Denise and I were thinking about 8:00 am, but here s Terri knocking on our doors at 7:00 am. So, grab the coffee and gear. We re off to the first of Terri s favorite spots where a fish was seen the previous weekend. Terri gives each of us one of her secret lures and settles herself in the front of the boat. Denise chose the back of the boat and I m in the center. The steady breeze allows for an easy drift down the shoreline. Terri has a mid-40 inch muskie follow. Then, fish on for Denise a very upset small northern with a mouthful of hooks. It s a good thing Terri carries extra hook-outs because there s now a nice one at the bottom of Leech Lake. Pass one done. Let s try that again before it gets too windy. The mid-40 inch muskie shows herself again, but won t take a bait. Finally, it s my turn. Strong head shakes maybe she finally took a bait. Wrong! Just another northern. Terri wants to keep it, so in the live well it goes. The wind is starting to blow and the muskies aren t interested. The Muskie Tale Award is presented each year to the person(s) with the best story from the past fishing season. Above are Elaine Randolph (right) and Denise Olson with the Muskie Tale. They get to keep the tale all year and, in turn, will present it to the next person with a great tale. At the end of the drift, it s time to move to another spot. We all bring in our lures and lay down our rods for the trip. SPLASH! What was that? Denise is in the water! Three people moving three different directions at the same time, a wind gust, a boat with a low back end was the perfect recipe. Glasses still on, cell phone to be used during the tournament this weekend still in her jacket pocket, Denise is soaked but not hurt. No need to panic. All we have to do is get her back in the boat. With one of us lifting/pulling on either side, the first attempt was aborted and she was released back into the cold water. Second try. Careful, we don t need three people in lake. SUCCESS! We have saved the Tournament Chairperson! Time to run back to the resort for dry clothes. But, why isn t the boat getting up on plane? What s wrong with the motor? Everything worked great when we left the resort. Wait, there must be at least an inch of water on the floor in the back of the boat. Did it all come from rescuing Denise? Well, no. It s the live well! It s been filling and overflowing for at least an hour. Didn t see the water until the boat was moving and the back end was really low in the water. Turn on the bulge pump and slowly we head back to shore. Dry clothes for Denise, dry shoes for me, and more hot coffee for everyone. OK, lets try this again. Secret spot number two. Nothing. No muskies. No follows. Not even a northern. Terri has one more place she wanted to try but wind chases us back to shore. Denise and I had a great time minus going swimming with heavy clothes on and are ready to do it again this summer. If you need a guide on Leech Lake, talk to Terri DuBe.
