1 TWIN CITIES CHAPTER OF MUSKIES, INC. n O Water the Volume 11, Issue 7 JULY 2008 TC Chapter Summer Fishing League The first Chapter Fishing League outing was at held at Lake Independence June 12. Participants included Matt Olson and Greg Kappas (left) and the father-son team of Tom and Greg Batina (right). Come out and enjoy a beautiful sunset like the one Juris Ozols caught that night. Join other chapter members and maybe catch a muskie or two. T he Twin Cities Chapter Muskie Fishing League is a series of informal fishing outings over the summer. It s about the best excuse an angler can have for needing to go fishing. The league is a great opportunity to meet others that muskie fish, learn about lakes, and possibly learn some new techniques to put fish in the boat. The first outing at Lake Independence was a great evening for boating, though not necessarily for fishing. There aren t much in terms of results, as no fish were boated, but it can only get better from here on. Each of the participants earned 5 points apiece for showing up. We encourage everyone to participate in as many outings as they would like. This is a good way for those without boats to get in some fishing as we will find space for you to fish. Contact Jody Dahms at jdahms@aquali.com or with questions regarding the league. Anglers without boats, please confirm attendance with Jody to ensure that we arrange boat space for you. The league schedule is as follows: TUESDAY, JULY 8 Minnetonka Gray s Bay Landing 6-10 pm NO GENERAL MEETING WEDNESDAY, JULY 30 Minnetonka Gray s Bay Landing 6-10 pm SATURDAY, AUGUST 16 Lake Harriet/Lake Calhoun 6 am -12 pm TUESDAY, AUGUST 26 Lake Waconia 6-10 pm SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER Lake Mille Lacs times to be determined SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11 Minnetonka Gray s Bay Landing 10 am 4 pm PARTICIPATE IN FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES The chapter is currently involved in two different annual fundraising activities a raffle to raise money that will be used exclusively for stocking muskies in the metro area and our Frank Schneider Jr. Memorial tournament held in September. Money raised by the tournament is what the chapter uses for operating funds each year. It pays for the speakers at meetings, food provided at chapter events, as well as printing and mailing your monthly newsletter. We ask that each chapter member do your part in selling raffle tickets. And, we would like to see each and every one at the tournament this year. Remember, as chapter members it s you who benefit from the results of the these fundraising activities.

2 From Our President SHAWN KELLETT Well, I hope everyone s having fun fishing. Lord knows the season took long enough to get here this year Aside from all the things going on, there s something that needs our attention. Last month we had the DNR come in and discuss its new Long Range Esox Plan. This plan lays the groundwork for the next 20 years and includes new lakes, revised stocking plans and a greater awareness of how close the DNR attempts to manage muskies. Right now an opposition group led by Kirk Schnitker is doing everything they can do to kill the Long Range Plan. They have even been making overtones that they would like to start chipping away at the muskie fishery we currently have as well. We ALL need to get together to stop this immediately! Currently myself and a few others are putting together a comprehensive plan to educate and debunk Kirk s arguments. We plan to use the radio, print, internet and newscasts to get our message out to the masses. We even plan to stage an event in front of the DNR headquarters the day that the decision is to be made. What we need from our membership is: 1. Educate yourself and everyone you talk to about the plan. 2. Write a letter, send an , or make a phone call July 28th (this date could change so keep an eye on the web). Be positive and state that you want to see the Long Range Esox Plan approved by the commissioner. 3. Show up at the DNR headquarters between 8am and 9am July 29th to show them we support the plan. If you have time off during the day please let us know so we can better plan the event. This will be a positive rally to show our support for the DNR and the plan. As the president of our organization I hear from a lot of people asking why don t we stock Lake X? or why won t the DNR do Y?. This is the opportunity that we ve been working towards for the last 3 years to do these things. It s in jeopardy because of one lobbyist and a handful of people. We need EVERYONE S help on this! DNR s Address: 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN Mark Holsten s contact information: or Mark.Holsten@state.mn.us Please take one day out of your fishing season to improve the fishery for the next 20 years. This is the time for action! Incentives for Early Registration For Tournament Make plans now to participate in our chapter s 41st annual Frank Schneider Jr. Memorial Muskie Tournament held September 5, 6 and 7, 2008 in the Bemidji-Cass Lake-Walker-Longville area of northern Minnesota. This is our chapter s biggest fundraising event. Money raised by the tournament provides operating funds that pay for the speakers at monthly meetings, the food at chapter events such as the August picnic and Capable Partners outing, as well as the printing and mailing your monthly newsletter. The tournament, themed Muskie Mania 2008 this year, is an event that anyone who muskie fishes can participate in. You don t have to be a professional muskie fisherman or part of a team to join in the fun. In fact, we encourage juniors to enter the tournament. Everyone, including juniors, who enters a muskie (40" minimum) during the three days will have their name put in a drawing for the grand prize. The grand prize is in the form of a $30,000 certificate that can be split to apply to two vehicles of your choice from Lupient Buick Pontiac GMC. Keep your eyes open for tournament trucks advertising the event around town. Ron Schara of TV s Minnesota Bound and WCCO radio has agreed to be the MC and celebrity host for the event. If you register for the tournament before August 25th will receive a copy of Ron s book, Minnesota Bound. As an extra incentive, register by July 31 and you will have your name entered in a drawing for one of three Holiday gas cards for $200, $150, and $75. Pay for your way there. Tournament registrations are on sale now at: Joe s Sporting Goods in St. Paul; Thorne Bros in Fridley; Blue Ribbon Bait and Tackle in Oakdale; Cabela s in Rogers, Owatonna, and East Grand Forks; Barber s Inn in Wayzata; Sportsman s Warehouse in St. Cloud; Lupient Buick Pontiac GMC in Golden Valley; Reed s Family Outdoor Outfitters in Walker; One Stop in Longville; Froggie s Bait & Tackle in Cass Lake; and Bluewater Outdoors in Bemidji. You may also register on line at Discounted lodging has been reserved through August 1 at Northern Lights Casino Hotel, Walker ( ); Palace Casino Hotel, Cass Lake, ( ); and Country Inn & Suites, Walker, ( ). Make your own reservations and ask for the Muskies Inc. rate. Camping at Moondance Fairgrounds (tournament headquarters), Walker ( ) is also available. They have sites both with and without electric/water hook up as well as a dump station & showerhouse/bathrooms for campers. When you register early, you have the option of picking up your tournament package in several locations. Your tournament package includes free publications; souvenir program with lake maps; daily free feeds with free food, great camaraderie, results, and fish pictures; celebrity speakers, silent auction, product displays, and book signings at evening feeds in Cass Lake and at tournament headquarters. Meal tickets are available for the daily feeds for non-contestants. We look forward to seeing you at the tournament. 2 On the Water

3 Muskie Fishing with Capable Partners Members W eather for the Capable Partners event on Sunday, June 15 proved to be a perfect day for fishing beautiful clear sky, not too hot, not too cold. But the muskies didn t cooperate. Ten boats with Muskies Inc. members and physicallychallenged members of Capable Partners spent the morning on Lake Independence pursuing muskies. None were boated but a few follows were reported. Considering that it was Father s Day, it was a good turnout. About 25 devoted Muskies Inc. members came to help with the fishing, and of course, cook and eat a great-tasting shore lunch that was shared when fishing was done. Juris Ozols who provided his photographic expertise, also made his debut as a videographer. He will bring videos to share at a general meeting. A great time was had by all who participated even though no muskies were boated. There was some discussion of repeating the outing again later this summer. If you re interested, contact Paul Hartman at This is a great way to share your love of the outdoors with people who otherwise could not participate. Capable Partners is a non-profit organization that provides hunting, fishing, and related opportunities for physically-challenged individuals. Its members are not only the physically challenged and their families, but also able-bodied sport persons who volunteer their time and talents to organize their outings. If you have a family member or know of someone who is disabled and are sports enthusiasts, Capable Partners would be a great connection for them. The organization has outings not just for muskie fishing, but for fishing for other species, trap shooting, archery shooting, and hunting deer, turkey, pheasants, waterfowl. Find out more at Wayne Klemz and Nicholas Anderson getting Wayne s boat ready. Wayne has been taking Karl Anderson and his kids Natalie and Nicholas fishing as long as anybody can remember. Eric Shultz showing off his latest $25 multi-colored hotshot lure to Paul Hartman and Rod Guthier. Eric fished with it for quite a while, skunked. Paul Hartman with his regular partner Rod Guthier in Paul s boat. Denny and Carol Heath prepare to push them off. Libby and Tim Hoene trolling by the boat launch area. The Hoenes are North Metro chapter members but regularly attend our Capable Partners outing. On the Water 3

4 Sell, Sell, Sell Raffle Tickets to Help Preserve Local Muskie Fishery The chapter s annual Rearing Fund and Project Raffle is our way to fund the stocking of muskies in metro area lakes. Every dollar raised by the raffle is dedicated to the muskie resource. First place raffle prize is a boat-motor-trailer package a 17-foot Triton Frontier-T and trailer powered by a 60 hp Mercury. Second place prize is a $300 shopping spree at Thorne Bros. Custom Rod & Tackle, third prize is a $200 shopping spree at Blue Ribbon Tackle, and fourth prize is a Benelli Super Nova Shotgun from Joe s Sporting Goods. The drawing will be held at the September general meeting. The first 7000 tickets sold will pay for raffle expenses including purchasing the boat. We have set a goal to raise $15,000 this year. That means that we, as a chapter, have to sell at least 15,000 tickets. That s about 50 tickets per person/family. Each chapter member/family was sent 3 books of raffle tickets to sell at $2 per ticket. This is where the chapter and the muskie fishery need your help. Remember, you are the beneficiaries of the stocking. We have a great muskie fishery in the metro area and the pressure on the resource continues to grow. Help ensure that the resource stays viable for years to come. All of us need to step up and sell even more tickets. As in the past, we will have monthly incentive drawings. Chapter members who sell and turn back 30 tickets by the August meeting, and/or 60 tickets by the September meeting will have their name entered in a monthly drawing for incentives. Your choice of a trip to a great muskie fishing resorts or a numbered print are prizes for the top sellers. Each $20 book of raffle tickets you sell will stock one 20" fish. Plans are to stock as many fish as possible into White Bear Lake, Lake Minnetonka, possibly Lake Waconia and possible new lakes. Last year muskies that averaged 28" were stocked in White Bear Lake and Lake Minnetonka. We need every chapter member to participate. We ask every member sell the tickets that were sent to them or buy them yourself. The raffle committee will be at the August and September meetings to take back the money for sold tickets and issue more tickets. If you prefer, you may mail back your checks and ticket stubs. The State of Minnesota requires that any unsold raffle tickets be turned back in. If you have any questions, need more raffle tickets, or didn t receive your tickets, please call Matt Olson at Members Only Contest from Pete Randall, Contest Chair The 2008 fishing season is officially underway!!
