1 June 2018 Newsletter Introduction Well the weather got hot very fast. The water temperatures went from 59 degrees to almost 80 in 2 weeks. Our days are numbered and we will have to settle for our trips to the north. As you go through the newsletter, you will see that there are 3 trips up north to lakes that harbor 50 inch plus muskies in July and August. First one will be Lake St Clair, the second will be Eagle lake and the final one is the Chapter Challenge on Lake of the Woods. This year had a number of officers and committee chairman retire from their positions. We need new members to take on these positions so that we can keep the club going at a high level. At the end of this newsletter you will see the last of officers and positions that we have in the club. Right now, only a handful of people are carrying the load for the club. Please consider volunteering for any one of these positions or committees. Contact Jim Beaty or any of the officers for more information. We hold elections in November. Those interested in the Lake St Clair July 27th and 28 th trolling outing: We will have openings for 18 with those that attended last year first preference. Walt Krause oversees this year s trip and is accepting your name and $100 deposit to reserve your spot. Checks should be made out and mailed to Walt at the address below or bring them to a club function. As in the past, if you must cancel, your $100 will be returned to you. Contact Walt Krause for more information on this trip. Walter Krause 211 Yorktown Dr Collinsville, IL Those of you that are going to Eagle Lake Ontario in August for the club trip, your $200 deposit is due. To make your deposit ether by credit card or check. For credit card, call By check, address is: North Shore Lodge, PO box 42, Minnitaki, Ontario Canada, POV2ed. Contact Will Wright for more information on the Eagle Lake trip. August 25 th to September 1 st, The chapter Challenge on Lake of the Woods. If you look at the schedule of trips, Eagle lake ends on the 25th and Chapter challenge starts on the same day. We have a couple members that are going to leave Eagle Lake and drop down a few miles to fish the challenge. The Red Wing Lodge is the home resort again this year for the challenge. Contact Jim Beaty for more information on the LOTW Gil Hamm trip. Recent Events On May 5 th & 6 th we held our Spring Guide for Day event. Jerry Ford put his clients (Jacob and Mike Maple) on some good fish. See the pics below.

3 On June 2 nd we held our 15 th annual Kid s Free Fishing Day event at Lake Murphysboro. We had 70+ kids attend the event this year. It was hot, but everyone had a great time. We ran out of freeze pops! Thanks to everyone who helped out with this event. John Wright did another great job with the pork hot dogs and the ever prepared Howard Chambliss gave everyone a demonstration of how to properly fillet watermelons! Upcoming Events July 27 th & 28 th Lake St. Clair Trip August 18 th 25 th Eagle Lake Trip August 25 th Sep. 1 st Gil Hamm Outing Make your summer trip safer Boat U.S. Magazine reported their 5 causes for on-the-road breakdowns analyzing five years of data. Tires (44%): Low tire pressure is the number one cause of a tire s early demise. Underinflation makes tires run hotter and can cause the trailer to sway more. Tires more than three years old may rot out from the inside and should be considered for replacement. Carry a spare, or two with you always. If you must change a tire out due to a flat, it is a good reason to have a back up handy instead of spending time looking for a new tire on your trip. Wheel bearings (21%): Grease and bearings only last so long. Consider repacking or replacing your bearings annually. Carry a spare bearing set and grease. Check hubs when you stop to see if they are running hot. Replace bearing protectors if you loose one. Bearing protectors keep the grease under mild pressure and prevent water intrusion, which will ruin the bearings. Axles (11%): Inspect your axles and U bolts annually for rust. Best time for this is after you ve launched the boat and parked the trailer. Miscellaneous (6%): For those traveling on salt water trips rinse rinse when done. Ask Mike and Steve about their trips south and what salt water can do to your trailers. Tow vehicles (5%): Tow vehicle overheating especially in hot weather. Have your coolant level and drive belt tension inspected. Also, inspect hoses for softness and bulging. Other (13%) Fundraising for the Chapter We have started a new Lake St Clair raffle for Fins and Grins will again be the charter for this raffle. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. We will have tickets at our club outings and through the mail. This drawing will be at our fall tournament in October. The Shawnee Muskie Hunters participates in escrip, a fundraising program where participating business partners contribute a percentage of your purchases to our club. If you are interested there is
