Heupel, Ph.D. Center for Shark Research Mote Marine Laboratory 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway Sarasota, Florida Phone: x326 Fax: Current Position Staff Scientist, Program Manager, Center for Shark Research, Mote Marine Laboratory Education Doctor of Philosophy-Marine Science: University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia: Degree obtained Post-Graduate Diploma-Marine Science: University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia: Degree obtained Bachelor of Science-Zoology: University of Colorado at Colorado Springs: Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado: Degree obtained Positions held 2002 present: Mote Marine Laboratory, Staff Scientist, Center for Shark Research; Program Manager: Elasmobranch Behavioral Ecology Program : Mote Marine Laboratory, Staff Scientist, Center for Shark Research : Mote Marine Laboratory, Postdoctoral Scientist, Center for Shark Research : Department of Anatomical Sciences, University of Queensland, Demonstrator Research Experience Postdoctoral Research ( research advisor: Dr. Robert Hueter) Upon completion of my Ph.D. I received a Postdoctoral Fellowship to Mote Marine Laboratory where I successfully established a research program to examine the movement and behavioral patterns of sharks within a continental nursery area. This research involved the use of state-of-theart acoustic telemetry technology to monitor the continuous movements of sharks within study sites. Sharks were tracked for continuous periods of up to 7 months. In addition this project formed a collaboration with Dr. Ed Heist at Southern Illinois University to examine the genetic composition of blacktiup sharks within the Gulf of Mexico. This project provided the funding to

2 support Mr. Devon Keeney to complete his Ph.D. research. This study has resulted in 14 scientific publications to date. Doctoral Research ( research advisor: Dr. Mike Bennett) My PhD research project consisted of a research project on the biology of the epaulette shark, Hemiscyllium ocellatum (on Heron Island Reef, Great Barrier Reef, Australia), but also included analysis of other reef shark species. Life history and population dynamics were examined in detail for H. ocellatum. Data were collected from tag-recapture efforts, dissected specimens, captive studies and field observations. Life history studies included examination of aspects of reproductive biology including measurement of steroid hormone levels, examination of ageing and growth rates, diet and feeding habits, histological examination of tag site wounds and parasitology. Similar research was conducted on several other shark species captured on Heron Island Reef including the blacktip reef shark, Carcharhinus melanopterus, the brown banded catshark, Chiloscyllium punctatum and the lemon shark, Negaprion acutidens. This research resulted in 10 scientific publications. Research Skills Research skills gained include: manual and automated acoustic telemetry tracking, fish survey techniques (fish trapping, longlining, gill netting), histology, radioimmunoassay, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, light microscopy, photomicroscopy, photographic development, small boat handling, captive animal maintenance, dietary analysis from live sharks, vertebral ageing, and tagging procedures. Current Research Projects Pine Island Sound, Charlotte Harbor, Florida ( ) Use of an acoustic array to: Examine movement patterns and habitat use of four shark species: blacktip (Carcharhinus limbatus), bull (C. leucas), lemon (Negaprion brevirostris), and bonnethead (Sphyrna tiburo). Examine inter- and intra- specific interactions among shark species. Examine responses of sharks to changes in environmental conditions and tropical weather systems. Conduct collaborative research with the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge to monitor shark movements within refuge waters and define how much of the refuge is being utilized by shark species. Support Angela Barker s M.Sc. thesis on the movements and residency of cownose rays within Pine Island Sound. These data will be compared to shark movement data. Caloosahatchee River, Florida (currently ongoing) Use of an acoustic array to: Examine the response of bull sharks and common snook to changes in salinity level within the river as altered via an artificial linkage to Lake Okeechobee. Examine use of the river as a nursery for bull sharks to define nursery residence time, survival and extent of the river utilized.

3 St. Andrews Sound, Florida (currently ongoing) Collaborative research with National Marine Fisheries Service biologist Dr. John Carlson to use an acoustic array to examine mortality rates of blacktip snd sharpnose sharks in a northern Florida bay.
