1 WEEKLY ROUNDUP We re back on air and lots to talk about, although game fishing reports are pretty much nonexistent in local waters. Coupla marlin and some yellowfin at the Goldy, but the sou westers are making them hard to access. The presentation dinner at Latitude 30 was a resounding success, and everybody had a great time. Many thanks to Marcus and his staff for a top feed. A list of trophy winners appears below. Clack and Team Seaborn had a whopper of a night, cleaning up a number of trophies. 2014/15 FISH TALLY It was a bit of a patchy season, but the club ended up tagging 13 striped marlin, 13 blacks, 41 blues, 20 mahimahi, five yellowfin, five yellowtail kingfish, one hammerhead and one mako shark. Thank god for that excellent March blue bite, otherwise we would ve been in a bit of statistical strife.

2 Obviously there were plenty of species that made the trip home in an icebox, especially a better run of mahimahi, and the heaviest capture was Glen Aylward s yellowfin tuna of 43.5 kilos. 5 The above may need some explanation for those who weren t at the presentation dinner. The reasoning behind this fine trophy is that too many club members were getting away with misdemeanours that weren t covered by the Paddle Award, which is more boat-specific and generally about needing assistance to get home from offshore. Now the trophy itself is a work in progress for the want of a suitable anal fin most likely to be a yellowfin but as a perpetual it will be housed in the club s trophy cabinet anyway. So there will be a trophy, in time, but meanwhile here are this year s outstanding nominees Jarred Flynn Dislocating his shoulder at the fuel wharf while reaching out to grab the side of the boat. Not every boat carries a paramedic on board, but we should all have one of those fun green whistles the ambulances carry. Ben Gately For tagging a marlin before renewing his club membership. Bill Livingston For also tagging a marlin before renewing his club membership. Geeza Losing their anchor and quite a bit of chain off the bow after entering the harbour. Clayton Livingston Getting bitten by a dog at the Urunga Flathead Classic. It was the only bite he had too. The dog is said to be doing okay, but has had to lick its bum repeatedly to get the taste out of its mouth. James McGinty I borrowed a 24-kilo outfit from James and I said that the plaited double was the worst I d ever seen. His answer was, Fiona ties them for me because it hurts my hands.

6 The New Magnum A minor electrical fire, lost the steering, and finally, one of the rudders fell off all on the maiden voyage. Jerry Haggelstein Who managed to pin both hands together with a two-hook mackerel rig, fainted and fell downstairs into the foc sle when he tried to push them through. Required a trip to hospital to get them out. James McGinty For driving all the way from Coffs to Mooloolaba to look at a new boat. Trouble was, the boat was at Bundaberg, another 3 ½ hours up the road The Better Than Vegas Crew For hiding their trophies after last year s preso before hitting the town. They did such a good job they still haven t found them. Val High Octane Crawley For filling his boat cockpit with unleaded fuel when he put the nozzle in the rod holder instead of the fuel filler. Now I ve known Val for 30 plus years and I reckon this is the third time he s done it. Matador For having a dope plant growing up on the tower. Apparently it s medicinal, but you can claim that when you re a doctor! Seaborn Who had a bite from a mystery fish where the line broke before the #32 rubber band did. That s some rubber band!

Pheel The Bite For taking a snake to sea and no, not the lolly kind either The Seaborn Crew For calling a striped a blue during the Heavy Tackle Challenge. It subsequently gave them a much sought-after Grand Slam though. Marcus Blackwell For hooking the FAD. Clayton Livingston For going twilight sailing. Seaborn For winning the powerboat division of the Festival of Sail and trolling lures while acting as safety boat. Tim McQuade For getting hit in the nuts by a big mahimahi. It s on YouTube if you want a look. Still funny. Pheel The Bite For catching a trap rope with the outboard leg, then blowing a 25-amp fuse getting it off. Foreign Exchange

8 Throwing away a perfectly good gaff at the FAD. And a case of premature ejaculation when the explosive release of a mahimahi tag went off in the boat. The Alcatraz crew For deploying Pete Mallia s brand-new, no-risk, never fail teaser, but forgetting to tie it to the cleat first. Players Snapping not one, but both hooks on a marlin. Matador Putting a big yellowfin in the kill tank, then not being able to get it back out after rigor mortis had set in. George Blackwell Very nearly dropping the rod in the water after a 4-½ hour fight. He also broke a couple of harnesses. Somewhat hard on the gear! ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The club s AGM was held on Sunday the 2 nd of August at the Coffs Harbour Yacht Club and the following people were elected to positions of absolute power: President: Clayton Livingston Vice President: Paul Edwards Secretary: Bob St John Treasurer: Denise Baker Committee: Ross Smith Tim McQuade Rod Wright

9 Congratulations (commiserations?) to all of the above, and Clayton has promised us a regime of brutal repression, corruption and paybacks. If we don t like what he s doing, we can always have him assassinated though. (Picture a second gunman on the grassy knoll that is Mutton Bird Island.) The only proposal tabled was regarding changing the boat inspection process so Chopper doesn t spend half the season chasing up slack skippers who haven t got their paperwork in order. From now on, committee members will also be able to sign off on boat inspections in addition to Chop Chop, but ideally these are going to be conducted at the club s pre-season barbecue, the date for which will be announced soon. On that subject, our first comp day is on the 12 th of September, so mark that in your diary. Could be a few striped marlin about by then! CLUB PROFILE One thing that came out of the meeting is that more, how shall we put this, senior folk who aren t Internet savvy can find contacting the club a little difficult. The solution is as simple as a club-specific pre-paid mobile phone, the number on the letterhead and the website, rather than using a member s private phone. This way the complete list of skippers mobile contacts can be passed on from committee to committee. Weather alerts for comp days, membership renewal reminders (which are now due, incidentally), people looking for a ride on a boat or crew, and that sort of thing will all be streamlined. Thanks to Scooter for donating it. The screen is cracked, the 7 and 9 buttons don t work and the battery s buggered, but we ll get there! There will also be more frequent Facebook updates, and the website is to undergo a major transformation with fresh pics. Just bear with me on this, as unlike some people I don t have unlimited time to devote to it, and work and life often get in the way of the best laid plans.
