3 Presidents report December 2016 Welcome to the second SBN for the season. What wild and windy weather we have been having for the start of this year s season, no doubt we have all hit the water at some stage with varying resalts. For those who were un able to make it to the Get Wet Outdoors General Meeting, Dennis Paul gave a talk on his and several other club members November trip on Arafura Bluewater Charters. Dennis outlined to pros and cons of this type of charter which was quite informative. Over all it sounds like the guys had a great trip and captured a wide variety of fish across their time on the water. Thanks Dennis and also Loc for assisting with the slide show. November 25 th, 26 th and 27 th was the Social Clubs First Official Snapper & Gummy Challenge at Port Welshpool. With high winds forecast for the start of fishing it was extremely pleasing to have so many people attend on the Friday night to enter the comp. In total we ended up with 146 anglers across 50 boats. Some good size snapper was captured over the three days with Shannon Musgrove taking out the major prize of $2,000 with a 6.55kg snapper caught early on Sunday morning. The $500 gummy shark section was a one horse race in the end with Alyce Stoll weighing in a 6.6kg Gummy on the Saturday night which held everyone off right through the Sunday till the close of fishing0. Adrian Gruendler took out the lucky entry prize of $500. Feedback from the weekend was that all entrants were extremely keen to get back next year and enjoy another weekend of fishing the Challenge. Special thanks to both the Thorpdale Angling Club and Tooradin Angling Club for coming along to support the event with 5 and 3 boats respectively. The Committee was also very pleased to be able to hand over a cheque for $400 to the Thorpdale and District Angling club as a donation towards their F.A.R.A fundraising effort. Their club had lost a young member to this very rare disease earlier in the year so their club had run a fundraising event raising money to support the search for a cure. The SGGFC committee was more than happy to make a donation. December 19 th will be our Club Christmas meeting at the club rooms. BBQ starting at 6pm with meeting starting around 7 7:30, depending on numbers Santa himself might make an appearance for the kids (if we can get some feedback on numbers ASAP especially kids it would be greatly appreciated) Looking forward: We have an extremely busy January and February planned with the following events booked in: Members only King Fish comp 13 th, 14 th and 15 th of January (see further details in this SBN) Don Black weekend at Refuge Cove from 26 th till the 29 th of January And back to San Remo for our sanctioned Tournament on 18 th and 19 th of February It s great to see such a jam packed few months ahead of us. I d like to once again thank the committee for all their efforts in getting these events up and running and I look forward to seeing all members make an effort to support these events where possible. Please all have a safe and Happy Christmas and New Years and I hope to see you all out on the water in 2017 Best of luck for the events ahead Joel

6 Welshpool Snapper and Gummy Challenge. A few photos from the weekend which despite the ordinary weather forecast attracted 50 boats and plenty of anglers chasing the prize money that was on offer. Congratulations to all the winners and well done to all those involved in the organising of the event which now has the platform to become one of the biggest competitions held out of Welshpool. The committee has set the dates for next years event, November 25th and 26th and with any luck we will see better weather which will attract many more entries.

10 INFORMATION FOR MEMBERS If you have something for the SBN please send it to me, fishing stories, photos and especially Warren Fry Nominations. The SBN can only be improved by content from members. Text: or Social Committee is also after ideas for events or social nights. They are currently working on a seafood night for next season and if there is enough interest will put together a Trivia night. Contact Alyce The committee have been discussing the Don Black weekend and are making plans for maybe a slightly different format and a bit more interest. More to follow but keep the Australia day weekend free. FOR SALE I will have a For Sale section each edition of the SBN but your items must be sent to me as an add because I will just put in what you send. I am not spending hours creating adds from a pile of words. Photos are ok and please keep it to a minimum so I can get several adds in each time. GFAA The rules committee has made a minor wording change to the Regulations governing record catches: Under TIME LIMIT ON CLAIMS #4. The new wording will read follows. #4 A late payment fee of $110.00, where applicable, will be charged to whoever has caused the delay, Angler, Club or State. State and club secretaries are asked to make Recorders aware of the changes. The correction has been made on the website and copies of the 2016 Journal P60 should be corrected. GOLF DAY It was discussed at committee about running another golf day. If there is enough interest the club will set something up early in the new year. If you are interested contact Stevo, cost would be $10 p/p Kingfish weekend There is no entry form for this weekend simply pay your money before 5pm on the Friday night and weigh your fish by 1pm on the Sunday. San Remo Tournament Entries will be sent to members shortly. If you require a motel room booking contact Joel, there will be parking behind the San Remo Hotel, the comp will have a section 1 and 2. with breakfast each day. Tag and Capture sheets. Just a reminder that Tag/Capture sheets/cards must be to the club secretary or recorder within 21 days of the fish being tagged or captured. We all know Australia post is getting worse and slower so the committee suggests that before you send your paper work in you take a photo on your phone and text it to Judy. This doesn't replace the original paperwork which must still be sent in but this will help you if your mail goes missing or is slower than expected. It also pays to ask the post office to date stamp the envelope.
11 DARWIN CHARTER Back in March earlier this year a few of us spoke about doing a "live aboard charter" and before we knew it we had one booked and a date locked in. The group was made up of seven club members, one major sponsor ( Luke from Brown & Wigg ) and a father - son duo who are known to most of the boys. A few of us headed up on the Friday before our Sunday departure just to acclimatise a little bit and have a look around. First thing I noticed that Darwin isn't as big a town as I thought it would be, with a pretty compact city and all your needs within walking distance. With everyone here now departure time had come and we all headed to the marina from where we were leaving from, with a quick meet and greet and safety talk we were on our way. The first night seen us travel 200 odd nautical miles to our first destination, at first light with some of the best sunrises and sunsets you will ever see we still 4-5 odd hours to go. With that in mind Tony asked if he could throw a lure out whilst we were travelling and skipper said no problems. I reckon an hour had past when the reel screamed off and jumping out the back was a juvenile Black Marlin which we estimated at around 30kg, with a quick couple of photos and a tag in place we continued on our way. The next four days comprised of pretty much the same thing, troll in the morning, bottom bash the rest of the day and a troll in the evening. We caught numerous species of fish, Spanish Mackerel, Barracuda, Coral Trout, Ruby Snapper, Gold Band Snapper, Rankin Cod, Trevally, Nannygai, Jobfish, Wahoo, Longtail Tuna, Rainbow Runners and more. The weather was magnificent over the week with each day not being more than 10 knots, the heat was a different story with a minimum of 29 and a top of 35 degrees did knock a couple of us about. With the week almost over and we had already started heading back we had a final drop on wreck to try for some Black Jewfish, the skipper couldn't of described it any better everyone down together and as soon as someone says fish on everyone wind up. Scotty was first to hook up and landed a fish of around 4-5 kilos. Then I pulled one up of a similar size as did someone else, the skipper wasn't happy with the school fish and repositioned us, with in minutes Dillon was on and landed a beauty of around 15kg and 115 cm long. Eduardo also hooked just after Dillon and landed a nice fish of around 13 kg, with Stevo between Dillon and Eduardo he started to think what am I doing wrong. A good half hour had passed with a few dropped and some more school sized fish coming over the side, then it was my turn with what I can only describe as a flathead bite 'tap, tap, tap" and followed by a slow pull like a Banjo on your bait I struck! And bloody hell with 80lb braid and LOTS of drag this thing still took line and I had to give all I had, finally after a few minutes I had the fish at the back of the boat. For me to finish the trip like this was awesome the fish was around 14kg but was fantastic to share that moment with my son and mates ( although one of them wanted to smack me in the face ). With a farewell dinner back at the harbour before everyone departed it was a nice way to finish of the week, we all had a great time and everyone got on well even with the amount of bagging they had no choice! The skipper and deckie were great and we are all looking forward to our next adventure which sounds like it will be Vanuatu in cheers Dennis Paul.
