1 HOKIANGA BIG GAME AND SPORTS FISHING CLUB Inc. PO BOX 81, OMAPERE, SOUTH HOKIANGA Find us on: facebook NEWSLETTER NEWSLETTER EDITOR: I hope everybody had a great Christmas break and a happy new year! Don t forget to send me any pics of your fish or just cool stuff and I ll get it up on our facebook page or in the newsletters, especially with the Nationals and Reel Fishing Comp we are holding that is coming up next week! Cheers, Imogen Contact me by webbi02@wairaka.com or Cell: PRESIDENTS PRATTLE Well time is rolling around like lighting as usual and it s marlin season again, yeeh ha let the fun begin. It would be fair to say the water had been a little cold and late for the season to fire out in front of the Hokianga but the boys down south have had a bit of fun, landing a few beauties around the 150kg mark, amongst others but unfortunately were not club members. However that was not the case for Teressa Castle whom boated her first strippy for herself and the club so well done there, and again it was down south but things are starting to hot up off the Hoki and the water is looking fantastic with temps around 24 degrees. So, if you change your views and believe in the weather man for once, it sounds like we are in for a long hot summer and let s hope a great marlin season, plus it only costs half as much to gas the boat up, so get out there and get amongst it but don t forget to pay your subs! Also if your lure flavours are a bit old, small or boring give Bonze Fleet a call on Bonze Carries and manufactures a huge range of awesome lures and is happy to custom build you one if required and has always given me a great deal on multiple purchases. Bonze has been all around the world fishing and holds a wealth of knowledge so have a yarn with him as you are sure to learn something and he is fairly local so knows our waters well. Remember the Nationals are about to start so a few new lures might just be the ticket, and again we will be running our club tournament in conjunction with the Nationals and the ticket price is all inclusive for club members including a rebate. Continued on next page...
2 Now for a quick catch up on the land base scene. November: The Bluff As mentioned in the last newsletter this was held at the The Bluff, with an awesome load of fish being caught, averaging around 2.8kg with Gavin giving us a lesson in the Trevally department but everyone else following close behind with good snapper. December: Frosties For those of you who aren t aware Frosties is off of Waikara Road, south of Waipoua. We decided this was the place for a bit of a xmas break up, although the weather was a tad shitty for the Friday night festivities, but that didn t stop us from launching the fireworks, unfortunately one of the bigger ones must of come down a week later and torched the Marae, so a bit of sad news there as it was an excellent little place. The fishing itself was a bit hard and left us all standing in the rain right up to the final minute just so we could catch our 5 fish weigh in allotment, plus the $250 haggle was in conjunction with last month so the pressure was on. Whilst the overall results were really close this is how it ended: Heaviest Snapper: Shane (President) 3.82kg Heaviest Trevally: Shane (President) 2.81kg Heaviest Kahawai: John Roberts 4.27kg As I donated the product component of the haggle I had a redraw for second spot. 2 nd Heaviest Snapper: Hunia Kingi 2.85kg 2 nd Heaviest Trevally: Gavin Ross 2.58kg So well done everyone, another close battle with good points had by all and only 1 point separating the lead again. As for Johns Kahawai, what a bloody horse of a thing (shown in the pic on the left), just like the old days eh mate? Fishing off North head, should have saved that one until the Nationals. And I don t mean in your freezer. January: Cape Reinga This time I thought we would try something different and made the fishing area range from Potou up to Cape Reinga, but it would seem there are only two places when it comes down to personal choice. Continued on next page...
3 After doing a bit of reconnaissance on Friday at East beach and Parengarenga Harbour I decided large kelp balls and small snapper were not going to cut it and snuck back to my old favourite spot 90 mile beach only to find the Nield family well entrenched with beers flowing and fishing tackle ready for an early start on Saturday. Well it would seem there is only one way to combat this so I set the alarm for 5:30am and at the highly secret time I was first to the rock, but it would only be five more minutes and I was mobbed six to one and the tactical banter started. As the weekend unravelled everyone was catching awesome fish and all felt they had it under control as we reeled in trev after trev. Kiri had her personal best at 2.98kg, Imo had her best snapper yet at 3.13kg, Shaun leapt forward by points helped by his 3.28kg trev, it also went on to be Cassidy s best weekend along with Damon at points aided by his winning trev weighing 4.2kg. At one stage mid-morning on Sunday given we all had plenty of fish, Steve turned to me and said I ll give up if you do, well, I wish I had now as the fish tally was fairly even and I was currently leading by 20 points plus I rubbed his nose in my 10.2kg snapper all morning, only because you don t forget a fish like that. Well the next hour probably was where is all turned pear shaped as he pulled in another line of trevally around 3 to 4kgs which just happens to be our top scoring fish, damn it! That now puts him 15 odd points ahead, not to mention some well-earned bragging rights. As for the rest of the crew it sounds like they had an enjoyable weekend with good results at Mitimiti and probably checked things out for the up and coming Kupe Classic at Easter, which will also become our club weekend. If anyone is keen give me a call as this is always a good event with free camping and full on bar and catering facilities. Also this month s club days will be down Potou Point on the 20 th and 21 th, which will also be eligible for the Nationals so buddy up for that one and check the rules! OTHER STUFF Lastly I would just like to say what a great job Imogen is doing on the newsletter, there were a few little glitches at the end of last year with some things out of her control but she has her own printer now so things should smooth out for her, well done and I love your enthusiasm. Also people, whilst we fish 12 months of the year come rain, hail or shine there is more to the club than land base, so if you have any points of interest don t hesitate to give Imogen a call or her, as she is keen to learn and put more in the newsletter. So with the marlin about to go off I m sure there will be plenty of porkies bullshit lies untruths or even drunken accounts of what actually happened out there, if not the truth will suffice. Cheers for now. Shane, President.
4 SECRETARY STUFF Our tournament is rapidly approaching, there s only this weekend and next before we kick off on the 20 th. Don t forget to get your entries in. These are available from the Copthorne Hokianga, Victor at Dargaville Aluminium & Glass (Dargaville), or from Shane Percy in Rawene and myself. There s lots of great prizes up for grabs. Lets hope the weather s good like last year and there s heaps of fish caught. Our competition species are Snapper, Kahawai, Kingfish, Trevally and Marlin and there are also all the other species eligible for the Nationals which can be found on the NZSFC website.don t forget that you have to be a member of a NZSFC affiliated club to take part. We ve just ordered another lot of T Shirts for anyone interested and these should be available at the comp all going well. If we don t have your size available we can order more in. As we ve gone for a more expensive style of shirt they will cost a bit more and will be selling for $45. Just a note for those that aren t aware, at the NZSFC Conference it was voted in that the length of a Tag pole is to be 8 foot. It s also suggested that if your marlin is longer than the tag pole measured from the lower jaw to the fork in the tail it should exceed 90 kg. That s about it for this month, hopefully there ll be lot to report on after the Comp. Cheers, Linda OTHER STUFF: Buy/sell: If you are interested in selling any of your fishing gear etc, then we can help! We can upload a pic and description on our facebook page and here on the newsletter. If you have caught something awesome or just have a pic of the sun setting in the beautiful Far North then send our way! Land based club points to date are attached at the end of the newsletter. New dive shop has opened in Kaikohe, they have a good selection of bait, range of tackle and do dive bottle refills and testing. So get in there and support local businesses.
