1 Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club Newsletter March 2017 Presidents Fishing Report What s Happening? Hi Everyone As you all know, summer is whizzing by fast. It's been fantastic to see everyone enjoying the finest of fishing and hospitality of our club at Whangaroa. Whangaroa is living up to its amazing fish record, with some incredible fish catches this season. I must congratulate our exceptional committee, staff and helpers who made our One Base and Ladies comps run very successfully - well done. I must also thank all our sponsors, skippers and competitors for your valuable support of our contests. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves and it would be great to see you all again. We host the Clubs NZ competition this weekend - Sat 1st and Sun 2nd. We really need as much support for our club as possible - please get a team entered. Note - we are the current Champion Club! This comp is not just marlin and tuna, but kingfish, snapper, trevally and kahawai as well. The past week we have had very good catches of snapper, bluenose, kingis, broadbill (361kg - a pending world record) marlin and a 105kg southern bluefin tuna. 3 Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club Page 3 We have entries from the South Island and from far and wide, so we need all the help we can get to defend the Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club s honour and hold on to the Clubs NZ Trophy. Kamo are sending a huge armada to try and out-fish us, but we have local knowledge!! - we need our anglers to turn up, catch lots and lots of fish and have a lot of fun. We have Marlin, Kingfish and Kahawai specialists amongst us and hopefully we can wrangle a few Tuna, Snapper and Trevally from the deep. Last year there were no Marlin weighed and only one trevally and all those prizes were drawn. The heaviest other species was won by a Porae, so, remembering that we don t accept sharks, bring in all your other species - Eels, Granddaddy Hapukas etc as they may be eligible for a prize.

4 Entry Fee: Adult $50 Junior: $20 Briefing Friday 2nd December 7pm Page 4 Ladies Tournament 49 boats and 112 anglers this year, with the dress-up theme of the Great Gatsby; the 1920 s. The weather was much better than it has been for the girls in previous years, but still rolly enough on the first day to produce a lot of queasy stomachs! Day one brought on some marlin with 5 stripeys weighed in; the heaviest for Chloe Mackay on dad s boat Macksom. Chloe took 2 hours and 20 minutes to land her fish of 126.7kg on 24kg line from the back of Stevies, with a livey. We also had one fish tagged and released for Larissa Bergman on Rampage, estimated to be 80kg. There were 4 tag & release shark and 2 good yellowfin. Unfortunately, the heaviest fish of 45.9kg caught by Roz Adams on Scrap Value was disqualified by the team as the rod was touched during play good sportsmanship from that team! and well done on the fish still. The other yellowfin was caught by Louie Burt on Tonka, which weighed 25.2kg. Also, caught that day, but late at the weighstation so for tomorrow s tally, was Jemma Parrish on Brace ya Self, who brought in 2 marlin, stripys of 144.6kg and 100kg! Brace ya Self, skippered by Logan Parrish had an awesome day, with crew member Carol Parrish also tagging and releasing a stripy estimated to be 80kg, all these fish on 24kg line. Amber Parrish aboard Rampage also landed a stripy of 97.8kg, it surely was the day for the Parrish family. Day 2 and we had 3 stripys weighed in and 5 tagged and released, with the biggest stripy of 94.6kg for Amy Spicer on Shandi. Blue bob also put their heads up and Susan Potier aboard Back n Black landed a fish of 130.6kg, but the fish of the day was caught by Sandra Jones from Muriwai (a Westy), who weighed in a blue of 203.2kg, fishing from Miss Chris. Jemma and Sandra divided most of the trophies between themselves, especially Jemma who had bought the boat she was on in the Calcutta (Brace ya Self) and ended up with all the Calcutta money! Bob Youngman whose son Geoff fishes on Amicus,

5 Page 5 generously gave us another piece of equipment from Youngman Richardson & Co. for a lucky draw, with Linda Bradly being the lucky winner. Then came time for the biggie a trip for two to Rarotonga! Twelve names were drawn and given 12 numbered bottles of plonk, then numbers were drawn and the anglers whittled down to the last two standing. An ecstatic Rhonda Teixeira won the prize and deservedly so, she has never been to Rarotonga and actually has family there, so well done Rhonda enjoy! Fishing was done so now it was party time we had Charleston dancing and lots of flapper girls and their mobster boyfriends, the Montauk team had the best fancy dress. Next morning Viv came in to clean up and the place was covered wall to wall with feathers from all the headpieces and boas, as we danced the night away with DJ Venom. A big thankyou to the major organisers of the comp. Lisa Clemmett and Judy Worden, and everyone who helped make the contest a success. 7 Page 7 Classic Boats Easter Weekend for all boats born before 1988 If you think your boat is old enough you are welcome to join in the Classic Boats Tournament. The weather has been a bit dismal over the past few years, but we will have a talk to the weather gods and see if we can t ensure a lovely calm weekend for the older girls of our fleet. You will be fishing for: Marlin/Swordfish T&R Marlin Tuna (includes Albacore and Skipjack) T&R Shark Kingfish Snapper Briefing night; Friday 14th, 7pm
