Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club Newsletter April 2017 Presidents Fishing Report Well it's been a mixed bag of all sorts since the last newsletter, both fishing and weather. Whangaroa as the marlin capital of NZ has certainly lived up to its name with some amazing catches recently. Unfortunately Classic Boats was cancelled due to the weather at the time and more bad stuff was on the way. The sponsors prizes from Cater Marine have been transferred to the NZ 6kg Light Tackle Tournament at Queens Birthday Weekend. For Power Farming's Stockies, Cockies and Growers we were promised super nice weather, but somebody didn't talk to the right authority and a load of easterly turned up. 23 boats and 65 anglers ventured out to try for the marlin but most changed their sights to kingis and snapper. These stockies certainly know how to have a great time. Some recent notable catches; Jamie Sanderson on Shandi caught a Bass of 95.8 kg, Phil Marra on Saragara Broadbill kg, Warick Dowse on Zivio Striped Marlin kg. Late this week there have been several marlin encounters - sea temperature is still degrees with nice blue water. There are lots of skippys from 50m out to 200m behind Stevies up to Bergans. The crew of Catch Me, Luke and Marc landed a double 91kg and 98 kg on Wednesday at 190m - at the same time Miss Chris - Darryl and Linda, had another double to contend with in 160m but the fish won this time. Rustler also had a fish to the boat -- Macksom also landed a nice stripey of 141.6kg that the caught 150m off the Nine Pin on the way back to Auckland on Friday. Sean MacKay was the angler. Christina has also been busy with good catches of nice snapper & kingfish in m both off Taupo Bay and Flat Island. Cheers Terry Our normal fantastic Meat Raffles & Last Friday s Handle Draw Jackpot of $240 was won by Chris Wilkins Friday Night Happy Hour (6pm to 7pm) Get your light tackle ready for the Queen s Birthday Weekend 3rd, 4th and 5th June Sponsored by Cater Marine And of course we have all the Lions games showing on our Big Screen See page 2 for games and times

Clubs NZ Fishing Contest at Whangaroa Page 6 The weather was very reasonable this year for the boaties; the sea was relatively calm and the mornings were still and foggy, with an afternoon breeze and a few drizzly showers between the sun. We had 8 clubs take part this year; South Otago Town & Country Club, Paihia Ex-Servicemen s Association, Kaikohe RSA, South Taranaki Club, Ngunguru Sports & Recreation Society, Papakura Club, Kamo Club and the hosts Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club. There were lots of prize sections with braid and mono sections for the smaller species, ranging up to tuna, kingfish, shark and billfish categories. Prizes came from Kilwell Sports, Lion Red, Saltwater Connection and Burnsco. The first day of fishing turned out busy with 33 kahawai caught, mainly by the Kamo Club anglers, with the heaviest weighing 2.72kg caught by Richard Thomas from the boat Sika Workmate. There were also 17 snapper caught with Richard again having the heaviest fish of 10.16kg, Richard must have found a good spot alright! There was a prize for the first shark tagged and released, and John Drummond fishing for the Kaikohe RSA put a tag in a mako shark estimated to be 50kg. A few anglers targeted kingfish and we had 4 fish weighed in and 2 tagged and released, with the heaviest of the day going to Dianne Sullivan on the boat Extreme Team from Kamo Club, at 7.34kg. Biggest fish of the day was a striped marlin which was landed by Jed Rowe aboard SpongeBob, fishing for South Taranaki Club, a fish of 93.9kg. The second day of fishing was slightly quieter but still with lots of kahawai and snapper weighed in. Biggest kahawai of the day went to Kathryn Needham fishing for the Kamo Club, and the heaviest snapper of 7.82kg was caught by Graham Forbes aboard Sweet Dreams, also fishing for the Kamo Club. The kingfish were on the menu with 20 caught, mostly tagged and released by the crew from the Papakura Club aboard Major Tom II, who tallied up 10 tag & releases and weighed in 3 fish but the heaviest kingfish for the day went to the home team with Sam Spence aboard Taniwha bringing in a fish of 12.64kg. We also had a retrieved tag from a kingfish. Richard Thomas brought back a tagged kingfish of 5.44kg which he caught at Stephenson s Island. It had previously been tagged by Whangaroa life member Winky Bannister, from the boat Kahlua 10 months earlier, at the Cavalli Islands, estimated at 5kg.
Clubs NZ Fishing Contest at Whangaroa - continued Page 7 On prize night, we had lots of prizes won and some to lucky draw. The winners were: Trevally: 1st on Mono 2.04kg by Phil Holt on Rehab, for Ngunguru Sports & recreation Society Kahawai: Mono, 1st 2.72kg by Richard Thomas on Sika Workmate for Kamo Club, 2nd 2.5kg by Gremz Day on Seatool for Kaikohe RSA, 3rd 2.46kg by Dianne Sullivan on Extreme Team for Kamo Club. Kahawai: Braid, 1st 2.56kg by Kathryn Needham on KGB for Kamo Club, 2nd 2.44kg also by Kathryn Needham, 3rd 2.4kg Chris Needham on KGB for Kamo Club. Snapper: Mono, 1st 10.16kg for Richard Thomas on Sika Workmate for Kamo Club, 2nd 9.92kg by Simon Wech on Absolute for Kamo Club, 3rd 9.78kg by Gavin Ball on Absolute. Snapper: Braid, 1st 8.5kg by Kelly Wech on Absolute, 2nd 8.48kg by Gavin Ball on Absolute, 3rd 4.56kg by Ken Maclean on Knot Shore for Kamo Club. Kingfish: 1st 12.64kg by Sam Spence on Taniwha for Whangaroa SFC, 2nd 8.76kg by Brian Hardwick on Major Tom II for Papakura Club, 3rd 7.34kg by Dianne Sullivan on Extreme Team for Kamo Club. Marlin: 1st 95.2kg by Stacey Macken on Splash for Kamo Club, 2nd 93.9kg for Jed Rowe on SpongeBob for South Taranaki Club. For the club trophies, we allocated points to the place winners and it worked out that Papakura Club and South Taranaki Clubs had 80 points, Whangaroa and Ngunguru Clubs had 100 points and Kamo Club accumulated a massive 990 points, winning them the National and Northern Region Clubs NZ trophies well done Kamo Club!
Page 8 You dont see a Bass this big very Often kg Club member Jamie Sanderson caught it on the boat Shandi. It is not a legal catch for the Club as Jamie caught it using an electric reel, but he brought it in to weigh and we are so glad he did! Another fantastic catch to add to your records Jamie.
Review of the New Zealand Marine Research Foundation project on The Economic Contribution of Recreational Fishing in New Zealand Page 9 Response to questions from NZSFC Zone 3, 4 and 8 meeting April 2017 Where are we at with the peer review and publishing of the Southwick research? A 12-page public report was published in March It was presented at the New Zealand Fisheries Symposium in April A draft technical report was made available at that time. Both reports were presented to the Marine Amateur Fisheries Working Group so that they could recommend the results be taken into account by the Minister when making management decisions. Representatives of commercial fishing interests attempted to undermine the survey method and results. MPI Policy decided to fund an independent peer review by survey and economic experts from NRB and Prof Ralph Townsend. In addition, MPI wanted to grade the Technical Report against their Research and Science Information Standard for New Zealand Fisheries (RSIS). As a result of reviewers comments and discussions at the Working Group, a new section on The Context and Limitations of the Survey and Results was added to the 170-page Technical Report. The main issues raised by reviewers were: the self-selected nature of the online survey; the technical detail of methods were not all completely and precisely described in the report; the data available to estimate expenditure on fishing by international visitors was limited; and that the survey data was not supplied to MPI or reviewers. These had a bearing during the grading of the report. Rob Southwick will be presenting a paper on the current survey results at the 8 Th World Recreational Fishing Conference in July This will be published as a peer reviewed scientific paper in the conference proceedings. How did it fare with MPI information grading? At the final review meeting on 12 December 2016 the Technical Report was graded as Two Medium or Mixed Quality for information that has been subjected to some level of peer review against the requirements of the Standard and has been found to have some shortcomings with regard to the key principles for science information quality. However, the report is still useful for informing management decisions. Important notes: 1. The Research and Science Information Standard for New Zealand Fisheries is intended for reviewing stock monitoring and stock assessment reports. 2. None of the MPI or fishing industry economic reports have been reviewed or graded against this Standard. Will we be following through with a research project to achieve comparison of recreational and commercial values of these inshore fisheries? At this stage the New Zealand Marine Research Foundation does not have the funding for another economic research project. This initial research measured the economic activity associated with recreational fishing, not what an extra tonne of fish was worth to recreational fishers, nor the consumer surplus, which is the value over and above what is spent to catch a fish. The species-based estimates in the report are the best that could be achieved with the available data, noting that these assume that all the expenditure for each trip is for the stated target species. To get an unbiased estimate of what a fish is worth to the average recreational fisher compared to its commercial value is a different and difficult question requiring data different survey approach. MPI has been encouraged to fund such a project, to date they insist all available funds are being used for the National Panel Survey (NPS) of recreational harvest. NZSFC has asked that the 7000 people recruited for the NPS be asked if they would participate in a follow on survey, which could be the next economic survey.
