1 Waihau Bay PDC OPOTIKI 3199 November Newsletter 2013 The club s New Fence First I would like to thank Steve Foster for his very generous donation towards the cost of the materials for the new fence. This is so much appreciated! The working bee is happening on the weekend of the 16 th and 17 th of November. If you could please or phone if you are coming that would be helpful for catering purposes. Labour Weekend Competition Well, we had the usual windy Labour Weekend but the temperatures were kind and lots of good people still came to Waihau Bay and entered the competition. We had a total of 89 entries made up of 52 in the open section, 17 land based people and 20 juniors. The prize giving saw a great crowd at the club and loads of kids coming up to get their little prize just for going fishing. The sponsors were Farmlands Opotiki, NZ Fishing News, Wakelin Motors Parts and Service, Connectec Electrical and Communication, Khaos Kitchen (at the Lodge) and Asmuss Brooking. Jetty Fishing. Maia Stowell.996 Red Moki. Maia Garland.156 sprat. Leonard Rankin.110 sprat Junior Heaviest Snapper. Robert Farr.992 Land Based. Graham Coates, snapper, 4.1 kgs. Huia Farr, snapper, 2.1 kgs, Ian Philpott, Porae, 1.3kgs. Kahawai Lynda Randrup, 3.1 kgs. Andrew Randrup, 2.58kgs, Deb Anderson, 2.52 kgs Tarakihi Mike Randrup 1.02 kgs, Ken Griffin.946. Deb Fabish,.898 kgs Snapper Scott Bradley 5.1kgs, Mark O Brien 2.4kgs, Jim Kemp 1.9 kgs Kingfish Al Hartridge 22.5kgs, Chris Berridge 19.6kgs, Cody Collins 10.2kgs A DAY TRIP TO RANFURLY BANKS ON STRICTLY FISHING By Scott Bradley I had the good fortune to claim this as a prize for the heaviest snapper caught at the WBSFC 2013 Easter tournament. Due to a combination of circumstances, the prize wasn t redeemed until 2 October, but on this day, the weather gods were kind enough to allow skipper Aaron, his deckhand Mike and 5 charterers (including me) to spend a day out at the famous Ranfurly Banks. After an early breakfast at Waihau Bay lodge, we headed down to Hicks Bay and were underway at 7.30 am. One hour later, we were at our first fishing spot, where we all dropped jigs in anticipation of some kingfish hits. Mike managed to hook-up, and shortly afterwards land a small hapuka a sample of things to come? For most of the rest of the day, we fished a range of reef structures, some relatively shallow, others quite deep (i.e. 200 metres plus), and over the course of the day, all anglers managed to hook up on kingfish. Some were lost, but most were landed and released to fight another day. While some were rats, most were really well conditioned fish in the kg range. Amongst the kingfish were some ruby fish, which also got attracted to all that shiny metal being dropped on them.
2 Several years ago I d bought a new jigging rod, and reel loaded up with 80lb braid in anticipation of such a trip, and it got well and truly tested when I hooked up on a solid king of around kgs, and just managed to get it to the boat before the circling sharks got a bite out of it. At around 2 pm, Aaron reckoned it was time to focus on some hapuka drops, so we went to various spots, and managed to land a few, as well as a few trumpeter, amongst tope and the odd barracuda. None of these hapuka were XOS sized the largest would have been kgs, but ideal for a feed. As the clock marched on towards 5 pm, we were still trying to catch some hapuka in both shallow and deep water spots, but instead succeeded in mainly hooking up on tope sharks - small and large models, and present at all depths fished. By 6 pm, we knew it would be time to call it quits for the day, and as wind versus tide effects started to make their presence felt, it was time to head back to Hicks Bay before the sun went down on us. Back at the beach, it was apparent that we wouldn t be getting back to Waihau Bay lodge before 8.30 pm, so Aaron contacted the lodge, and ensured that the kitchen stayed open to feed seven hungry crew members later that evening. All of us were tired after that full day out at the Banks, but we could also reflect on what had been a great day out on one of those great patches of fishing territory where one can expect the unexpected. Although I m a shore based angler at heart, I know I ll be back there again in the future! Dear NZSFC affiliated clubs, members and LegaSea supporters Thank you all for your input and feedback before, during and after the LegaSea snapper campaign. A LegaSea opinion piece was published in the NZ Herald on 24 September. It sums up the snapper situation well. It is worth a read as it rebuts the claims that recreational fishers need to hold quota and buy more quota off commercials as the population increases. Catch reporting would be required under this scheme. Who are the rednecks? Here is the original article by Gareth Morgan and Glenn Simmons, espousing their economic and academic solution to snapper public quota holders, reporting and an independent fishing trust. Hobby fishers must pay for snapper A comprehensive list of the process is now on the NZ Sport Fishing Council website at Please help yourself to the documents and share these links with your clubs, family and colleagues. The more informed we all are, the more likely we are to act. Regards, Trish Rea, LegaSea Liaison P: M: F: 0800 LEGASEA ( ) E: trish@legasea.co.nz W:

Leis will be supplied and Pina Colodas on sale!! It s here the future of commercial fishing New trawling technology billed as the future of sustainable fishing has been unveiled to the NZ seafood industry at its annual conference in Auckland. The system, which has been in development in this country for almost 10 years, uses a large, flexible PVC tube instead of a traditional mesh net. NZ fishing companies Aotearoa Fisheries, Sanford and Sealord are investing $26 million into the commercialisation phase of the technology, called Precision Seafood Harvesting. The government is matching industry investment and scientists from Plant and Food Research Institute, are working with the three fishing firms to trial the system on commercial vessels. Sanford managing director Eric Barratt said precision harvesting was the biggest step forward the fishing industry had taken in 150 years and could be put to use in NZ s commercial snapper fishery within two years. The PVC tube is towed behind a fishing vessel like a regular trawling net and contains small portals through which juvenile fish can escape. It is hauled on to a vessel full of water with the aim of keeping the fish inside alive. Once on deck, the water is released and the crew can sort through the catch as it spills out one end of the tube. Any by-catch, such as sharks or stingrays as well as juvenile fish that didn t manage to escape through the portals can then be released back into the ocean alive, the developers of the technology claim. As well as enhancing the quality of the catch, the system may also allow fishing firms to supply customers with live fish. Traditional trawling nets kill most of the catch by the time it s hauled on to a vessel. And trawlers that net more than their entitlement of legal-size fish must also pay penalty rates to the Government, which, which results in the illegal practice of dumping dead fish overboard. Trials had already indicated tthat the system could help address issues in the northern North Island snapper fishery, known as Snapper1. A 25cm size limit on snapper remains in place for commercial fishers. Precision harvesting is not necessarily a more expensive fishing method than traditional trawling, although smaller volumes of fish were likely to be caught in each haul and there is the added weight challenge of hauling fish and water on to a vessel.
