5 Making Headlines Tia's Topside opens Oct. 1 in Kennebunk After 30-year search, Boston restaurateur finds Lower Village the ideal spot for second location KENNEBUNK When Lori Lilly saw the future Tia's Topside, she fell in love. Tia's Topside Restaurant offers outside dining, a firepit, extraordinary decor and a beautiful view in Kennebunk. The brand new eatery is set to open Saturday. "It's just so beautiful," said Lilly, who for 30 years has owned the seasonal restaurant Tia's in Boston, Mass. The Tia's team is now expanding into Kennebunk with Tia's Topside at 12 Western Ave. Along with chef and co-owner Alex Fuentes, Lilly had been looking for the right location to build a second restaurant for years. She found it when longtime friend and developer Tim Harrington encouraged her to explore Kennebunk. "I took one look at this location and fell in love with it," said Lilly, who first viewed the new location last fall. "The views over the water and the town are just spectacular, and we're right in the middle of everything. How could I possibly walk away from this, and all of the excitement that's going on in the Kennebunks? It's a gift." Lilly and her team have always prided themselves on fostering a sense of community involvement. "We want to be involved in the community," she said. "There's not a conversation I have with Tim (Harrington) where we don't discuss some aspect of giving back." In Boston, Tia's was the first stop for the Boston Bruins after they won the Stanley Cup, Lilly said. That's the kind of excitement she wants Tia's Topside to bring to Kennebunk. It was the whole team, she said. We sat on our patio with the cup in the middle so the public could share it. We take care of our customers and we want them to feel like it s home. The restaurant will offer a fun environment and cozy feel, Lilly said, with moderately priced seafood and American dishes. The restaurant s porches will offer outdoor seating areas and spectacular views. There will be a fire pit on the front patio, and televisions to highlight sports games and other happenings will be provided in the bar, and on one of the outdoor decks. Customers will have the option of holding porch parties at Tia s Topside as well as securing the restaurant for special events such as bridal and baby showers, corporate functions, birthday parties and anniversaries, even Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday parties, Lilly said. The restaurant s menu will be similar to Tia s in Boston, Lilly said, with fresh seafood as the highlight. The signature dish, in Lilly s opinion, will be the baked stuffed lobster: 1 1/2 pounds of lobster stuffed with crab meat, shrimp and scallops. The Kennebunk restaurant will start out with approximately 25 employees, Lilly said, and will be adjusted as needed. In Boston, Tia s is operated by 200 employees, she said, but it is Lilly s core team that has kept the restaurant thriving for over 30 years.

6 Making Headlines continued Customers will have the option of holding porch parties at Tia's Topside as well as securing the restaurant for special events such as bridal and baby showers, corporate functions, birthday parties and anniversaries, even Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday parties, Lilly said. "We take pride in everything we do at Tia's," Lilly said. "But I'm most proud of my staff. Most are college kids, and I believe we make a huge difference in their work ethic, sense of commitment and ability to interact with our customers. We expect a lot, and I really enjoy watching the great job these kids do serving our customers." Jim Fitzgerald, president of the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport Chamber of Commerce said the organization is thrilled to have Tia's join the "outstanding array of wonderful restaurants in Lower Village." "We are pleased to have attracted such a fine reputation for fine food and beverages from Boston," Fitzgerald said. "By the looks of it, Tia's will soon be a very popular place to relax and have a wonderful time. The views are fantastic as well." Tia s Topside coming to town has sparked some concern from local residents, particularly those on Chase Hill who abut the restaurant. But Lilly said the business is extremely sensitive to those concerns and will be responsive to the needs of the community. She added that Tia s in Boston has never been reprimanded by the city in its 30 years, and she expects the same record here in Kennebunk. The people that live here are very important to me, she said. Certainly I understand that people need their peace and quiet, as well as a fun environment. We will be sensitive to those needs. We are here to learn and to be a good neighbor. Tia s Topside officially opens to the public at noon Oct. 1. Hours are from 11 a.m. to closing Monday through Friday, with brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

7 From our Patrons We were touring this lovely town and looked up and saw a most inviting site. There was an outdoor patio with highboys and lounge chairs just beckoning to us. It was their happy hour and our 1/2 price martinis were fantastic. We ordered the fried green beans (can t be unhealthy, right?) which were delish. We sat and people-watched and had a view of the harbor--just gorgeous that we wish we could have stayed longer. Noticed what was being served to our fellow patrons and everything looked good and ample. Speaking of being served, our waitresses were outstanding. Look forward to a return visit for lunch or dinner. (Trip Advisor) This restaurant is technically in Kennebunk not Kennebunkport but it is not important. We ate here twice while visiting the area. Lunch was fabulous - had the Lobster flatbread, very good. We returned on Sunday and they had brunch menu s - I had Frangelica infused french toast - OMG and my wife had a Lobster Omelet - both were outstanding. Service was great and the location very good. We sat outside with our dog. (Trip Advisor) Tia s Topside opened this past October this past Fall and was such a great addition to Kennebunk! I had gone a few times and LOVED it every time! I can not get over how well they did the decor, it is a modern nautical theme, WELL DONE, so cute. The first time we came we had wine and dinner and it was fantastic the service was attentive and everyone was fresh and smiling. We had friends in town the next time we came, and lucked out it was nice out and we got to sit outside on the deck for lunch. Again wonderful from the minute we walked in to the moment we left. Everyone in the Kennebunk area raves about Tia s Topside!! (Google Reviewer) We decided to try it on a whim and were very pleased. We dined inside as it was chilly. The decor was very nice. The pub type menu was very good and my burger was very good. Best of all was the bread pudding for dessert. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly.
