Raghunaan and Kailash Chandra 1 Zoological Survey of India, Andaman and Nicobar Regional Centre, National Coral Reef Research Institute, Haddo, Port Blair , Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India 2 Zoological Survey of India, M-Block, New Alipore, Kolkata , West Bengal, India Abstract: Great Nicobar Island is one of e largest islands of Andaman and Nicobar, harbors rich biodiversity. Two species of scleractinian corals viz., Acroporabranchi Riegl, 1995 under e family Acroporidae and Pocillopora molokensis Vaughan, 1907 under e family Pocilloporidae were recorded as new distributional record to Indian waters from Great Nicobar Island. The present paper deals wi e taxonomic features and distribution of ese two newly recorded species. Key words: Scleractinian Coral New Record Great Nicobar Island India INTRODUCTION Nicobar Island, e souern-most island, is e largest island among em wi e landmass of 1044 sq. km. The studies on global scleractinian corals was [13, 14]. The continental shelf region of is island initiated during 16 century wi basic conventional provides enormous scope for e scleractinian corals ideas of classification while e gradual revision of for e sustainable development wi diversified classification system is still undergoing to reflects species [14]. The present paper dealt wi e new e new molecular results for e better record of two species of scleractinian corals in Indian understanding e systematics [1, 2]. Scleractinians waters from Great Nicobar Island. are known as e most recent established evolutionary stage of Hexacorallia and form e MATERIALS AND METHODS extremely complex and diverse habitat in marine ecosystem [3-7]. The coral reef ecosystem is defined Surveys were conducted during February 2016 to as biogenic and self-sustained habitat for e explore e scleractinian coral species at Great Nicobar aggregation of species diversity [8]. The coral reef Island by employing Self-Contained Underwater ecosystem provides widespread services to e Breaing Apparatus (SCUBA) diving. In-situ pictures society along wi e strengening and configuring of e coral wi details of morphological features were biodiversity directly or indirectly and harbors e taken using Canon Power Shot G15. Identification of significant niche along wi e associated faunal species was made in conjunction wi Veron and communities [9, 10]. Andaman and Nicobar are e Pichon [15], Veron and Wallace [16], Wallace [17] and scattered mountain chain of 572 oceanic islands located Veron [18]. between Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea in Indian Ocean wi a total leng of around 900 km as RESULTS prehistoric continuation of e Arakan Yoma of Burma in nor and Achin Head of Sumatra in sou before 100 Two species of scleractinian corals were recorded million years ago during Upper Mesozoic Period due to as new to Indian waters from Andaman and Nicobar geographical alteration [11-13]. Nicobar group of Islands on e basis of eir taxonomical studies and islands represents a total of 24 islands while Great earlier distributional status. Identification of two Coral reef study in Nicobar Islands was initiated by species such as Acropora branchi Riegl, 1995 belongs Sewell [19] and Sewell [20]. However, e mid of 19 to e family Acroporidae and Pocillopora molokensis century is considered as e initial era of coral reef Vaughan, 1907 under e family Pocilloporidae will research ough e taxonomical investigation from enhance e scleractinian database of Great Nicobar Nicobar region of India [13, 21, 22]. The ever emerging Island andaman and Nicobar Islands and also India to ecological attributes of coral reef ecosystem took a symbolize e healy and sustainable marine significant role towards e scientific communities of biodiversity. More explorations are required to e world to emphasize studies on e scleractinian document e coral reef ecosystem of Great Nicobar taxonomy to know em in a better way while e Island. taxonomic studies of Indian corals were reinitiated by e pioneering works of Pillai [22-24], Scheer and Pillai ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS [25], Reddiah [26], Pillai and Patel [27] and Pillai and Jasmine [28] and e investigation includes e Auors are grateful to e Director, Zoological Zoological Survey of India during e late 20 century.
