2 Presidents Update Hi, The club weekend at Papa Aroha was well attended and we had a lot of fun. Pity about the fishing. There were very few caught on the mussel barge and very few of the other boats. Shawn and Sarah found a good lot of fish under some birds. Someone has to be lucky. This trend has continued and the fishing around Papa Aroha has been patchy. Don t forget the Christmas Party on the 7th December. See you out there, Colin (Tank) Sangster President The old fisherman was boring his club mates with a story about a large brown he had caught the previous week. Would you believe it took an hour to land on 5 pound line, was taken on a size 14 and pulled the scales down to 15 pounds. Joe had listened patiently but by now he had had enough. Did I ever tell you about the time I was fishing over that old sunken canoe at Waikaremoana? I pulled up an old maori hinaki from 1860 and would you believe this, it was still full of lovely fresh eels. That s absolutely ridiculous protested the old fisherman, surely you can t expect us to believe that! Well, said Joe, you take 10 pound off your trout and I ll put the eels back in the lake. What s on and When?? 3 Your Editors Ramblings! * * * Hi there, On the Monday after the Papa Aroha weekend Shirley and I moved down to Oamaru Bay and stayed there for a further 5 days,. We managed to catch 2 scallops in our dredge which we ate watching the Melbourne Cup. However the snapper were full on, seemed to be catching slabby male s on the incoming tide in the mornings and then fat females on the out going tide. Managed to boat about 10 to 12 30mm+ fish each day and a beauty 4.09kg fish on our last afternoon. We straylined and ledger rigged in the Hautapu Channel using squid, in about 70ft of water where we had good current and this was where we found plenty of fish. Plenty of shaking of the berley pot was needed to get the fish biting!! Hope to get out this coming weekend for our Club Day and to run some more fresh water through my motor. Have a Merry Christmas everyone and a safe & happy New Year. Russell Ph or r.rountree@xtra.co.nz Saltwater Report. Seems that with the weather improving people are getting out fishing more. This weekend I was surfcasting over at Pikowai but unfortunately the fishing was not the best. There was a lot of surfcasters and kontiki longlines in the water but not producing a lot of fish. It seems that the water is still a bit too cold and snapper are not in close yet. We did see a large whale cruising up the coast about 200m off the beach, was certainly something different to see.on a better note member Andrew McHale was fishing near white island with much better luck. They boated 3 Hapuka with the largest weighing 10.08kg, a dozen gem fish and a few of feeds of terakihi. The fishing was so good they said it was tempting to stay and continue to catch more. Reports from the Coromandel area are that the snapper are out deep and on our recent club trip to Papa Aroha the fishing was very patchy and unfortunately not very good on our trip out on the mussel barge. Hopefully as the water warms up this will change. Next year s trip to Papa Aroha has been booked for 15/16/17 th November, so if you are keen mark it on your calendar now. 4 Fly Box Fly of the Month: Griffith s Gnat This easy to tie, well known pattern, represents a group of midges, or a large single midge. We are seeing lots of these little insects all over the rivers now, so this is a very useful fly to have in your box. How to fish: Use this as a high floating dry fly, or let it sink down into the water film a bit if the fish are not rising for it. You can try trimming the under hackle to help it sit lower in the water. At the Vice: Materials Hooks: Black Magic E (size 14-16) Thread: 8/0 black Hackle: Grizzly Body: Peacock Herl Step 1: Secure hook in vice, wrap one layer of thread finishing at the bend. Step 2: Tie in the hackle and wrap forward to the eye Step 3: Tie in 5 or 6 peacock herls starting at the eye and wrap back to the bend. This helps build up the body a little. Step 4: Wrap the herl forward to just behind the eye and secure with 5 wraps just behind the eye. Step 5: Wrap the hackle forward in tight turns, tie of just behind the eye. Step 5: Whip finish and apply head cement. C Panko Crumbed Tarakihi or Snapper Ingredients: 4 x 100g Tarakihi or Snapper fillets 1/4 cup of flour, seasoned with salt & pepper 1 cup Fogdog Premium Panko Breadcrumbs 1 egg 20g butter 1 Tbsp oil Method: Pat the fish fillets dry with a paper towel. Put the seasoned flour onto a plate. Break the egg into a dinner sized plate and beat with 1 tablespoon of water. Place the Fogdog Premium Panko Breadcrumbs onto another plate. Coat one fish fillet in the seasoned flour, and then dip into the beaten egg. Finally coat the fish in the panko crumbs and place on a clean plate. Repeat with remaining fish fillets. Place in the refrigerator for 10 minutes before cooking. Heat the butter and oil in a frying pan over moderate heat. Place the fish in the pan and cook for 5 7 minutes, turning once during cooking, until crumbs are golden and fish is cooked. Serve with good Tartare, crunchy wedges, peas or a green salad. L 4 7

5 Out On the Great Lake The wind and the rain over the past few weeks has caused a slowdown with action on our Great Lake. However, for those who have braved the conditions there have been some nice fish taken. Harling at first light is still proving to be the best option using a Yellow Lady or Parsons Glory. I have a Parsons Glory tied with a little bundle of deer hair around where you normally put your hackle. As the deer hair is full of air and very buoyant it is constantly rising and falling as you slowly move along. A great attractant for hungry fish!! Once the sun is up put in smaller lures or head to deeper water and the regular Spotty Gold, Baby Brown etc. Or else jigging, if you manage to get a day with no wind jigging is proving to be very successful. A Pat Swift Parsons Glory tied on your jig rig can be very beneficial at the moment. With a good forecast for the coming weekend try all 3 methods out on our Great Lake. I also use a larger version of a Parsons Glory tied with deer hair on my 10 colours of lead line or down rigger, River Report The rivers have continued to be very enjoyable fishing this month, with good numbers of fish, and very few anglers. Fishing a drydropper rig has been very productive, and is a nice relief from fishing heavy bombs with big indicators. The Tongariro has been the place to be, with a mix of fresh and spent fish. The Hinemaiaia has also been fun on the dry or dry-dropper, but mostly small and recovering fish. I managed to get 3 days fishing over at the Western bays this month, and the harling was spectacular. Pat Swift s Epoxy Green Orbit seemed to be irresistible. All the fish caught were in great condition, with a mix of sizes. Trolling was also very good during the day, and we found the small 7g black Toby's and pink lightening Toby's to be the best. Now the days are warm and long, the fish are biting so, there is no excuse to be sitting at home!
