FISHING ROUNDTABLE The end of September and early October found the cooler weather improving the fishing. Reports of schools of Crappie in some channels, mostly 8 to 11 inchers.

Labor Day week, a number of very nice LMBass were reported, including one very great catch that we will add to the FISH OF THE MONTH board, See the article and fish article below.

2 FISHING ROUNDTABLE The end of September and early October found the cooler weather improving the fishing. Reports of schools of Crappie in some channels, mostly 8 to 11 inchers. Lots of big Cats reported all over the Lakes. Some up to 15 to 20 pounds. Bread balls seem to be popular. Some bigger gills out from shore. Labor Day week, a number of very nice LMBass were reported, including one very great catch that we will add to the FISH OF THE MONTH board, See the article and fish article below. Many smaller Walleyes reported in the evenings. Most caught on walleye minnows fished close to the bottom. Try a small jughead tipped with a minnow. This may also get you some really big Cats. Walleyes being caught late, around or after sunset, including a 24 inch Walleye caught by Dan Hill. Dan, who does not catch a lot of Eyes, made the painful mistake of lipping this fish. Those canine teeth are nothing to mess with. Dan's beautiful catch was very healthy and released alive, and is the winner in our Oct Fish of the Month contest. That female should lay about 500,000 eggs next year. And, while we have a very high mortality on this spawning, we know that we have numerous generations of natural Walleye to add to our stocking efforts. November fishing this far has picked up. Trout were stocked the first week of Nov and are being caught. Several reports of Goldens being caught. The remainder of our fall stocking was completed the week of Nov 12. Trout are being caught with spinners 2 to 4 feet below a small bobber or with minnows. Remember the limit on keeping Trout is TWO and you must have a valid Illinois fishing license AND a Trout stamp, if you keep the fish. We support "Catch Photo & Release" for future generations. 3 FISH OF THE MONTH: SEPTEMBER FISH OF THE MONTH - JONNY DILLON - EV Our September Fish of the Month is a belated entry with quite a story behind it. The photo below is our fish of the month. The story is not the fish itself, rather, it is about the very unique young man who caught it. Jonny is a special needs individual, who has struggled through multiple brain surgeries, tens of thousands of hours of therapies and rehab, is paralyzed on his right side, and partial paralyzed on his left. Through all of this, he has developed a passion for fishing. Every weekend he can be seen either fishing on the trail or sitting on our dock in Hawk Lake, catching fish and waiving at folks going by on their boats. He caught his 22 inch, 6 pound + largemouth bass off of his dock using an adaptive piece of fishing equipment that enables him to use his one functioning arm to electronically reel in panfish. This was no panfish!! BUT, Jonny was able to set the hook himself and over time, use his electric reel to land the fish. He has never been so excited as his dream is to one day be "the fish of the month guy" in the Shadow Lakes newsletter. It was the biggest reported LMBass caught that month, and it is our pleasure to announce Jonny Dillion as our winner of the FISH OF THE MONTH, congratulations Jonny. We plan to use his catch in our local and magazine ads in FISH OF THE MONTH: Drop your pictures off at the Office for this year's contest! Our big fish winners in 2015 featured: Jan, a 20 inch Walleye through the ice. May a 23 inch, 7 lb+ Bass and an 11 pound 3 ounce Striper, and now a 42 inch Muskie. These are some of our best fish. Fish of the Month winners get their pictures on our bulletin board, in our newsletters and on our website. They also get a Bass-Pro fishing Cap. This contest, along with EVERY event we sponsor, is open to ALL Shadow Lakes residents and their family members, whether they are a Club member or not. The Fishing Club is a Shadow Lakes social community organization.

CATFISH/CARP OKTOBERFEST RESULTS Our 5th Annual event was a lot of fun, food and laughs. With a smaller attendance due to rain all morning until about 3pm.

As usual it was fishing, not catching. We did have 6 to 7 pound Cat caught by Brian Kerchuck. He was crowned CAT KING for 2017.

4 CATFISH/CARP OKTOBERFEST RESULTS Our 5th Annual event was a lot of fun, food and laughs. With a smaller attendance due to rain all morning until about 3pm. Some of our summer folks did not drive out thinking it would be wet. When the rain stopped we had a great evening. With 36 folks out to eat and try a little fishing. As usual it was fishing, not catching. We did have 6 to 7 pound Cat caught by Brian Kerchuck. He was crowned CAT KING for After discussion with a number of members, we may consider moving this event next year to the FV rearing pond. It is stocked with big Cats, has ample parking and a large common area right next to it. We will ask the Club to vote on this change at the next meeting. As autumn gets a grip on the landscape, and a chill fills the night air, many anglers put away their gear for the winter. However these anglers are not only missing out on a change to catch a trophy catfish as fall begins to fades into winter. Get ready for November cat fishing. With some input to help you catch a trophy cat this fall. Lets understand the fish we will be pursuing, the catfish. The catfish fry are hatched at the bottom of the food chain by their size and many never make it from fry to fish. Cats feed on their young. Even wounded fingerlings end up as meals for the larger cats. Even larger fish are sometimes caught displaying evidence of being tasted by larger fish. Despite this from the smallest of fry, these cats can grow to be some of the largest freshwater fish. This is partially by their natural defense of their sharp spines in their fins. One characteristic of catfish is that they are survivors, carnivorous scavengers that survive by nipping at the carcasses of less fortunate fish. This cycle seems to change in most catfish once they reach a size weighing more than a pound, then the fiddlers as they are called begin to scavenge less and become hunters. Catfish from one to three pounds become fantastic hunters feeding on smaller fish that they can catch. The smaller cats under three pounds are the most common caught on prepared baits and dough balls. Using a cotton ball mixed with commercial baits or dough will help keep the offering on the hook. Placing raw liver or cut bait scraps in a bite size panty hose sack also helps this. But for the trophy hunters seeking a big cat, they can increase their chance of catching a large catfish by taking advantage of the changing season of the fall, and November is one of the best months to catch a big cat. Here are some tips for catching these beasts... As the water temperature begins to cool down in the fall, catfish, like many other fish can sense the impending winter approaching. Food sources the fish are accustomed too begin to disappear in some form or another. Catfish must eat enough to maintain their weight or in some cases the superiority of their species and get even bigger. Catfish by nature are the most efficient feeders, they eat almost anything, relying on it's physical characteristics such as taste buds on their underside and stomach, they hover taste and smell before engulfing and swimming off. Where as other fish rely on sight, smell and vibration and sensors in the lateral line along their body such as bass to locate forage. So, go cat-fishing. Get a strong rod and reel, 20 lb test lines and fish at dusk. Try a variety of baits, including dough balls...then hang on!

6 NOVEMBER "FISH OF THE MONTH" THROUGH NOVEMBER 15TH! Sunday November 13th, Jeremy Serchuk rolled out of bed in his PJ's, put on some cold water gear and caught this 21 inch, 3 pound cat. A nice way to start the day. TROUT FISHING TIPS Choose Your Lures Wisely It s really important to pick the right lures. Using the wrong type could make you miss out on opportunities. For optimal performance, we recommend the Panther Martin Spinning Lures. Power Bait ONLY Works on Stocked Trout If you re fishing for trout with powerbait then you better make sure the trout in that body of water were stocked (farm raised) and not native. Native trout will not bite on Berkley s Powerbait, the only reason stocked trout will is because they are fed pellets in the hatchery and will eat anything that resembles or smells like the pellets. The Best Live Bait Hands down night crawlers are an effective live bait for catching trout, along with minnows and crayfish. A neat trick is to take a look at what lives on the shore of where you re fishing for trout and see what might be native to their lunch or dinner menu. Mayflies, when native to the area, can be deadly during the fall season. The Silver Spoon Trout, love to bite on a small silver spoons. The best way to use this to your advantage is to buy a lure that mimics a spoon. Our top choice is the Kastaway Trophy Spoon. Spinners, spoons and small weighted flies fished 2-4 foot below a small bobber with a slow retrieval will do the job. Limit 2 trout with a license & trout stamp. Catch & Release is encouraged.

7 TIPS AND TIDBITS ZEBRA MUSSEL REPORTS: Most Northern Lake boat were free of any major reports of Zebra Mussels. We will be checking Hawk Lake residents to see how their boats were this season. CONSERVATION TRAIL: The first weeks of November saw a reworking of the Conservation trail with new gravel and a roller to flatten it out. Try it! EV BOAT RAMP AREA: A new set of stairs have been installed to access the fishing pier. BOAT RAMP WEED BLANKET: The blanket proved to work well this Summer. No complaints heard about boats having any major issues launching. We will see how it survives this winter. COMPACTOR RULES: Our compactors have new signs indicating what may or may not be deposited in the compactor and surrounding area. New electronic disposal changes mean no more TVs are to be left at the SLKS maintenance site, See the Association website for the Will County drop-off sites, days and times. They are listed in the "In the news " section. EROSION ACTIVITIES: The committee has focused on the TNV common point. SHORELINE WEED CONTROL BLANKETS: These blankets can be bought and used by homeowners to control weeds around their shorelines. MIX IN APPLESAUCE, BEATEN EGGS AND VANILLA *STIR TOGETHER FLOUR & BAKING POWDER. ADD FLOUR TO EG MIXTURE ALONG WITH MILK AND STIR JUST UNTIL COMBINED.
