Please visit the PAC Facebook Page.. Anglers-Club / USCG Vessel Examination Even if you pay careful attention to safety, dangerous mechanical problems can crop up on the best-maintained boat. That s why the U.S Coast Guard recommends that all recreational boaters (including personal watercraft users) take advantage of the free Vessel Safety Check (VSC) program every year. VSCs are offered by experienced members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadrons, two of the nation s premier volunteer boating safety organizations. A VSC is your best way of learning about problems that might put you in violation of state or federal laws or, worse, create danger for you or your passengers on the water. Sarah Bremer, United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 53 and PAC member, will be glad to provide you with a courtesy inspection. Call Sarah on , and she will set up an appointment to come to you and provide a free USCG Vessel Safety Check. In Club Tournament PAC s next in-club tournament will be for Striper and will run through December. The entry fee will be $5.00 and the angler with the largest fish will receive 100% cash payout based on entry fees collected. Any legal size Striper will be accepted. Remember, membership dues must be up to date to participate. See Otto Dunn at the next meeting to sign up. 3 FISHING REPORT September 2016 By: Dr. Julie Ball The first tropical event of the season has come and gone, making the last hurrah for the summer season a huge flop. But before the storm, the fishing scene was still on a roll. A few things could change once Tropical Storm Hermine leaves his mark. Cobia were out of control as the season came to a close this week in local waters, with many big fish making the end of the season a memorable one. Boats sported multiple catches, with many of the fish pushing to over 60-pounds. The cobia will continue their early fall patterns as they prepare to leave the area, which still offers opportunities for catch-and-release enthusiasts. Sight casters will likely shift more interest to the schools of big red drum still roaming the lower Bay shoals and along the ocean front. Flounder will take a hit inshore after the storm until the dirty water clears. Flatfish will begin to assemble along channel edges, shoals, and around the CBBT as they prepare to exit the Bay. Drifters can find luck along Cape Henry, the Baltimore Channel, and near buoy 36A. The best flounder action continues to come from the inshore and offshore wrecks, where some nicer fish are available if you can find the right structure. Fresh strip bait and live bait are working well lately. Big trigger fish and some nice seabass are also hitting on many of these same wrecks, with squid getting the nod as the top bait. Anglers are also encountering schools of bailer-sized dolphin while wreck fishing or trolling in these areas, especially between the Chesapeake Light Tower and the Triangle Wrecks. Sheepshead are still going strong as anglers entice big fish from the pilings and all four tubes of the CBBT this week. This action will resume once anglers can reach them after the water settles, but the bite will begin winding down for the season soon. King mackerel action has been good this season, with more smokers boated this week off the ocean front. September and October are historically good months for kings, so this trend could continue to improve. Spanish mackerel are still providing action within the Bay and along the ocean front, along with some false albacore and small bluefish. Backwater anglers are finding good numbers of speckled trout and puppy drum in lower Bay shallows, especially in Lynnhaven and Rudee Inlets, the Poquoson flats, and Hungars creek. One angler reported a good outing, with nine specks in the 3-pound class range while fishing in Hungars creek with live bait this week. Decent sized spot are around, and the action will likely heat up with the blow this weekend, especially off Little Creek, Willoughby, Buckroe, and the lower Bay inlets. Croaker are hitting near all four islands of the CBBT, the skinny waters of the Eastern Shore, and off Cape Henry. The hardhead action out of Oyster improved last week, but the cooling trend may put an end to this bite. Tarpon activity on the Shore is likely done for the year as a result of the storm. The Chesapeake Light Tower can offer a chance at an amberjack, or maybe a jack crevelle this time of year, but there are no reports as of yet. The Southern Towers and some coastal wrecks are also still harboring schools of big AJ s. Deep droppers are still catching limits of nice blueline tilefish, some golden tilefish, blackbellied rosefish, with jumbo seabass mixed in, but most folks are focusing on the escalating billfish bite lately. Offshore, billfish are still at the top of the list as white marlin releases continue to improve this week. Blue marlin, sailfish, spearfish, and even swordfish offer bluewater trollers a little more variety, and a shot at a grand slam. One boat even reported releasing one of each local billfish species for a very rare fantasy slam this week. Bigeye tuna are still around, along with some yellowfin tuna. Some big wahoo and big gaffer dolphin are also a good consolation prize. For more information, go to 3

Hatteras Village Surf Fishing Tournament Results 70 teams competed last week in the 33rd Hatteras Village Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament. The McClammers came in 7th (PAC members Mike Howard, Rob Jordan, Herb Ruark, John Taylor and John Cosgrove Mewborne). The Dolphinetts came in 33rd (PAC members Jim & Linda Sheppard) The results are below. 6 August 25, 2016 To the Board of Directors of The Portsmouth Anglers Club: Sea Tow Hampton Roads will be sponsoring Stuff-a-Boat Toy Drive this year. We will be collecting toys that are new and un-giftwrapped. We are inviting the local Angler Clubs to participate in our Toy Drive again this year. Last year s event we were able to collect over 700 toys due to the tremendous support of the local Angler Clubs. On December 11, 2015 the local Angler Clubs met at our Sea Tow office where we stuffed the Sea Tow Boat, the Marines arrived we had pizza s and a photo shoot and then loaded the Marines truck with toys for them to take back to the Toys For Tots Distribution Center in Virginia Beach. What a great feeling to know that we made a difference for a child on Christmas morning. All of the local fishing clubs were represented in filling the Sea Tow Boat. As we did last year we are asking club members to bring toys to your monthly anglers meeting in the months of October, November and December. Sea Tow Hampton Roads will attend the meetings and collect the toys and store them till it is time to stuff the boat. In December we will Stuff-a -Sea Tow Boat with toys that we collected and have The Marines from Toys for Tots come to the Sea Tow office to receive the toys. We would like to get a group shot of all clubs surrounding the Sea Tow boat stuffed with toys. This date will be determined when the time gets closer. If your club decides to participate we would like to attend your September meeting and speak with the club members for about 5 minutes on the details of the Toy Drive. 8 Portsmouth City Park Boat Ramp Repairs to the Portsmouth City Park boat ramp are underway. The side that was previously used for retrieve only is now used for both launch and retrieve, and only one side of that is open. After repairs are completed on the launch side, they will move over to the retrieve side and begin repairs on that. No information is available as to how long it will take for the repairs to be completed. Portsmouth City Park Fishing Pier The construction of the Portsmouth City Park Fishing Pier is complete. The ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Monday, September 19 at 10 am. 8

9 Boater s Safety Requirements Have you taken the boater s safety course? Do you have your boaters education card? Beginning July 1, 2016, All PWC operators, regardless of age, and All motorboat operators regardless of age must have completed the required safety education prior to operating a vessel.
