By virtue of the third place finish Clemson will now advance to the NCAA National Tournament at Purdue University May Southern California won the regional tournament with a two-under par team score of 862, while Oregon was second at 864. Clemson was third at 867, just five shots behind the Trojans. Washington was fourth at 874 and UCLA was fifth at 876. Clemson was the only Eastern school to finish in the top eight. The Tigers actually had a better score (287 to 288) than Southern California for the final round. This is head coach Larry Penley s 25th season and he has now taken the Tigers to the national tournament 23 of those seasons. This year marked the 14th time in 20 previous regional appearances that he has taken Clemson to a fourth place finish or better. This year s thirdplace finish was the best by a Clemson team at the regional since 2004 when the Tigers won the tournament at Yale University. It was a solid performance by all the players all week, said Penley. The key was that we had all five guys in the game all three rounds. That takes the pressure off. No one player felt he had to carry the team. As a team we really drove the ball well all week. We didn t put it in crazy places. Sam and Phillip were great the entire tournament with 11 place finishes, but really everyone contributed. It was a team effort. Clemson had a team score of one under par 287 on Saturday, its second consecutive under par team round. The Tigers did not get off to a good start as a team and stood six-over par for the front nine. But, Clemson rallied on the back nine to shoot seven-under par as a team, its best nine-hole score of the tournament. Saunders round of 71 included three birdies on par five holes. He played the last eight holes at three-under-par, including a birdie on the difficult 16th hole. The sophomore from Windermere, FL improved by a stroke in each round, going from 73 to 72 to 71 in recording an even par 216 for the event. He finished in a tie for 11th, a great improvement over last year when he finished 103rd at the NCAA East Regional. Martin s 71 included a double bogey on the fourth hole. But, he played three-under-par the rest of the way. He had birdies on 14, 15 and 17 before finishing with a bogey on the final hole. Had he pared that hole he also would have had a 11th place finish. Martin, like Saunders, improved each day, recording scores of for a 217 total that was good enough for a 16th place finish. Phillip Mollica continued his fine play on Saturday and had an even par 72. Like Saunders, he finished at 216 for the tournament for an 11 th place finish. He shot a one-under-par 35 on the back nine and had two birdies and two bogeys on the day. The native of Anderson, SC had a second-round 68 that was the top individual round of the tournament by a Clemson golfer. Sophomore Kyle Stanley also contributed to Clemson s strong back nine and shot a 73. He was three over par through 12 holes, but made birdies on the 14th and 17th holes coming in. He finished at four over par 220 for 25 th place. But, he played the last four holes at four over, including a double bogey on the last hole. Still, he had a score of 224 for the event. Clemson s NCAA Tournament History This is the 27 th straight year Clemson has appeared in the NCAA men s golf tournament, and the 28 th appearance overall. All 28 appearances have come since That first Clemson NCAA Tournament team in 1980 included current head coach Larry Penley, who was a junior on Bobby Robinson s team that finished 12 th in the 32-team field. Penley shot a 306 in the event at Ohio State s Scarlet Course. Future longtime PGA Tour pro Clarence Rose was the top player on that team for the year, but Kevin Walsh was the best Tiger at the NCAA Tournament that year with a 299 score, good enough for 26 th place. This is Clemson s 25 th appearance in the national tournament. Clemson has made the national tournament out of the regional in 18 of the 20 years of regional play. Clemson is one of six schools to be chosen for the regional Robinson also took the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament in 1982 and His 1983 team, his final year as Clemson head coach before he became the Athletic Director, finished fifth in the nation, the best finish for the Clemson program until The leader of the 1982 and 1983 team was future PGA Tour player Dillard Pruitt, who is now a rules official on the PGA Tour. Larry Penley took over as Clemson head coach in He kept the string of NCAA Tournament appearances going with a 19-place finish in 1984 and a 27 th place finish in Penley led Clemson to the NCAA National Tournament for each of his first 21 seasons ( ). Penley s first team to make the cut for all four days of the NCAA Tournament came in 1987 when the Tigers were 11 th with an 1197 score. Kevin Johnson led the Tigers with a ninth place finish and a 291 score. Two years later, Clemson finished third with a 1160 score at Edmond, OK. It was a bittersweet performance because Clemson senior Kevin Johnson would have won the individual championship, but his second round 69 was disqualified. Johnson went to the scoring area after the round, which had concluded late in the day. But he was taken away by a media official for post-round interviews before he had signed his card. Figuring he was asked to leave the area by an NCAA official who knew the rules, Johnson left the card in the scoring area with the intention of returning to sign it. While he was gone doing interviews, the card was picked up by another official in the scoring area, who turned it in. Since Johnson had not signed it, he was ruled disqualified for that round. Clemson appealed overnight, but the next morning just prior to the start of the third round, the appeal was denied. Clemson had to count a 76 instead of Johnson s 69 and the seven-shot difference was the difference between second place and third place in the final standings. Clemson finished in the top 13 in the nation all four years during the careers of Danny Ellis, Bobby Doolittle and Nicky Goetze. Their performance was highlighted by a fourth place finish at Lexington, KY in Thump Delk, a walk-on who had played in just five of the previous 13 tournaments that year, led the Tigers with a third place individual finish and 287 score. In 1994, Clemson had another top 10 finish with a ninth place at McKinney, TX. Mark Swygert finished third with an 11-under-par 277 score. His performance included a third-round 65, the best NCAA Tournament round in school history on a par 72 course. Charles Warren won the 1997 NCAA Tournament at Conway Farms in Lake Forest, IL. Warren won the title in a one-hole playoff against Brad Elder of Texas. Warren never led at any portion of the event until he made his putt on the playoff hole. Jason Gore of Pepperdine had made a double bogey on the 18 th hole to allow Elder and Warren to tie for first after regulation. Richard Coughlan finished sixth with a 284 score, five shots off of Warren s 279. Warren finished second the following year with a school record 16-under par 272 on the New Mexico State University Course in Albuquerque. Joey Maxon finished at 10 under, giving Clemson two top 10 finishers for the third time in six years. Clemson finished second as a team with a 31-under score, just three shots short of UNLV. Clemson continued its streak of top 10 finishes at the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and 2000 behind the play of future PGA Tour players Lucas Glover, Jonathan Byrd and John Engler. Clemson was eighth in 1999 and seventh in That 2000 Clemson lineup also had D.J. Trahan, who finished seventh individually his freshman year. The 2001 team was also second, then the Tigers finished third at Ohio State behind Trahan s eighth-place finish. That Clemson team did not have a senior and it was ready for greatness in Clemson went to the 2003 NCAA Tournament ranked numberone in the nation. Clemson had won five tournaments and had not finished under third all year thanks to Trahan, Matt Hendrix and Jack Ferguson. All three would make one of the All-America teams that year. Clemson won at Oklahoma State s home course with an 1191 score. It was Clemson s first national championship in any sport since Jack Ferguson was the top finisher for Clemson with a 298 score while Trahan had a 299. His par on the last hole clinched the two-shot victory. It gave Clemson three consecutive top three finishes at the NCAA Tournament. Clemson missed the NCAA national tournaments in 2005 and In 2006, Clemson s most recent appearance, the Tigers finished seventh thanks to the most balanced performance in school history. Brian Duncan, David May and Stephen Poole all shot 290 for the tournament to tie for 32 nd. Freshman Vince Hatfield was just two shots behind. Other Notes on Clemson s NCAA National Tournament History Clemson finished in the top 10 seven consecutive years, , tied for the longest streak of top 10 finishes in any sport in Clemson history. Clemson played in the national tournament for 23 straight years between Larry Penley was the coach for 21 of those seasons. Clemson has made the cut for the final round of the tournament in nine of its last 10 appearances, including eight years in a row from Clemson has made the cut for the four rounds in 18 of its previous 25 NCAA National tournaments. Clemson has had eight top five finishes in its history, 12 top 10s, 18 top 15s, 22 top 20s. Stanley was trying to become the first Clemson player to win the national championship since Charles Warren in Stanley shot a final round 69 to finish with a 273 score for his four rounds and 72 holes on the par 70 course, just two shots off the pace of Southern California freshman Jamie Lovemark, who shot a 64 in the final round to finish with a 271 total. Ron Grube of National Champion Stanford, finished third with a 274 score after making a bogey on the final hole. Stanley and Lovemark had competed for the nation s top freshman honor most of the year so it was fitting that the final round of the NCAA Championship was a battle between the two young players. Entering the NCAA national tournament, Lovemark had the nation s number-one individual ranking in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, while Stanley was eighth overall, second among freshmen. For Stanley it was his third straight top three finish in a major tournament. He finished third at the ACC Tournament, third at the NCAA Regional to go with his second place at the NCAA National. He joined Charles Warren 1997 performance as the only players in Clemson history to finish in the top three in all three of those postseason events in the 2

3 Clemson Golf same year. He is the first Clemson freshman to accomplish the feat Stanley made a strong start on Saturday s final round when he shot a 31 on the front nine, his best nine-hole score on any nine all week. He made birdies on the par three third hole, the fifth, sixth and seventh holes, to get to four under par for the round and 10 under par for the tournament. When he made the turn, he had a three shot lead over Lovemark. The front nine was Stanley s stronger nine all week. He was 10 under par for the week on the front nine and three over par on the back nine in recording his seven under par score overall. That included an 11-under par aggregate for holes four through nine for the week. Stanley continued his strong play with pars on holes 10 and 11. He then made bogeys on the 12 and 14 holes about the time Lovemark made three consecutive birdies ahead on holes Suddenly Lovemark went from three strokes down to one shot ahead. Stanley still could have tied Lovemark with a birdie on either the 17th or 18th holes. The Southern Cal freshman had finished nearly 45 minutes ahead of Stanley, so the Clemson freshmen knew what he had to do to tie Lovemark, who had competed against Stanley in junior tournaments prior to this year. But, Stanley made a par on the 17th hole and made a bogey on the 18th to finish two shots behind Lovemark Stanley s performance for the 72 holes was remarkable. He had 19 birdies and 12 bogeys and never had a score worse than bogey for the week. His 273 score is the second best in Clemson history for an NCAA Tournament. It is topped only by Charles Warren s 272 at the 1998 NCAA Tournament in Albuquerque when he finished second. Stanley had scores of for his 273 total. His seven under par is the best ever for a Clemson freshman versus par and the best overall total in an NCAA Tournament. The seven under par is the fourth best in school history regardless of class. He finished the tournament with three rounds in the 60s, joining Warren as the only players in Clemson history with three rounds in the 60s in the same NCAA Tournament. He is the first freshman to record three rounds in the 60s in any tournament in Clemson history. Clemson vs. the NCAA Tournament Field As usual, Clemson has played a tough national schedule in The Tigers have played in tournaments with 23 of the other 29 teams in the NCAA National Tournament at Purdue. Clemson has a overall record against the other 29 teams in the national field. Clemson has defeated 19 different teams among the 29 in the field and has lost to 11 different teams over the course of the season. Overall, Clemson has posted a record for the season, a 72 percent winning percentage. While Clemson has not won an event this year, the Tigers have finished second four times and third once. That third place finish took place at the NCAA West Regional in Bremerton, WA. Clemson finished second at The Brickyard, the Isleworth Collegiate, The Hootie and the Furman Invitational. No Seniors on NCAA Lineup Clemson enters the 2008 NCAA Tournament with a lineup that does not include a senior. The Tigers lose a pair of seniors who participated in events this year (Zack Siefert and Tanner Ervin), but they are not in the lineup for the National tournament at Purdue. Clemson s lineup for the NCAA National Tournament includes three sophomores and two juniors. The sophomores are Kyle Stanley, Sam Saunders and Ben Martin, while the veteran juniors are Phillip Mollica and David May. This is the seventh time Clemson has taken a team to the NCAA National tournament that did not have a senior in the lineup, the first time since That year Clemson finished third in the nation at the NCAA Championships at Ohio State behind junior All-American D.J. Trahan. The next year Clemson won the national championship. Clemson has finished in the top 25 all six of its previous NCAA National tournament appearances without a senior in the lineup, including four top 12 finishes. Clemson also had a top 10 at Hazeltine Country Club in Minnesota without a senior in the lineup in That team included junior Jonathan Byrd and sophomore Lucas Glover, two current PGA Tour players. Clemson National NCAA Appearances without a Senior Year Site Score Par Finish 1982 Pinehurst, NC of Columbus, OH of Alburquerque, NM of Columbus, OH of Chaska, MN of Columbus, OH of 30 Clemson Has Balanced Team in 2008 This is one of the more balanced teams in Clemson history. From number-one player Kyle Stanley to number-five player David May there is just a 1.20 stroke average difference. Stanley has a average for the year, while May is at Clemson actually has seven players with a stroke average under this season, the most on one team in Clemson history. A look to the record books shows us that this would be regarded as the fourth most balanced top five in Clemson history. The 1992 team had just a 1.00 stroke average difference from its top player to numberfive. The 1993 team had a 1.12 stroke average difference, while the 2006 team had a 1.18 stroke average difference. This year s 1.20 would be fourth. This is just the second team in Clemson history with all five players at a stroke average of or better. The only other team to do it was the 1998 team that finished second in the nation. That team was led by Charles Warren (71.28), Joey Maxon (72.26), Jonathan Byrd (72.33), John Engler (72.62) and Lucas Glover (72.68). Three of those five players are currently on the PGA Tour and all five went on to play on the Nationwide or PGA Tours. Four Tigers Advance Through Local Qualifying Four current Clemson golfers have advanced to sectional qualifying for the 2008 United States Open. Clemson teammates Ben Martin and Phillip Mollica qualified through the local qualifying site at Cross Creek Plantation in Seneca on Monday, while Sam Saunders qualified on May 12 at a local qualifying site in Orlando, FL. Sophomore Kyle Stanley automatically qualified for the sectional stage by virtue of his selection to the 2007 United States Walker Cup team. Martin shot a 69 on Monday at Cross Creek Plantation to finish second behind Michael Sim of Australia. Mollica was involved in a fiveperson playoff for two spots after shooting a 71. Mollica was one of the two players to advance after the seven hole playoff. Teammate David May and former Tiger Stephen Poole were also involved in that playoff, but did not advance. Saunders had a 67 at Metrowest Country Club in Orlando on May 12. He had the second best score at that site. Saunders, Mollica and Stanley will all compete at the US Open Sectional Qualifying Tournament at The Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University on Monday, June 2. 4 Clemson Golf Jordan Byrd Scores Hole in One Clemson assistant coach Jordan Byrd concluded a successful two-day period for his family when he scored a hole-in-one during a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Golf Tournament near Clemson on May 19. Byrd, the brother of PGA Tour player and former Clemson All-American Jonathan Byrd, scored an ace on the 168-yard 11 th hole with an eight-iron at the Cliffs Keowee Falls Course. It so happened that he picked a hole that offered a new Ford Explorer automobile for a hole-in-one. Byrd s ace came one day after his brother finished fourth at the AT+T Classic in Atlanta with a 13-under par 275. That finish gave Jonathan a check for $264,000, moving him to 49 th place on the money list. As far as the hole-in-one race between brothers, Jonathan has five in his career and Jordan s ace on May 19 th was his third. Martin Finishing Strong Ben Martin has picked a great time to play his best golf of the season. The sophomore from Greenwood, SC made All- ACC as a freshman, but did not make the league s elite team this year. He did not finish inside the top 20 in five consecutive tournaments from the fall through the March 30 Furman Invitational. But over the last two tournaments he has been among Clemson s top three golfers in each event. He was the top Tiger at the ACC tournament with an eighth-place finish after a season best 211 score at The Old North State Club. He followed that up with a 217 score at the NCAA West Regional after rounds of , good enough for a 16 th place finish. Martin is the only Clemson golfer to finish in the top 20 at both the ACC Tournament and the NCAA West Regional. He played well in the final round of both events, shooting a twounder par 70 at the ACC Tournament on the last day and a one-under par 71 on the final day of the West Regional. For the year, Martin has a stroke average, better than the he posted last year when he was first-team All- ACC. His top round of the year was a 67 at the Topy Cup in Japan in the first tournament of the year. He continued his fine play on Monday, May 19 when he shot a 69 at Cross Creek Plantation in Seneca, SC. That score Tigers on Tour in 2008 was the second best at the US Open Local qualifying tournament. He will advance to the sectional qualifying after the NCAA Tournament. Clemson Ties to the Hoosier State Clemson has never had a golfer from the state of Indiana and this is the first time Clemson has played a college golf tournament in that state. But, Clemson does have some ties to the Hoosier State. Two former Clemson athletes had successful professional careers in Indianapolis. Both were chosen to their respective league s all-star game and both selections took place while they played in Indianapolis. Dale Davis played for the Indiana Pacers from 1991 to He averaged a double-double for the Pacers in and helped the Pacers to the NBA Finals in 2000, the year he made his only appearance in the NBA All-Star Game. Davis is still the Pacers all-time leader in rebounds and field goal percentage. Chris Gardocki was a punter for the Indianapolis Colts from During that time he average 44.8 yards a punt, the all-time record in the history of the Colts franchise on a career basis. He averaged a career best 45.7 yards a punt in 1996, the year he was named to the Pro Bowl. One of Clemson s most memorable football and men s basketball victories took place in the state of Indiana. In 1979, Clemson s football team defeated Notre Dame in South Bend by a score. It was just the third time Notre Dame lost its Senior Day home football game in 40 years. In November of 1996, Clemson upset third ranked and defending national champion Kentucky in the Hoosier Dome by a score in overtime. That was the opening game of the college basketball season that year. Clemson has not played an athletic event on the Purdue campus since November of 2003 when Clemson played the Boilermakers in the ACC vs. Big Ten Challenge. Purdue won the contest. Penley Looks to Tie Record for Top 20 Seasons Clemson Head Coach Larry Penley has led Clemson to 19 top 20 finishes at the NCAA men s golf championships in his 24 previous years as head coach of the Tigers. Ibrahim, who had 19 between Penley already has the Clemson record for top 25 finishes in a career with 21, a record he reached with Clemson s #18 finish in 2004 at the NCAA National tournament at The Homestead. He moved ahead of Ibrahim with that finish four years ago. Penley is also chasing Ibrahim in terms of top 10 finishes and top five finishes. Penley has 11 top 10 finishes, three less than Ibrahim and has seven top fives, six less than Ibrahim s 13. Penley has the Tigers ranked in the top 15 of both polls entering the national championship, 14th in the Sagarin/Golfweek poll and 15th in the Golf Coaches Association poll. Saunders finished just outside the top 10 with an 11 th place finish with a 216 score. He had consistent rounds of , one of two Tigers to show improvement in each round. On a percentage basis it was the top finish of his career because there were 140 golfers in the field. His previous top 10 finishes were in fields that included less than 90 golfers. Saunders is second on the Clemson team in stroke average this year with a figure for his 10 tournaments and 29 rounds. He has just one round in the 60s, a 68 in his fifth round of the year at The Brickyard, but he has had 18 rounds between 71 and 73, including 11 of his last 14 since then. At the West Regional, Saunders had 36 pars in his 54 holes, tied for ninth in the field of 140 in that category. He had a 3.08 stroke average on the par three holes, tied for 10 th best in the field, and played the par five holes at five under par, tied for seventh best in the field. Saunders has shown significant improvement over his freshman year. Last year he had a stroke average, fifth best on the team. But, this year he has a average, second best on the team. His improvement is most dramatically demonstrated in the comparison of his NCAA regional performances. Last year as a freshman he finished 103 rd individually at the East Regional.
