6 ABOUT VARIETY VILLAGE INVITATIONAL For the first few years of Alexander s life, his mom Mary Jo was on dialysis and a waiting-list for a kidney transplant; a stressful situation for their family. At ten months old, Alexander was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. The doctors said he was missing his lower cerebellum, and that he would never speak or walk. Mom and Dad put him in speech therapy and physiotherapy, and taught him sign language. They tried to connect with other families facing similar challenges. Then they found Variety Village through Alexander s Physiotherapist and it was a game-changer. His physiotherapy sessions moved to Variety Village, where he learned how to swim, and has participated in several camps, including art, swim, and multi-sport camp. Now Alexander gets around just fine with the support of his walker, he speaks clearly and is using higher-level phrases. Variety Village has allowed Alexander to be himself, be safe and feel accepted for who he is and he has been challenged and championed to excel and feel valued. At 9 years old Alexander is adventurous and loves climbing the rock wall. He had a blast last summer at Art Camp, Drama Camp, and has made friendships with other kids and staff. Today, you continue to help kids of all abilities live their dreams. We are grateful, and privileged, to associate with and its committee who organize the annual Ontario Teamsters Invitational, together with its affiliated local unions, employers and friends.
