2 PAT OWEN HEAD COACH 9 Labron Harris Sr. Award Winner Patriot League Coach of the 996 NCAA District Coach of the 6 NCAA Tournament Appearances 6 Patriot League Team Titles 6 Patriot League ndividual Champions One of the most respected coaches in the sport today, eight-time Patriot League Coach of the is in his rd season as the head coach of the golf program. n 9, Owen was named the winner of the Labron Harris Sr. Award presented by E-Z-GO in cooperation with The PGA of America and the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Harris Award is presented to the college or high school coach and PGA Professional whose support of the game through teaching, coaching and involvement in the community has helped ensure the continued growth of the game and who represents the finest qualities the game has to offer. is not only an outstanding PGA Professional, but also a truly great leader, mentor and role model to the Naval Academy s Midshipmen... golfer and non-golfer alike, said Col. Dick Johns, USA (Ret.), Executive Director of the Middle Atlantic Section PGA. Knowing that he is so deserving of this recognition, the entire Middle Atlantic PGA family is extremely proud of Pat! Owen follows in the footsteps of past Labron Harris Award recipients Jay Hardwick (Virginia Tech), Devon Brouse (Purdue), the late Rod Myers (Duke), Herb Page (Kent State) and Jim Brown (Ohio State). n February of, Owen was invited to appear before the Maryland General Assembly where he was presented proclamations from Speaker of the House of Delegates Mike Busch along with Retired Marine Corps Colonel Senator John Astle, lauding him for his efforts in earning the national award and serving as both a teacher and role model to the thousands of Midshipmen who pass through the Academy. During his tenure at the Academy, Owen has garnered Patriot League Coach-of-the honors eight times (99, 95, 9, 98,, 8, 9 and ), including last spring when he guided the Midshipmen to their sixth Patriot League Tournament title since 998. Additionally, he earned NCAA District Coach-of-the- recognition in 996. Owen has led the Midshipmen to six NCAA Regional appearances, including last spring s NCAA Championship berth at the U-M Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich. n the spring of 998, he guided the Mids to a fifth-place finish at the Eastern Championship and their first NCAA Regional appearance. Anchored by one of the most successful golfers in the program s history in All-American Aaron Wright, finished 9th at the East Regional held at Melrose Golf Course in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Just three years after Wright s graduation from the Academy, Owen landed a recruit who would go on to be one of the top young amateur players in the country and lead the Mids to a pair of NCAA Regional appearances., a member of the 5 Walker Cup team, came to the Academy during the - academic year and quickly made a name for himself. But it wasn t until the summer of that he gained national attention, where he battled to the No. seed in the U.S. Amateur. A four-time All-Patriot League selection and the Patriot League MVP, Hurley became the first golfer to receive the Academy s Thompson Trophy Cup, presented to that midshipman who has done the most during the year to promote athletics at the Naval Academy. The recipient of the Byron Nelson Award, he was one of the first two players to be named to the Palmer Cup and became the first player to represent a service academy in the annual Ryder Cup-style competition. n addition, he was voted to serve as captain by his peers. Hurley was named an Academic All-American, in addition to being named the Patriot League Male Scholar-Athlete of the year following his senior campaign. Hurley earned his tour card for the PGA Tour by finishing 5th on the Nationwide Tour money list. Six players have won the Patriot League individual crown since 99, including Erich Schoen who paced the field with his -over par, at the Saucon Valley Golf Club in the Lehigh Valley in 8. Additionally, has had four players earn Patriot League Rookie of the accolades in the last seven years. Junior put together a near flawless performance at the championship which earned him a second-place finish and Patriot League Rookie of the recognition. A year ago, just missed claiming the title placing sixth overall at the conference tournament. Prior to being named head coach at in 99, Owen served as an assistant coach for the Midshipmen for four years. Outside of his golfing duties, Owen has served as a board member of the Annapolis Touchdown Club since and accepted the position of treasurer in 8. The club promotes youth sports in the greater Annapolis area and helps to provide opportunities for young people to compete in athletics. Owen is a 98 graduate of Johns Hopkins, where he served as captain of the golf team his senior year. After turning pro, Owen earned national recognition with the highest score on the PGA of America s Business School exam. n addition to his coaching duties, Owen is the golf pro at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course. Owen and his wife, Karen, are the parents of a son, Patrick, and daughter, Noelle, and reside in Annapolis. MKE BURKE VOLUNTEER ASSSTANT COACH Entering his fifth season as s volunteer assistant coach is Mike Burke. A native of Cape May Court House, N.J., Burke came to Annapolis in the spring of serving as a member of the Academy s Golf Professional Staff. A PGA Class A Professional since, he joined the Mids coaching staff in 8. Burke is a 6 gradute of Clemson University, earning his bachelors degree in Professional Golf Management. Prior to his arrival at the Academy, Burke served interships at the Brentwood (Calif.) Country Club, the Seaview Marriott (N.J.), the Air Force Academy (Colo.) and Brandon Dunes (Ore.). A proven master of the links, Burke passed the PGA Playing Ability Test on his first attempt.

18 Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in men and women s sports. nitially started as an NCAA Division -AA football conference in 986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 99 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MT as associate members. Boston University will join the Patriot League as a full member beginning in the - season. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. n addition, 8 teams from Patriot League full-member institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: n the latest release of NCAA Academic Progress Rate, 9 percent of Patriot League teams scored at or above the national Division four-year average score of 9. 9 Patriot League teams, and 8 overall from full-member institutions, earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for finishing in the top percent of all teams in the most recent four-year APR scores. t John League ing the N regular won the Patriot League Presidents Cup for the first time in school history, and also won the women s title. Lehigh edged the Mids for the men s crown. s Jess Palacio and Colgate s Elise DeRoo were nominees from the Patriot League for the NCAA Woman of the award. 8 student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-District recognition. For the first time in League history, three women s basketball teams earned postseason bids, as went to the NCAA Tournament, American to the WNT and Holy Cross to the WB. Jess Palacio () was a second-team All-America selection by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and competed at both the NCAA Cross Country and ndoor Track and Field Championships. s Laura Gorinski was invited to the NCAA Women s Swimming Championship, where she competed in the M and and breaststroke events.
